Every video you play reinforces why I am so happy to own a stabilized full displacement 44 DeFever with a walk in engine room and naturally aspirated engines. So much simpler and I can get to things and do much of the maintenance myself! And getting 3nmpg is a bonus.
I'd use Lasdrop. Had Tides lip seals and they would wear grooves on the shafts. PSS has issues with longevity where the rubber tube hardens in time and fails to provide pressure on the carbon seal. Lasdrop seals are more like PSS but use internal springs to put pressure on the seal surfaces.
I like when I am working on a boat and it has tides marine seals for a couple of reasons. No tiny stainless set screws soaked in blue Loctite with Allen heads that can strip, also when you put 1 or 2 spares on the shaft its pretty sweet for long range/remote cruising to be able to fix a leak. Also it is a lot easier to pull transmission or engines while leaving the boat in the water without having to put pressure on the shaft with bracing or straps to hold the water tight seal on the PYI (and being nervous it will come undone). They are both pretty sweet though and I rarely see issues with pyi leaking nor with tides and when they do its not their fault but poor alignment or maintenance or lack of water feed on high speed shafts.
Geez I'll bet you're so glad that the pod boat is finally done. I'm curious about how Volvo handled this. Did they bear the cost of troubleshooting that vent plate problem? You guys must have had a ton of time & expense for that.
Love your channel and your knowledge of marine mechanics is really amazing ! I put PSS dripless seals in my boat ( 1995 Searay 370 Sundancer. No problems with them ( yet ) and really like them. I’m in Dunkirk NY on Lake Erie. Been boating for 45 years. I do all my own 0:13 maintenance… because I have to. lol. No mechanics in my town that I would let change my oil for the most part……. Well , there is one guy that knows a lot and he has become a friend and helps me when I need it. Needless to say he’s very busy and has a full time job also ! One thing I didn’t do which I have a feeling I should. One thing when I removed the old stuffing boxes I disconnected the bonding wires from them and just left them dangling. I wasn’t sure where to put them being in freshwater. I don’t know if I need to, but I have a feeling I probably do where should I connect them ? Thanks Mike

It's crazy how a vent plate can make such a huge difference with the cavitation of water and not good that the charge air cooler had coolant in it and I hate not being able to fix a problem in a short time but a second set of eyes does help alot
So, you put spare dripless coupling seals on the shaft in case of leaks. Then cut to leaking seals off and slide the new ones into place? Sounds like a great preventative maintenance idea
A several questions. How did the pods come from the factory - solid or grates? If someone put the wrong cover on - then they seriously erred. Bad pods work, bad prop work … how much of your work is problem solving and correcting someone else’s shoddy work or lack of knowledge. Finally I guess on occasion “dripless couplings” sometimes ….. drip. (Sorry about that).
So you notice a little pump action and you look at you shaft packing, leaking. No prob. back off the nuts and put in a fresh ring of packing! Or have to haul the boat to trplacr the dripless> Which is the smarter way?
Does binding always work because I’ve heard some problems with the corrosion (electrolysis) problems on boats. Is there any other way to fix the problem.
I prefer the Tides Marine lip seal with the ability to put replacement seals ahead on the shaft to easily replace in the future. The face seal of the PSS I don't trust as much.
Cummins 6 BT-5 mains, what possibly could've gone wrong where both of those highly reliable work horses are being written off as not worth messing with and now the vessel is a static live aboard. Had many of these engines as gens and ME and found that they were darn near bullet proof. %
PSS versus tide marine.....!!!!! Based on my personal ownership with PSS shaft seal I can say the below(the rubber) seems to age pretty fast and loose elasticity making further compression impossible ... the pro model looks better...mines have always create a bit of mist ... and it has never been 100% dry..after each trip it is better to rinse them with fresh water and a bit of soap to avoid corrosion. .. with PSS once you have a problem you need to haul out the boat disassemble the shaft to replace the deficient part.. I never own tide marine but I know if you have a problem you can replace part without hauling out and move the shaft.. it looks, on paper, way easier and cheaper... yr comment will be very much appreciated thank you
All the above is true in theory. You should be dry you should not need to rinse. Check compression on the boot, check alignment and make shafts are true.

I am left with a question. Why, why was the incorrect vented plate installed instead of the correct solid plate? I'm not interested in finding out who to blame, and then blame them. That is not the important point. Those Volvo pods are expensive (for me and most people), hourly shop rates are set to reflect "professional, educated, experienced" individuals performing specialized work that is in demand. How and why did that happen? For me, that is the important and most interesting part of the story that was disappointingly never answered.

I don't own a boat and probably never will, but I’m very mechanically inclined and own a semi truck and do a lot of repairs myself and have run my own businesses forever. I have been using PSS Dripless on my 42' Endeavour sloop for the past 15+ Years and they have worked flawlessly . They have my vote.

Yes the diver did a great job! He was down there to compare the sides for us. Our insurance doesn’t allow us to be on the water.
I just replaced my dripless PYI very good website to determine sizing and installation upgraded with silicone.

I prefer Tides seals with the extra seal loaded. Most owners forget to service (compress) the PSS bellows and they start to leak.

The one we received was configured for a center position for a boat that has 3 pods.

The pod we received was configured for a center position so we had to figure out the issues and reconfigure the pod we installed.
I see. That would be mounted so props were in front and the opening would then be exact going forward
