2 note chord shapes for the fiddle

- Guitarists learn a finger shape for every chord. In this lesson I show how fiddle players can do the same thing, using two-note finger patterns. The easiest pair of notes to find has the root on the top, and the third below, on the next string down. Using this finger pattern it is very easy to change from major to minor, by lowering the lower note by a semitone. I also show how to find adjacent patterns for the I,IV and V chords.
These techniques are useful for fiddlers in a variety of contexts; accompaniment with off- beat chops; long notes in country music; shuffles in bluegrass or old time, backing in Gypsy music, or rock accompaniment.

Finally, someone that actually tells me useful information about the most effective chords on violin.
Thanks Cory!
you have literally the best videos about fiddle playing on youtube..
Wanna be my publicist? 🤣
Very helpful Chris
Great lesson!
Thanks, been playing fiddle for 6+ years and mandolin before that. I didn’t know the trick to get the minor chords until your video,
I knew this trick before I knew that I knew it!
This video contains some essential skills for playing with a guitar based group vs a classical group. The ability to play easy chords and change between the I IV V is a necessary first step for those who want to move away from relying on written notes. This is a super lesson Chris. Thank you!
Thanks Sheila. Glad you enjoyed this video!
i see why you smile a lot , you just can't help it with your music , im a slightly above beginner on the fiddle and see a improvement every time i pick it up, thanks again for your help
Hi Steve-I love all the music I play! I'm glad to hear you're making rapid progress.
Second video I watched of yours and already subscribed, now I just need a fiddle
Go for it!
@@TheFiddleChannel Thanks, I just did!
Thank you so much. I am just starting learning my chords. You have made it so much easier for me.
Hi Genie. Delighted to hear it!
Very useful video Chris! it has gained you a subscriber! Thankyou. I also chord a bit on a mandolin, so am sort of used to the chord patterns, but just couldn't easily translate them to the fiddle. Again, Thankyou.
You're welcome Jim!
Thanks Chris! You explained it very slowly, this help me a lot! The barrier for me is just the language a little bit... but I don´t give up ;-)
That was so easy. Thank you you have helped e a lot.
Thanks Genie, glad you found it useful!
This make sense am so grateful to you ,..thank for this so very logical explanation ,i understand it! Thank you very much!
Hi Winy. Glad you found this useful!

Wow! This was so so helpful! Thank you so much for making these videos!
You're welcome! Glad you found it useful.
Thanks, I watch and review this. Very helpful.
Glad you found it useful!
Brilliant, thanks Chris.
Thanks Darren!
Good request Darren - and another useful video Chris. Thanks.
Excellent Chris. Thank you. This is a great additional response to my question last year(?) about playing along with others in an informal pub jam session.
Hi Nick. Glad you found it useful. For guitar and mandolin there are endless books of chord shapes, but few fiddle players take accompaniment seriously, so I think there's a real shortage of ides and information in this field!
Very nice this helps alot 👍
Glad to hear it!
Good work!
Thanks Jerry!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!! 👍👍👍
Thanks Jenna, glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks
Very useful and informative, Chris, and you picked the easiest shapes to begin with. I was thinking it might also be good to show a simple scale using those same major 6ths and minor 6ths,
eg a C scale starting on the 2 middle strings, so EC, FD, GE, AF etc, and it's all in 1st position, apart from the last 2 notes. Just an idea. I'm sure it's in one or more of your books!
Hi Jim. Yes, this concept ties in closely with what I call the scale of sixths, which I think is what you are describing. I had a video on that a couple of weeks ago.
@@TheFiddleChannel thank you. I'll check it out!
Hey Chris I was wondering what would be the best thing to start on Chords like in this video or Drones in your other video if you were to start learning your way around the violin?
I would say learn drones first, then 2 note chords.
good, I can pick a chord on the violin with just one finger on the G strings and we pick up C and G with the 3rd finger and on the E and A strings we pick up the C and G notes with the 2nd finger, is that okay?
Sorry, I can't follow you. Maybe try explaining it a different way?
HI Chris, thanks for sharing your ideas. I recognize most of the players on your scrolling page, but please, who are the two Black players? Are the the same person? What are their names, I'd like to follow them. Thanks in advance. Keep going, I'm an avid subscriber
You might be referring to Joshua Coyne and Regina Carter?
@@TheFiddleChannel Merci beaucoup / thanks Chris.
Thank you

Hey Chris! What song are you playing at the beginning?
Hi Noah. It took me a while to recognise it myself! It's Joseph, Joseph , AKA Yossel, Yossel. I think I have a video on that tune.
hi Chris, would what is your email please, I'd like to get a copy of the "dots" thanks.

Just got my grandpas fiddle I play mandolin and this thing is flipping horrible sounding. Well I am. It feels like I can only use one string at time. I sound like a screech owl with torn screech.. I'm stubborn as a fat lady with her last piece of cake. I will be fiddling soon as I figure out everything. Thanks for lesson. I need it .....
Hi Pablo. If it's screeching, it's probably because of the bow, not the fiddle. Bowing looks easy but it's actually a real challenge to get a smooth pressure. Also make sure you have the proper tension on the bow (not too tight, not too loose), and that you have plenty of rosin on the bow.
@@TheFiddleChannel thank you . It sounds so much better now had tension way to tight. Appreciate you taking time to help me out. Thank you very much. Have good day.
@@pablo6305 Glad to help!
