Same here, as a child from a single mother household. It was hard being heard becuase most of the time, my mom barely had the time to talk to me and was too busy trying to provide for both of us. Especially even now that im an adult, and I still dont even know what made her how she is today.

I can resonate with the ESL story LOL I was a Hispanic kid from East LA but born here... I was placed in ESL for whatever reason and I remember the ESL teacher would give us candies every time we got an answer right and she noticed I had a whole bag of candies so she said you don't belong here 😂
Listening to Bart speak about his childhood was incredibly moving and relatable. Just so raw and human. I really gotta thank yall and whoever clipped the short of this episode. I used to watch Just Kidding news like everyday in highschool and this video just brought me back.
My 6 y.o has never been expelled but twice has been told that it may not be the “right space” for him and suspended 4 times all in pre-k. Of course I took him out immediately. He was diagnosed with ADHD but god the LA county school system blows. He’s now doing better in 1st grade in a school where he is loved for being him ❤

Bart, as a random 23 year old women from the uk- I could relate to some of the stuff you said. It made me choke up a bit to also know that how I’ve felt doesn’t make me broken because look how far you’ve come. I used to watch JK as a kid when I was going through those tough times. It’s so healing to me to see you and Geo be wonderful loving parents with great friends around you and a successful business which has produced such good fruit. Teacher rant: I have heard the paper tearing story on another podcast and it makes me irate that Bart was treated like this. The creativity and thought process is amazing! But it has turned him into the person he is. I just hate that the education system treated him like this.

Bart really took all the trauma from when he was a kid and turned it into being the best father for Taika. Such a great role model.
What Bart said about someone being able to relate is legit. As the oldest sibling, I never could express myself to my parents when I had issues with school or my personal life because my dad brought me up in a very authoritative parenting style. I got kicked out of college for burning out after dropping in performance due to burnout, but eventually started making my way back in school and now finishing up. My brother wanted to drop out, but he felt the need to hide it from everyone while he tried to figure himself out. I was the only one who could see it and called him out on it, but instead of chewing him out was able to relate and give some advice on how to go about it. Probably one of the times I've felt closest to my brother, cause I could be someone for him to go to. Sometimes that's all you really need.

Man, I always felt from a young age I never fit in anywhere and definitely had those suicidal thoughts. I had those moments with teachers too where I didn’t necessarily do anything wrong but got reprimanded often. Now, still trying to find my footing in life

I got sent to ESL in second grade. Not because I didn't speak english. But because the teachers were so fucking racist, they said look his mom barely speaks english so he needs to go to esl because he must be like her. They never bothered to ask me lol I was just not sure if i was allowed to speak up because never talk against what the adults are saying.
A lot of us are like this lol. The teachers asks you what language at home you speak? and you say your “native language”. Boom you’re in ESL, even though you speak better English than your mother tongue 😂 idk if it’s racism or ignorance I think it probably changed now.
This is an excellent JK News episode. A lot of people can relate to Bart's childhood and it's good to see how you can take those times and turn it into something positive.

Bart reminds me a lot of some friends of mine, and they're some of the best dudes. Growing up like that and being self aware gives you a perspective that very few people have, and once you finally get your shit together you have such a wild level of understanding and empathy for people. Luckily my dad always defended me when the teacher was wrong, like regarding the paper cutting stuff. I still always had the feeling like i didn't fit in or understand what tf people wanted. Luckily, my troubled childhood and thinking really helps me help my ex husband raise my daughter with understanding

living in the 818/213/626 back in the 80's and 90's.. we know it all too well.. for many of us growing up, we either know a family member; a friend and even themselves being that very kid Bart was. Many stories have been shared and its all too common.. and they're just a fraction of what we've all experienced. can't wait for part 2, 3, 4 +

Halfway through the episode and so far it sounds like those teachers and school were the problem not Bart. This is why our education system is ranked amongst the lowest in the world

my high school rented out part of the building to a naval academy (it wasnt one where you dorm) and just like Bart said, its either super stellar people or the most delinquent of the delinquents which is why there were often fights at lunch (we even shared a lunch room but sat on different sides according to school)
