This arc and this story also solidifies Oda's true understanding of a "romance adventure". It's not just about falling in love and being an amazing couple despite all the odds and living happily ever after. Sometimes it's two guys who bonded and developed a deep friendship, who just want to see each other again, and that desire spans centuries. A spiritual bond that can only be reformed by an act of a stranger long after the two have died, who is completely unaware of the importance of that act. It's so incredibly good.
That's always been Oda's strength. He stated multiple times that the only romance for the Straw Hats would be the romance of adventure, because that's what unites them all. They're a big found family, and that's still the greatest trope in the world today.

I'm a little ashamed of how much I look forward to these, but it's seriously so fun to kinda experience One Piece again vicariously through the lens of a first-time watcher. And damn, no spoilers, but it's wild the theories they come up with at the end.
the worst part about the king's betrayal is how the story talking about noland's legend is SURE to tell the reader how 'wise' and 'brave' the king was, and does not bring up why he was so excited to see the city of gold, because then people would be less on the king's side if it was clear how greedy and selfish he was. Noland likely was just naive about his king and didn't think his country's ruler would be a bad guy. because while he's great in many ways, he sadly did not realise that not every leader is great, wise, kind or selfless.
How Oda can completely halt the progression of intense moments for a flash back and make everything more impactful rather than ruin it is a gift Idk if anyone else has like him.
To this day even with many stories being told for years and 1100+ chapters/episodes, this is one of the most tragic and beautiful stories Oda has written, this arc as a whole is just great especially on a rewatch, but man Noland and Kalgara's story is both beautiful and heartbreaking everytime i see it. While shandorian gets to go as far as to the blue sea(the real winner since land got so much sources you can see with how vast their city have become too before it fell and left with small tribe only), skypiean and birkans only reach sky island and live there.

This backstory is one of the most well written backstories in one piece ... , also considering the characters in this backstory are not so related to the mainstream storyline , this is just 👏🏻👏🏻
My only minor gripe with it is I wish the trees/spirits belief was set up a bit earlier so the viewers would have context for the cold shoulder treatment, but as the girls pointed out that would rob us of the perspective of confusion experienced by Noland and his crew. Otherwise 10/10 backstory!
I can't say for certain, but I'm pretty sure the name of no lands home kingdom is on his sail, which would mean the ship belongs to the lord. I think Noland needed his kings permission and telling him of the city of gold would be a surefire way to get permission.
I really love your reactions cause your watching it with so much joy and emotions, you're really into it. It reminds me of me watching for the first time, waiting a week for the next episode and don't really know what will happen next. Some other reactors always having in mind that there are so much more episodes and how many episodes it is till the next arc and that's sometimes really frustrating cause they seem to see it as a task to watch and dont really enjoy watching it or are overly critical because of the hype or their own expectations. The feats of strength that Noland and Kalgara show is beyond that of our crew and that makes us realize that there is a massive Power Scaling and strength One Piece has yet to reveal and humble us that we are nowhere near these legends even after hundreds of episodes
Noland and Kalgara are meant to parallel Roger and Whitebeard. The feats of strength they displayed clearly show they were the strongest of their generation at the time. Even Noland's execution mirrors Roger's in a way. Noland: "The city of gold exists!" Whitebeard & Roger: "The One Piece is real!" just before they die..
Make sure to always have your tissues at hand. You two get emotional frequently, and I'm really eager to see those teary eyes when you reach some future scenes

The Snake God crying the sight of Shandora remains one of the most powerful scenes in the entire series for me for this very flashback. The realization that he's the only one still alive from those times, seeing his home again after hundreds of years... Imagine living through so much conflict and bloodshed, and realizing that what your people fought for still stands. Incredible.
I love how you guys pay attention to small details in the story. That's the best way to watch OP. You will be so excited when realize those details really foreshadow something. So the king was brought along as part of Noland's second voyage because he needed the King's permission and funding for these voyages; hence why the King mentioned getting clearance from Holy Land Mary Geoise (Which is the name of that place you guys saw with the 5 elderly guys who are the World Government's highest authority. This was back during the episode that introduced those other Warlords and who Blackbeard really was.) TL:DR Noland would not have been allowed to set sail if he didn't get the permission and funding from his King. So he was forced to take him along, which is actually pretty historically accurate for how such exploration voyages happened back during our own history's sailing era.
What a great emotional episode. Had me with tears in my eyes. After so far into the ark, I finally know what made Wyper stand up after many deadly strikes.. One Piece never disappoints with backstories.
It has been pointed out before the sheer confidence Oda must have had in this backstory. This story takes place across 8 chapters and more importantly none of the Straw Hats appear even once in the middle 6 chapters. Two months of weekly publication with a month and a half devoted solely to an entirely new cast of characters. That's practically unheard of in shonen writing. The bromance of Noland and Calgara is the stuff of legend!
This moment, "Answer me. What did I just kill?" "A Snake" "NOOOOO!" Honestly one of Oda's best dialogues in the whole series. This part brings me to tears instantly!

The fact that people call this arc filler, and this flashback in particular, is so insane. I love the Noland/Calgara story. The explanation of the fire of Shandora and what it represents makes its importance to the arc that much more important. And I think that Cricket based the facade of his house on the picture of the castle from the storybook about Noland. Also, Mariejois isn't a person, but a place. It's basically the capital of all the nations of the World Government.
I think this has been mentioned before, so it's not really a spoiler, but Mariejois is the capitol city of the world government. So basically what the king said would be like if a US senator said "We've finally got permission from Washington to send an expedition" ...or something.

I've been watching One Piece since I was 11 (now I only read the manga but I originally watched the early One Piece seasons available at the library on DVD! ☺) One Piece has been with me through thick and thin, and it's messages of kindness and friendship and the mystery and amazing characters were always so important to me growing up! I felt like it was obvious how fun and amazing One Piece was, but I remember none of my girl friends wanted to watch it because it was a "boy anime". Growing up it made me feel insecure about liking it and I kept my obsession of One Piece to myself. So many people have started watching it since the live action like you guys and it makes me so happy! I love seeing you guys have such a fun time with One Piece, just like I did when I was a kid! If only we all watched it together as kids, I think y'all and I would have had such a fun time talking about One Piece together ☺ Looking forward to more of your reactions!! Well tbf he humanized an individual sailor and the king/kingdom he sailed for were the ones who had intentions of greed and possibly conquest which is fairly believable.
From what i've read about the wings on reddit "The Shandia were once called the Shandorians. They lived on the moon along with the fellow moon races, the Birkans and Skypieans. The three races had also built a robotic race called the automata. However, when resources on the moon wore out, the three races had to leave the automata behind as they headed for Earth."

Oda's talent to create and present characters within a chapter in two in such depth is unmatched. He does it over and over again. You get introduced to a side character for a chapter and you feel like you know them as a person. Very impressive.
The Skypiea arc and these 2 episodes are extremely important to One Piece as a whole. Take notes of what you can, because in the long run, it will all make sense and will be beautiful.

Marie Jois (or Mary Geoise) is actually a place, not a person. Can't say much else about it, you'll find out eventually. Also, the next saga, Water Seven, is where the series gets flipped upside down and takes a more calculated direction.

We actually know about Marijoa. Back in Drum Island we had the flashback of the meeting of the Kings and the location of this meeting is called “the holy land of marijoa” . Wapol and Dalton went there as did Vivi and her father

Everything about one piece is top notch, even side stories. Our main cast (strawhats) won't appear for 10 15 episodes and you won't feel that something is missing. Oda is out of this world.
The skull island in the left eye is the city of gold, but in the right eye is the existence of One Piece and lost who knows where?, that's the Skypiea Arc is very important in the foreshowding of the Final saga. ONE PIECE is the piece of the eye or the lost island.

So the king was brought along as part of Noland's second voyage because he needed the King's permission and funding for these voyages; hence why the King mentioned getting clearance from Holy Land Mary Geoise (Which is the name of that place you guys saw with the 5 elderly guys who are the World Government's highest authority. This was back during the episode that introduced those other Warlords and who Blackbeard really was.)
TL:DR Noland would not have been allowed to set sail if he didn't get the permission and funding from his King. So he was forced to take him along, which is actually pretty historically accurate for how such exploration voyages happened back during our own history's sailing era.
What a great emotional episode. Had me with tears in my eyes. After so far into the ark, I finally know what made Wyper stand up after many deadly strikes.. One Piece never disappoints with backstories.

It's like a uplifting story where tradition and science meets in coordinance
It has been pointed out before the sheer confidence Oda must have had in this backstory. This story takes place across 8 chapters and more importantly none of the Straw Hats appear even once in the middle 6 chapters. Two months of weekly publication with a month and a half devoted solely to an entirely new cast of characters. That's practically unheard of in shonen writing.
The bromance of Noland and Calgara is the stuff of legend!

Honestly one of Oda's best dialogues in the whole series. This part brings me to tears instantly!

The fact that people call this arc filler, and this flashback in particular, is so insane. I love the Noland/Calgara story. The explanation of the fire of Shandora and what it represents makes its importance to the arc that much more important.
And I think that Cricket based the facade of his house on the picture of the castle from the storybook about Noland.
Also, Mariejois isn't a person, but a place. It's basically the capital of all the nations of the World Government.
I cried again watching this, it's a shame that many people skip this arc even though this is one of my favorite backstories written by Oda very well
I think this has been mentioned before, so it's not really a spoiler, but Mariejois is the capitol city of the world government. So basically what the king said would be like if a US senator said "We've finally got permission from Washington to send an expedition" ...or something.

I've been watching One Piece since I was 11 (now I only read the manga but I originally watched the early One Piece seasons available at the library on DVD! ☺) One Piece has been with me through thick and thin, and it's messages of kindness and friendship and the mystery and amazing characters were always so important to me growing up! I felt like it was obvious how fun and amazing One Piece was, but I remember none of my girl friends wanted to watch it because it was a "boy anime". Growing up it made me feel insecure about liking it and I kept my obsession of One Piece to myself. So many people have started watching it since the live action like you guys and it makes me so happy! I love seeing you guys have such a fun time with One Piece, just like I did when I was a kid! If only we all watched it together as kids, I think y'all and I would have had such a fun time talking about One Piece together ☺ Looking forward to more of your reactions!! Skypeia is one of my favorite arcs, and I'm excited for y'all to get even deeper in the story!!

Well tbf he humanized an individual sailor and the king/kingdom he sailed for were the ones who had intentions of greed and possibly conquest which is fairly believable.

Oda's talent to create and present characters within a chapter in two in such depth is unmatched. He does it over and over again. You get introduced to a side character for a chapter and you feel like you know them as a person. Very impressive.
The Skypiea arc and these 2 episodes are extremely important to One Piece as a whole. Take notes of what you can, because in the long run, it will all make sense and will be beautiful.

Fun fact. The noland story is from an african fairytale. Kulé and the talking skull. Well in that one the skull didnt talk on purpose to get kulé killed. This one disappeared.
Marie Jois (or Mary Geoise) is actually a place, not a person. Can't say much else about it, you'll find out eventually.
Also, the next saga, Water Seven, is where the series gets flipped upside down and takes a more calculated direction.

I recently experienced a different reactor interpret this flashback so badly that I stopped watching them. They even interpreted Noland as being malicious for bringing the King there. It's so clearly depicted that Noland was a man of virtue and was most likely taken advantage of by the King. Hence why he was executed for "lying".
We actually know about Marijoa. Back in Drum Island we had the flashback of the meeting of the Kings and the location of this meeting is called “the holy land of marijoa” . Wapol and Dalton went there as did Vivi and her father

this is one of my absolute favorite stories in One Piece
Everything about one piece is top notch, even side stories. Our main cast (strawhats) won't appear for 10 15 episodes and you won't feel that something is missing. Oda is out of this world.

The skull island in the left eye is the city of gold, but in the right eye is the existence of One Piece and lost who knows where?, that's the Skypiea Arc is very important in the foreshowding of the Final saga. ONE PIECE is the piece of the eye or the lost island.

188 ep of one piece is so underrated i bet if it has to be remake it will destroy us with a lot of emotions, the animation in the recent arc of one piece is insane and skyipea arc is my fav because they overshadowed many things that we see in present one piece.
