- The Our Lady of the Lake University Saints Athletics office is accustomed to reporting results of competitions, hirings, awards and other newsworthy activities. Today was a little different. The Sports Information Department had the pleasure of participating in a special event orchestrated by former men's basketball student-athlete Eddie Ortiz.
Ortiz, a member of the men's inaugural team that began competing in 2009, graduated from OLLU in fall 2013 with a degree in accounting. He met Sarah Lindsay, a member of the women's inaugural volleyball team that began competing in 2007. Lindsay graduated from OLLU in 2011 with a degree in early childhood education. Both are finishing up their graduate programs -- he at OLLU and she at the University of Texas Health Science Center (UTHSC-SA). He works at the UTHSC-SA as an associate accountant, and she is the assistant volleyball coach at OLLU.
At OLLU, the two student-athletes met in August 2009 and began dating on March 25, 2010. On Tuesday, Jan. 7, as a guise, Ortiz told Lindsay he would be filmed for an alumni video. He did this so that she would not be suspicious. In reality, he planned to ask her to marry him. After singing a song he wrote especially for Lindsay, Ortiz got on one knee and asked her to marry him. Following an expression of shock, she said yes.
After Ortiz placed the ring on Lindsay's finger, members of her team, coaches, alumni and other staff members came out with balloons to congratulate the newly engaged couple. A date has not been set for the wedding, but the two plan on marrying in the Sacred Heart Chapel at OLLU. Asked what he loved most about his fiancé, Ortiz said, "I love her patience, her humor and her beauty." Congratulations Sarah and Eddie!
