I have this same setup Z50ii and 180-600. I have read that the 180-600 is at its sharpest at f/8. I have confirmed that setting to be true.

Excellent review, I have been considering this camera for awhile to backup my Z9. I currently use the Z6ii for a backup but it is a terrible wildlife camera because of the poor focusing. I think the Z6ii will go up for sale today and I will be ordering the new Z50ii. I had the Z50 for awhile but it was also very poor at focusing on moving subjects so I got rid of it as well. Thanks for a great review and showing what the camera can actually do!!

Thanks! Yeah, good choice. I love my Z9 but it's heavy to travel with, so so I use a Z8/Z50ii combo.

So far, I use the two kit lenses and the Viltrox f/1.7 56mm on the Z50 II. I then bought a secondhand Sirui T-025SK Traveler Ultralight (carbon) tripod for ~80 Euros.
I must say I've fallen in love with the 50-250mm and Viltrox lens so far.
I almost bought the Nikon 180-600mm but decided to hold on and utilize what I have right now, since I use the camera for traveling with my sled dogs, biking, and snowboarding mostly, and the weight/quality ratio so far is just perfect.
I even have some really great bird pictures that I took with the "375mm" lens.
In the future, an ultra-wide-angle and macro lens are definitely on the bucket list after winter has passed.
    Cheers from Switzerland

How do you find the 50-250? I love the 180-600, but it's is a bit heavy for hiking, so a smaller tele would be great with the Z50ii.
      thanks for watching!

@gdsmithimages Honestly, it's a fantastic lens and sharp across the entire range. It also surprised me that it even has some great subject separation and bokeh.
Colors and contrast are excellent, too.
I did buy it new for 250 Euro, and it's an absolute steal.
It's not weather-sealed, and it doesn't come with a lens hood. You still need to crop in a fair bit on smaller birds, but the subjects are sharp.
Get it; you won't regret it.
      Cheers

Bought this camera to give it a try. I am mainly a mft shooter for my birds and wildlife shooting mainly with the Olympus OM-1 M1 and various oly and Panasonic Leica lenses. I rented the 180-600 and 100-400 Nikon for this one to compare against my 300mm f4 and 40-150mm 2.8 with both 1.4 and 2.0 teleconverters. Overall I was very pleased with the camera and lens combos on the Nikon. The 180-600 is very simular to the sony 200-600mm which I have also owned. But the Nikon seemed to be a bit lighter and not as girthy as the Sony. And I liked having the extra physical switches on the lense of the Sony. The 100-400 was probably the best functional 100-400 that I have used. I don’t like pumpers but surprisingly the Nikon was very easy to use with its shorter throw for zooming than either the canon or Sony versions. And it seemed to stay balanced much better as well as it zoomed and extended. For image quality I really didn’t see a huge difference between the two systems. The oly wins hands down for focusing it was just faster at locking on and staying on the bird. This wasn’t a huge deal with static birds and the Nikon is easily as good as the oly. But when those birds started moving the oly was better at least from my experience. There was a few cons of the Nikon 1st being only able to get jpeg output when in pre release mode and the second was the battery life. And to make matters worse even though the Nikon has usb-c charging and power. I found that unless you were using a higher amperage charger the Nikon simply refused to recognize the charger. Image quality wise I think the Nikon hold the sight edge but not enough to convert me back to Nikon just yet. At least not for crop sensor. The smaller size of the oly is the main reason I use it and at least for me The Nikon is very nice but I don’t think it has enough to lure me back just yet. I will be keeping the body with the 12-28mm and 50-250mm to have around I buy and sell a lot of camera gear so always good to have body of all brands around for testing stuff.

Yeah the jpg in pre capture is really annoying. I didn't like the low light shooting of the OM-1, which made it kind of useless for me. The video on the Z50ii is miles ahead of the OM-1, but the OM-1's weather sealing and stabilisation just can't be beat

what Z50II missing is IBIS, it has to work on a tripod. not suitable for walking and shooting.

@@J-Young_photography yeah it’s probably my biggest gripe with it. Shooting long focal lengths handheld is awful. On a tripod though it’s flawless

For telephoto most of the stabilization is done via the lens not IBIS. You can even see this in Frost's review of the 70-180 when he's doing the focus breathing in video mode (on a Z7). IBIS will help in video though to take out that last little bit of movement but you should see how stable my Z70-200 is on my Zfc even with the 2.0x on it. For all the wide angle stuff the VR is built into the DX lenses and works very well on 16-50 for example. So lack of IBIS on my Zfc is really kind of meh, not a concern (I also have a Z6 with IBIS).
