  • Russian figure skater Julia Lipnitskaya temporarily halts her free skate at the Rostelecom Cup, in Moscow, on November 5, 2016, due to a cramp.
Lipnitskaya won gold in the team event at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi when she was 15, becoming the youngest Olympic skating champion since 1936. She also won silver at the world championships in April 2014, which was her last major event.
She announced her retirement on Monday, Aug. 28, 2017, after three months' treatment for anorexia.

Rather, if you become anorexic due to the enormous pressure to stay thin and be in control of your body and keep performing like you did at 15, you will suffer repetitive injuries and weakness and your doctors will inform you that if you continue on as such you will die. That's why Yulia quit. I wouldn't call that being timid.

Russian figure skating is a massive global image for themselves. For instance, Yevgeny Plushenko left Volgograd city because sole figure skating school was shutting down there. He went to St.Peterborough on his own at age of 11(!!!) to be coached by Alexey Mishin. All his coaching, competitions and living expenses were covered (by some kind of system) Just 2 years later he appears on private video tape in Sydney, Australia while part of training camp. Try to comprehend what sort of expences these are. These are hundreds of thousands of $. His single mom was a janitor. He started earning decent money only aged 15, when he came second in European Championship.
Russian figure skating athletes are pushed by enormous pressure to perform and to dominate. This machine does not care will individual break or not, main thing is to squeeze all juices out before individual quits. When he/she quits there are dozens waiting in line prepared by system. Did Lipnitskaya's place stayed vacant for long? In blink of an eye you have got Medvedeva, then Zagitova and now Trusova and other teens.
There must be political interests behind this to keep patriotism high within masses with aim to maintain current regime.

Elena C. She had anorexia which led to deficiencies in potassium and other nutrients and that can cause severe muscle cramps, tearing of muscles and other health issues. They are forced to follow strict diets and training routines and it led to her developing anorexia which she kept hidden probably out of fear of getting in trouble. After winning the Olympic gold she was under a lot of pressure to be the best and keep on winning gold medals. She couldn’t handle the pressure and it made her anorexia worse. This was the last time she competed and the last time she skated.

That is awful and amazing at the same time
Amazing because she completely skated through the pain like a professional, and because once she stopped skating and went back she gave it her all. She took all she could and put that strength into it
Awful, because the coach made her skate anyway even though she was hurt. Like someone said in the comments she is a seasoned professional and beautiful skater. She knows what she can and cant do and knows her limits. Also sad because she looks so crushed waiting for the results, practically crying either from disappointment or pain, or even both. :(
I'm sure Russia was proud for such a strong and dedicated skater
I am extremely sad to see her retire, but I do pray for her and hope she gets better 💕💕
