Retro Studios had a lot to prove when they took over the Metroid franchise! Were they able to pull off a great first impression? Josh decides to find out! Игры
I'm glad someone else calls this one of the best games of all time.
I call it one of the best games ever too!
Metroid prime and halo 2 I think are the best games of all time.
This game is just amazing and has been since I was about 6 and at 24 it’s still amazing. Never liked having to find all the talismans to get into the crater. But fighting Ridley was totally worth it
this is one of the best ageing games ive ever seen. 12 years later and the graphics still blow me away and the immersion you feel in this game is astounding
Absolutely
DarthSalmon yep
It seems like a lot of Gamecube games age well.
M- Kirk I'd go even further and say that's the case for many sixth gen console games. It was a time when 3D graphics really started to look good, and still look good if they have a more stylistic appearance. Kinda like many 16-bit games
This was my first Gamecube game, I played it every single day as soon as I got hom from school and as soon as I woke up on the weekend. :')
Recently started replaying Metroid Prime as I never finished the first nor ever started the other two in the trilogy. And honestly, it's such an impressive game, especially for it's time and console. Sure, there are a couple things that aren't perfect, but it just does so many things right that a lot of other games would just look over. The immersion in the world, the mostly ambient soundtrack, the lore, the upgrades, the bosses... it's such a good game.
+Eric Powers (Popowerst) Prime two is pretty great. It's probably not as bad as most people say it is. It uses pretty much the same engine with some graphical enhancement, and it's a lot more serious and darker than the first game. It has it's own attributes that set it aside, but for the most part is very similar. Prime 3 wan't bad, it's really beautiful looking but it feels a bit off from the first two, a lot of dialogue and wonky wii controls make it less fun to play in my opinion.
3:06 I think the closest thing was Star wars republic commando, with bug guts, oil, and laser cracks on your visor. Great vid!
Ah man I really need to get my hands on Metroid Prime someday!
Man, you need to
I played it for the first time a few months ago
Mind. Blowing
I have the Trilogy Collection with the metal case, and I was stupid and bought the first one from a local retail store that sells old games. Always rely on those stores, my friend.
HoffayStudios35 I was gonna get the MP Trilogy when Gamestop reprinted copies but laziness got the best of me...
***** ebay bitch
Fsawk emulation baby
The opening of Metroid Prime is one of the best in video games. Not only is it a great graphical spectacle for the time of its release, but it was an amazing return after Metroid's 8 year absence. After slowly panning over the Frigate Orpheon, the music sounding like its from a Space Opera, Samus' Gunship appears, and takes its time to land, building the tension further. Then Samus finally appears in 3D glory, with an awesome new armor design and the camera taking its time to show off everything before switching to the First Person Perspective. Hold onto your butts!
There's a reason Metroid Prime is my favorite game of all time and its opening is only one of many reasons why. Such an incredible game.
Please Nintendo just give us another one
fragr33f WE GOT IT! OH ITS HAPPENING!
UltiMike 64 Lol can't wait to see the gameplay man.
If it has to be motion controlled, at least gimme a choice, and if it HAS to have people talking to samus, at least put more than 3 seconds into writing the dialogue.
Let's face it, most first person shooters suck, but Metroid Prime is definitely an exception. It's a difficult genre to pull off, but it can be done right if you put care into your design choices like Retro Studios did. They could have easily make Metroid Prime a lame Call of Duty clone, but they didn't. They made a game that still stays true to the franchise it hails from.
It's like the exact same as previois games, but with an extra dimension!
Aaron SanSevero
To me there are some really notable First Person Shooters like :
Doom
Doom 2
Doom 64
Half-Life
Half-Life 2
Halo : Combat Evolved
Halo 2
Halo 3
Halo : Reach(I liked it)
Metroid Prime 1
Metroid Prime 2
Metroid Prime 3
Duke Nukem 3D (Forever sucked)
Serious Sam : First Encounter
Serious Sam : Seecound Encounter
Serious Sam 3(2 sucked)
Quake 1
Quake 2
Quake 3
Unreal Tournament 1999
Unreal Tournament 2004
Time Splitters
And then there's like 5000 more that suck.
The Prime Trilogy only takes a knee to LoZ for my favorite Nintendo pieces. The graphics and gameplay were amazing and ahead of their time, plus they truly did keep the spirit of Metroid intact in a 3D world
I hope you do another segment on this game! The opening level is great, but Tallon IV is Really Freakin' Clever too.
Oh dear I ADORE Metroid Prime... fell in love head over heels for it at the age of 12, still playing it now at 26 and initiating my future husband to it! Best game I have ever played and one of the best of all time, Phazon Mines is still giving me chills!
Dude I'm playing it again lol I agree it's so good most people love this game unless you don't like shooters or puzzle solving games and exploring it has a little bit of everything
Hey RFC! I just wanted to take a second to thank you, though I doubt you'll see this comment haha. All of your videos are very well constructed and I love the way you really bring out the tiny details that make our favorite games... well, our favorite games haha (and that's not to mention the hilarity that is 64 Things). You've never failed to entertain or enlighten and you've even inspired me in part to create my own channel. You have my best wishes; I can't wait to see what's ahead!
Prime was my first Metroid, followed by 2, Corruption, and then Other M. I didn't play Super Metroid and Fusion until much later. I've since beaten and sold all but my original copy of Prime. Being my first fps, it holds a special place in my heart. I'll go back and play it 10 years later just because.
I love that background music and the use of To Zanarkand when Samus lost her abilities. It really fit it well imo
Saw you on Mass Effect DYKG. I went to your channel, subscribed then I watch one of your videos. So great...just. Uh. Amazing.
This episode reminds me of extra credits. I feel like you've mentioned them, but if you haven't or don't know about them, you should.
It does, especially now that EC has a new show specifically about game design.
the prologue and hell, even the title screen are excellent introductions of showing you what prime is all about
Here's hoping we get any sort of Metroid game announced at E3, a 2D sidescroller or 3D FPS will make me so happy cause it's my fav series ever. So glad you made this vid it was great!
You've really grown as a writer and video editor since I first started watching. I expect, before too long, this will be one of the most popular gaming shows on RUclips. Keep up the good work.
Always glad to see a new episode in my sub box.
Metroid prime is a CLASSIC
Another great video about one of the best stinkin' games ever! I could watch an analysis about every darn part of this game.
The scanner was my favorite part of this game. Also, the graphics are WAY better than I thought they would be considering the game's age. And how exactly did the first-person controls work on a Gamecube controller? I don't really remember, it's been a while... was the C-Stick used as the second analogue stick or something?
...Welp, brb, I'm gonna go buy the Prime Trilogy.
instead of a second stick to move your aim, enemies close to your firing direction would get a mini-target over them, and if you clicked a certain button when that happened, you would lock-on and your aim would automatically follow them, until you released the button. Also, if there was no enemy, you could keep pressed another button to stop walking and replace movement with aiming on the main stick.
I know if sounds clunky or maybe too easy, but trust me, to this day i have yet to find a single dual-stick FPS that feels anywhere near as good as this game did. Much better and more fun to play than using the aided aim that most modern FPS have.
The C-Stick was used to swap Beams when you get more than the Power Beam since they didn't stack in Prime until the third game.
Besides, Trilogy aiming is better in my opinion anyway, so it's a moot point if you get that version (thankfully since this comment popped up, now on the Wii U eshop!)
I'm so glad I subbed to this channel when you were a baby channel.
Dang, I really need to play this game...
OH AND ILU JISH C JISHUA
The Pirate Frigate Orpheon intro of Prime takes its inspiration directly from the Ceres Space Station intro in Super.
This doesn't really feel like a review for the game, but a review for the games opening level.
This isn't supposed to be a review
Chip Biscuit Almost a year l8
Not a problem
That opening puzzle on the space station actually stumped me a while back
then again, that was the first time I had EVER played a Metroid game and this was when the game like just came out. trust me, I thought that I was an idiot then for missing the obvious circle scanning spot.
The memories are overflowing!
star wars republic commander made you feel like you were looking through a space helmet.
Also I like how his intro is basically geek heaven, but he forgot to put some Metroid and some D&D in there.
What a Great Video, Prime is my Favorite Game ever
I remember I couldn't never finish the game because I never had a memory card, but now I finally got a gamecude with two memory cards and Metroid Prime.
I remember to start crying when i didn't manage to escape in time, lol. Good old times
Yes, finally a Metroid video!!!
Wow. I really need to play this game. Thanks.
like this show. great job. keep up the good work.
Star Wars: Republic Commando also did some stuff with the visor, such as steam and blood (or droid oil).
whats the song called that starts at 2:38
"Wouldn't a game where Samus get's barked orders all the time suck?" You mean like Fusion, one of the greatest Metroid games of all time?
I know, right? People complain about "Other M" because of that and yet everyone loves "Fusion", even though it has the same "Point A - Point B" estructure.
Yes, it actually makes more sense in Fusion because Samus is following orders in order to survive, meanwhile in Other M it kinda destroys Samus character as a strong female protagonist but still, the similarities are there.
Yea agree the samus voice could have been better for other m and that part with her being afraid of Ridley wasn't the greatest either but I personally liked the game overall the controls could have been better but yea both prime and m are cool to me
Link's AMV. Adam never said that, he just said she isn't allowed to use any lethal equipment.
And if fusion made any more sense is highly up to debate. The whole plot was pretty much avoidable if Samus had just destroyed the whole station when she found out everyone was dead. Instead she runs around aimlessly in an attempt to fix things but makes everything worse in the process, and in the end everything she did was for nothing. She just ends up destroying the entire station anyway.
She set off to destroy the ship when it became possible and after she investigated the entirety of the disaster. If she just blew it up early on she would run the risk of not being able to find the source of the problem and have no knowledge of how to deal with the problem should it arise again like the metroids did several times. She also would be without knowing how widespread it is and the severity.(They also don't even know if everyone is dead for sure till later in the game and still she wasn't shown to actually have the means to blow up the ship without dying in the process up till the end and even then it involved destroying SR388). Also she would have no reason to blow up the ship unless she knew she had to (which she didn't until the ending part of the game when she does exactly that) and considering adam had to edit her plans so she wouldn't blow herself up in the process of destroying the ship she most likely didn't know how to blow up the station(or if she was able to,) without killing herself even if you think she had justified a reason to think she should blow up the station earlier in the story. Also being forced to just follow a chain of orders for the plot rather being able to act freely and discover a large amount of the games mechanics and areas naturally is one of the largest complaints fusion gets. Its why it is often rated below Super Metroid and Metroid Prime. A bad part of a good game being put into a bad game doesn't make the part less bad it makes it even worse and more noticable. Also she didn't mindlessly obey orders, the ending act of fusion is her deliberately defying them because they aren't with in her and what she thought were the galaxies best interests and the entire section of the story where it is revealed the feds are evil is caused by her own autonomous actions of investigating the area beyond the bounds that she was supposed to and not just her following an order. She follows orders that are dumb for no real reason in other m. That is the closest thing we get to This is also ignoring that the entire dynamic of why she is following the orders and why the ones that are given are given work vastly more in fusion than in Other M. Samus trusts the feds in fusion because they outfit her with equipment and she has worked with them before. She follows orders like investigate this issue in that area because they make sense for her to follow and she is equipped with her gear as soon as it can be avaible to her. She doesn't take an optimal route only if the feds or the parasite or the malfunctioning ship are blocking it off. She only doesn't have gear that wasnt given to her because the feds act in their own interests not hers as she would and does rebel if she finds out they are up to something so they want to make sure she doesn't step outside the bounds of what they want her to do.While it makes sense that in other m samus would do investigations and stuff the same way it is noticeable the commands are different in nature when events like when samus a person whos profession is infiltrating facilities and planets underequipped with none to little knowledge of the areas layout or possible threats and defusing/destroying/investigating the area is not sent to infiltrate a section of the ship to destroy it and escape before she gets killed. This is eriely similar to zero mission with mother brains lair, space pirate ship, zebes and the starting ship in super the ending of fusion(and like all the SA-X sections) and the times it happens it the prime series. This is also discounting the armor stuff or the fact that spilting up a unit in an area and universe heavily inspired by the aliens franchise stuff make Adam deserve a Darwin awardAlso Samus's actions in fusion did accomplish a couple things. She saved the Zebestian animals, found the source of distress that had her called down there in the first place, and she found out the feds were secretly holding a Metroid cloning program and she insured the SA-X and Program started by the feds was destroyed.
I remember as a kid, I got stuck at the first boss........... and I never got to experience the full game........ :(
I got stuck at the second boss for a while.
That plant... thing.
ThatOneTryhardGamer i got stuck at end
I haven't played in a while, so iv'e never even seen the end. CSGO FTW.
Learn to side strafe/dodge :)
Nicholas Pearce that definitely helps
I freakin' LOVED Metroid Prime! The game looked gorgeous back then and it looks great even today. Now, I'm not obsessed with graphics like other people are, but I do kind of wonder how this game would look if it was given the Wind Waker HD remake treatment and released on the Wii U. That would be awesome!
Nice job throwing in that Fianal Fantasy X music
I had never played a metroid game before, but I just recently got super metroid on wii u and it's great. I might have to get one of the primes soon.
Star Wars Republic Commando did the whole visor thing, to great effect I might add.
Samus Aran needs to come back for more badass adventures :D !!
Will there be videos for the rest of the games in the Prime series?
Wonder if the time will ever pass when we can see a Metroid video without a shot at Other M worked into it.
Loved the video regardless.
That game was so much fun!
Star Wars: Republic Commando was a First Person Shooter that gave you the feel of wearing a helmet. Have you missed out on that awesome game?
Republic Commando also makes you look from the inside of the helmet. Check it out!
Awesome video
along with ocarina of time and super mario 64, this is one of my favorite games of all time
I love the way you set this up, I beat this game awhile back and the way you did it makes it seam like your talking about the whole game, but it was just the intro level ^_^ seriously if you even remotely like Samus or even puzzle action games go play the Metroid Prime games, they are some of the best games out there (yes better than COD shame on you for thinking that) I traded my game boy advance for this back in the day.
Yeah, new vid!
There's so much to say about this game! It deserves a sequel RFD episode!
star wars republic commando had the similar visor dirtying thing you were talk about
We need at least one comment about how good that use of To Zanarkand was.
I still need to finish Metroid Prime. It's probably one of my favorite Metroid games, though Super Metroid does put up one hell of a fight, and it's definitely amongst my favorite FPS's, slipped in with Halo: Reach and Bioshock as an utter masterpiece of programming.
Can you do a vid on 64 things wrong with Sonic 06? Or Maybe 360 things wrong?
Awesome!!!
I think really freakin' clever is really freakin' clever.
I feel like they are just teasing us by showing everything we can have/do.
ya God damn right it is...
Oh no, shit's exploding! Better stand still and look at it!
Republic Commando also did the awesome helmet thing.
I know this isn't the best gane, but in Orion Prelude your Hud gets frozen and you can see the rain on your helmet. And a mod for Battlefront 2 were you play as republic Commando Soldiers, where you have also this HUD view.
Hey, Just for the Sake of asking, can you do a Mini RFC of sorts on Pokemon X and Y's implementation of the seasons, relating back to the way it was used in Black(2)/White(2)? Look over X and Y's Locations, and how the game is played by most, and it shouldn't be to tricky to notice. Thanks, if you read through!
Imagine metroid prime on oculos rift, that would probably be one of the best uses of vr headsets technology.
Star Wars Republic Commando used the visor thing kinda, but who remembers that game?
You go brother (since were both Canadians)
The background music needed to be louder and the Final Fantasy music in there was a nice touch.
Halo 4 did that stuff with the HUD minus the reflection.
Halo does a really good job at making the player feel like their controlling a person and not a floating camera, especially Halo 4.
Yeah,about 11 years later?
Link TheWindWaker Not like it's a race. Sure, Metroid did it first, but 20 years from now, can it say it did it best?
Link TheWindWaker Halo 1 did it well too. Not as well as Prime, but still.
Star Wars Republic Commandos did the whole visor thing, and even better than Metroid I might add
Retro Studios is probably my favorite game developer of all time.
you do realize that when you go through the corridors to avoid the parasite swarms, you can go morph ball to speed things up right?
Yeah, I would actually purposely mess around so that I would feel at least a tiny rush of danger, getting to that last door with seconds remaining.... Otherwise you get to the end with like 3 minutes left.
Metroid developers are geniuses indeed, everything in the game is designed to teach the player how to play the game, and then once you know how to play you can use the skills you've learned to sequence break and make new challenges for yourself. I think the best part is they never just flat out tell you how to do something, they show you how to use things through the game, yes whenever you get missiles or something it tells you what button to press to activate them, but that doesn't tell you what you can do with them, you still have to figure that out.
LOVE this game. Prime 1-3 are great. LOVE Samus, too. One of the top women in video games, no doubt. Ranks up there with Freya Crescent and Alys Brangwin.
Oh, there's an idea. Phantasy Star IV. How it links all the previous games together into one continuity (even PS3), ties up many loose ends, and gives the series a great finale. [And I'm talking the RPG Phantasy Stars, not the PSOnline Action games, which I hate for being so good despite changing the entire style of gameplay and story and everything that was Phatnasy Star.]
Metroid Prime 2 was hell, literaly!
Was it bad?
About the helmet thing.Star wars republic commando also did this.
i like to play a wide variety of games, but purely hate FPS games. but i made an exception to this awesome ass game. you don't have to worry about ammunition or switching guns, you progress to get different kind of "weapons". and it's the first official FPS game to the nintendo franchise.
I so wish Nintendo would make another Prime-like Metroid. For me it was the definitive transition to 3D in the series, like Mario 64 or Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
first time i actually had a metroid game (had played bit of fusion with friends) it was echoes and holy shit i thought it was a horror game straight up with the zombies at the begining and very dark theme overall, the sense of dread was constant. still is my favorite of them all to this day and i can't believe why it hadn't build a huge fanbase back then.
That's what I think Prime 4 should be. Samus comes-to on a derelict ship overrun by parasite mad soldiery and pirates and over-run by mutant aliens...basically Dead Space with Samus.
That would be so sick i can't wait to see what it'll be.
I am going to play my copy now, Samus DOES rock!
Kira Caroso The impact crater in the 1st one is brutal the jumping part with the fission metroids is evil
Gahlok12 I know right!
Kira Caroso I got to that part today after nearly getting my butt kicked by Meta Riddly and then raged quit.
+Gahlok12 The main tricks are: 1) getting every upgrade and extra maximum you can, @2) figuring out the pattern of him, and 3) praying to what ever deity you believe in.
Kira Caroso Oh I survived the fight like I said it was the fission metorids that got me ticked off
Ohh god. Now I want to play metroid prime again. But my classic GameCube, is not in my possession at the moment. It's 100 kilometres away. But the time is 01 am something here, so I need to sleep.
this game's awesome
For relaunching Metroid just for it to be ripped apart again and then go dormant again... Hmm... Nintendo seems to like having series sit dormant long enough for people to really want another... is it just me or does that seem really freakin' clever?
I love It!!!!!!
Prime isn't ennnntirrreeely alone in making the HUD look like a helmet, but they did do it the best.
Halo 3 did it to some degree.
Part of it might be the changes in aspect ratio since Prime though. Back when it was square stuffing a helmet hud into the screen would more it obvious. In 16:9 though if they did the same thing I don't think it would be noticeable anymore.
to be fair you can't see samus' feet either
Metroid Prime truly is perfection, maybe aside from the awkwardness of the platforming occasionally.
Well I think I know what to buy on ebay now.
You wanna talk about awesome and clever intro stages? Check out Megaman X Intro Stage, or the Sequelitis episode on it
BRB, I'm off to Vintage Sock
Sorry... What? I wasnt paying attention due to the EPIC music playing in the background.
WOW... I need t get the trilogy, right now o_O.
uh.... no, you don't... the second and third games are both awful...
bob marley
What? Echoes & Corruption are great. They are both really solid sequels, if not better than Prime. I appreciate Echoes, because it was the first Metroid tittle to not depend on the crutch of nostalgia to be successful. non-chozo elements and new races & enemies. Corruption was a good finish to the arc of the trilogy, expanding on the new features of the original and it's sequel as well as adding improved features.
If you ask me, they should be experienced in the trilogy collection, beginning to end. Only then can you actually appreciate how the series improved with each installment.
Bro, the trilogy is on Wii U shop, got it on sale for £9, so you should see if it still is, assuming you own the console, that is. So far, after around 3 hours of the first Prime game, I freaking LOVE it!
Yeah I plan on getting it, thanks n_n
Go for the originals, the motion controls are a series downgrade.
This was my first gamecube game, I really loved this game because it used most text and little voice messages, because when I was small I could only understand english text, I remember I got stuck on the giant plant thing for a long time, but after one year I defeat the thing, but got lost on the game so I stopped playing it.
Can't forget the awesome multiplayer from echoes though.
+mastrvidman15 If that was online It would be almost as good a Super Smash bros. Damn that's a good idea for a future metroid release. Just a battle royale of samuses online on a high end system.
what about star wars republic commando? that had a similar HUD to metroid prime
