Thank you for reporting the noise level. I find it odd that so many reviews don't even mention the sound level / noise level from data-storage reviews. It's so important, especially if the drive will be kept in the same room as your computer.
Thank you so much for this video, I'm not sure if you still reply to comments but if you do.. Wondering what alternatives there are? I use Seagate Backup Plus 8TB but its almost full, was thinking of getting this for the 36TB but not sure as I will use it with my PC daily but I can't stand irrtating noise hah. Thinking of either going with Seagate 16TB or multiple WD 12TBs
My solution to spin-up noise and delay for all the external drives I have used is to turn off the sleep timer. More electricity, obviously, but I use my drives all throughout the day every day, so when drives go into sleep mode, it just drives me nuts when you wake them up. I keep drives for years in this mode, so it looks like the technology can handle it.
Very honest review! Keep up the good work!! I almost pulled the plug until I realized the rattling and fan noise. Then again PROBOX 4-Bay enclosure seems to have USB connection occasionally dropping.
You are best just getting the drives from this on the cheap and then putting them in a Synology or Qnap, or even better..... build a custom NAS box in a fractal r6 case (chassis) as they silence the drives to the point where u can't hear a thing. Benefits of this are silence as already mentioned, and the drives remain cool and don't overheat, which they do in the original chassis the drive come with
i know Im randomly asking but does someone know a way to get back into an Instagram account?? I was dumb lost the password. I appreciate any tips you can offer me!
@Axton Fletcher thanks so much for your reply. I found the site on google and I'm trying it out atm. Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
My friend, the sound that hits is because it is on top of the wood, if you had it on something solid like the floor you would not hear any of that. It is simple, hit the wood a little with a finger and you will hear a loud sound, now do the same on the floor and you will not hear it.
I have a 10tb MyBook Western Digital. I think the design of the enclosure is the weakest part of this whole package. I did some testing on one of the things I was concerned about. Heat. There is no fan in this enclosure, which worries me a bit. As I have this enclosure connected to my USB 3.0 connection so that I can stream videos from the router to my Samsung SmartTV. This has been a terrific way for me to stream MKV files directly to my TV, which I could never do from either of my two PCs. Nor could I do it from a BlueRay player. So I have been looking for an enclosure that does two things, Cools and tells me the temperture of the hard drive. I have found enclosure that does meet my expectations, problem is, it's in China. So, I need to weigh the outcome that I need and want.
Awesome video. This is information that will definitely affect my decision about whether to purchase the device or not. The only thing which it didn't answer was whether the individual drives inside are independently covered by warranty. If I were to put 6 TB on one of these in a RAID 1 configuration, and one of the drives were to fail within the warranty period, yes I would be able to get it repaired, but there's no guarantee my data would be returned to me with the device. I would have no way to back up those 6 TB prior to having it serviced. So, that's something to consider as well. If the drives aren't independently warranted, then the warranty is not of much use as I would have to say goodbye to 6 TB of data in order to exercise it.
Checking at WD, the information is somewhat conflicted. Their statement under general warranty information states that only drives purchased as "component drives" carry a limited warranty, but not if they came as part of an assembled unit. Meanwhile, on a page regarding the My Book Duo specifically, it states that the individual drives can be serviced individually by submitting an RMA for them. That doesn't explicitly say that the individual drive submitted that way is covered by the limited warranty for the unit or its own individual warranty. I've submitted the question to WD support, unfortunately they likely won't get back to me in time for me to decide to take advantage of or forego a 15% off sale on a pair of 4 TB WD red NAS drives. *sigh*
Great video, but I just wanna clear something up before I commit. I am thinking of getting a WD My Book Duo. What I want to do is simply drag my photos, onto the Duo’s (set up in Raid 1 configuration) so that it mirrors those photos in the second of the two RAID drives. I do NOT want to create a backup of the photos on my computer. I want to MOVE/DRAG the folders of photos onto the Duo. So basically, I will be using the Duo as a backup drive, only turning it on when i need to move a new folder over.
When you have a burglary and someone will steal this box you will lose everything. Or if someone unintentionally drops it from the desk while you're working...
PS: Does anyone know how the single disc versions WD My Book are compared to the duo noise wise? Cause one alternative is to get two single ones at least if you only want to run them Raid 1 (like me) and mirror it to have a back up of the harddisk...
My 12tb drive just failed got a yellow light instead of the white the wd app reads there is they want me to reconfigure the drive which will erase everything what should I do? I have had this drive for less than a year
It depends on what RAID do you have. With RAID 1 remove drives, check which is broken, connect directly to a computer and try to recover data from it. I'm not sure what to do with raid 0.
Thanks for this video. I should have watched this earlier and only heard good reviews when researching it. I bought it and well.. I wasn't aware and not amused by the sound. . I can definitely not leave it on the desc. I will either return it or place in unter desk and put some soundproofing foam around it without blockig airflow. For noinse sensitive people or people who sometimes are recording vocals and need a quite room it is not a real good solution except if you build some kind of soundproof well ventilated bunker around it... :(
@@yuriyyaremkiv I returned it. I can't remember why exactly. Instead I got a half price Black Friday subscription to Backblaze and added the 'forever' back up option. Now if I lose a file or accidently delet it I just log on and download it.
With other WD options, you are limited in what drives you can put in. If one fails, you must purchase ONLY certain WD Red drives approved for the unit. I believe not even all WD red drives will work. Do you have any info on this issue with this particular unit? Thanks.
Guys, i know i am little bit late to the party, but i just got the 6TB 3.1 type-c model WDBFBE0060JBK-EESN and my red drives are with 64MB cache, 5400. And i am unable to find if this is normal or i should have gotten inside the 256MB cache disks. I am content creator (photography wedding)- a7R3 files - 40MB/file/2500 files per wedding.
nice video - anyone have this issue I have I have 7 Duo drives. all running Raid 1 16tb and 20tb. using iMac 2019 Big Sur overnight seems every night a drive icon will dissapiear - and Mac notification says Eject before removing drive - it varies which drive Ejects - just randomly but usually one or two drives Eject - they are set to NOT go to sleep Anyone have this issue - I have single drives that do not have this issue BTW. my drives are very quiet -
This is a complete failed construction. Raid 1 with 2 Discs - if the case controller failed, impossible to access data on the healthy discs on another Case, because only decrypted data. It's impossible to switch off data-decryption. :-(
Ok, so I got the same one and I did notice the noise a lot, I thought mine was defective, but I guess thats just the way these units are. I just wanted to let you know that you can upgrade the Duo Units, there should be a credit card type plastic in the box and you can slip through the top of the My Book and pop the top plastic out. This only works on the My Book Duo units not the Single.
I have the 20TB too and it's so noisy (it's the fan). Someone has tried to change the stock fan with a Noctua one? I don't know how to open the case Anyway great review!
I wish I had seen these review before I bough this shit haha. The rattling is just terrible but the worst is the shut-down sound. I want to throw it out the balcony at times smh

external HDD are always noisy. for me only backing up stuff i dont care. do you wanna pay much more for quieter system?
The fan spinning was fine but the rattling gave me instant buyer's remorse.

forget about the drive, what speakers are you using?, they look interesting!!!
its the Edifier e25hd
how to setup Raid???
Thanks for your helpfull video which presents honestly pro's & con's about this WD My Book Duo external HDD ! Big Up bro : )
Gracias 🙏 Welcome to the channel 🙂
The rattling noise you describe is actually the drive head seeking. And if you think this is bad, try a 7200rpm Seagate Ironwolf. 😁
🤣 nahhh ... thanks. Don’t wanna get deaf.
Do you have any information about the temperatures off the HDD's?
Hi i'm planning buy this, but can I format the hhd for nota use the emcryption password?? And only storage without it like Seagate
great noise test. thanks, very helpfull video
Great video, the best one about WD book duo👍
speed test?
Hi, just bought one 24 To. Thanks for sharing your experience, it’s very interesting. I’m thinking putting the HDD in my Synology. Have a great day
Would you recommend this drive ??
@@twilomix hi, yes for sure
The rattling noise means that an actuator arm is moving inside
It's hard drives, if you hate their sound (like i do) go with SSD's. This duo bay will be perfect to connect to my router in the garage.

Noise from this unit? I think this is an issue very specific to you mate.
Appreciate the thorough review!!
Thanks for the video!
Awesome video! Was considering this drive.
Can you use this for Xbox one S? Was thinking of upgrading to this? Anyone know would mean a lot!
Very nice review and very helpful as I am looking to buy the 8gb version of this.
I how is it? Did U have tapping every few seconds? I have it in IDLE too.

great video on this drive, thanks mate.
Cheers .. you’re welcome 👍
Thanks for this info, great video.. Cheers
Great work sir.
Great review. This really helped me make my decision.
I have the same noise issue! I thought mine was defective.
yeah I thought same initially : )
Brother, what are those speakers you have!? They look idea for what I need
Glenn Hart it’s the edifier e25HD

Yeah I’ve heard all that. But I’ve not experienced any of that with it so I can’t really say
Great video. I'll definitely pass on this. The noise issue would drive me crazy as it would be next to my bed. Cant work at night with this.
is there anything similar to this but quieter and not slowing down after some time?
Gary Coleman You’re best off purchasing an SSD enclosure and creating a RAID 1, 5 or 6 configuration. It will not be cheap though. Good luck!
Thanks for the vid.. I needed this
You welcome 👍
What disk do you recommend that shouldnt be noisy? I usually like WD Studio
WD blue are less noisy then WD RED and they are working on lower temp, but they are slower and for occasional work, not 24/7
@@DWGibek thanks so much

glad I could help : )
Great review. Does it have On/Off switch?
No.
It does have a switch. I didn't know about that until recently. The button is at the top of the ports - very hard to see, but it's there.
This is very helpful! I need to know if it’s noisy or not.
Damned noisy!
Do you guys know if this'll work on a ps4? And would i also need an ethernet cable to work?
It's just USB, not ethernet socket like WD cloud
I almost bought it! Thanks for your warning!
you're welcome : )
Sounds like the hdd, not the fans.

Que pena que não tem no Brasil.
