    there's no need to show the audience what's inside the box because we can get it thru context clues.. the blood, Somerset's recoil upon seeing inside the box, John Doe's monologue... besides, if the box was indeed empty then Somerset could've just easily said so to calm Mills down. But Somerset couldn't refute him because he knew what he saw.
    Also, John Doe had always been thorough with his murders in order to complete his sermon. it's not just John Doe becoming Envy but Mills must also become the epitome of Wrath even after John Doe's death, and to ensure that the wife must die.
