the most worrisome part about this whole thing (at least to me, a dark skinned BW), is that i don't think this was a troll. i think they were genuinely _that_ ill-equipped, ignorant, + unqualified.
and instead of hiring//consulting a Black person or someome who is qualified, they tried to do it themselves.
i'm not naïve, i know for a fact some brands use rage bait for marketing. i just don't think that's what's happening here (esp. b|c the owner admitted that this going wrong would likely bankrupt the company).
and _that's_ the worst part. that's what's scary about this whole thing. at least for me.
like....they have a whole company + nobody in the company stopped this before it hit shelves. nobody saw the problem before release. 😳TF??🤯 for me, _that_ reveals far more about this brand (+ the mindset of the creator//owner) than anything else.

youre raising a great point about who are the people they hire at research & development and the decision making level of this company.
i used to work at a prestigious european fashion brand and they would make business attire for like more well off women and there youd often have a "nude" layer under a sheer top layer or lace and guess what the ONLY "nude" color was?? (yea, it was peachy-pink) not one black or brown person worked at that entire company and when i pointed out their oversight they just acknowledged it and moved on.
i couldnt do anything about it so i left that company for this and other reasons and they went bankrupt like 3 years later. im still laughing about their demise but on the other hand this was 10 years ago and we are still not doing better!!

Funny thing about Fenty. My friend actually emailed them saying that the shades were not dark enough and got down to less quality in terms of undertones compared to other foundations in Fenty. They emailed back, told her that she was wrong about how Fenty looked on HER OWN SKIN and said they were actually very inclusive and the most inclusive-as if Rihanna was the first person to bring out 40 shades. Some small business black women had been doing that for timeee. When she emailed again and showed proof they ghosted her.
I lowkey have beef with Fenty because of this since when you look at all the actual darkskins reviewing it, they give a great review but they all still say they need a better match or they pretend something that isn’t matching looks good enough. I think Fenty really opened the gates for every company to do this fake inclusivity.

Rihanna's just as bad with her bra company too. She claims they're very size inclusive, but they're not. They don't make bras in larger cup sizes and their size range is smaller than places like bravissimo or legacy bra makers like Panache or Freya, let alone actually size inclusive bra companies like Ewa Michalak. I'm not saying it's equivalent, I'm just pointing out that it's a pattern of behaviour. Fake inclusivity that doesn't actually do the work.
SavageX bras are also usually shown on models wearing the wrong size too. Don't claim you make bras for everyone when you very obviously don't. It's fine to be more specialist, just be upfront. This isn't even touching the shady subscription service. Who needs or wants a new bra every month anyway?

    • @thegrimlooper
      @thegrimlooper 4 месяца назад +12

You’d think so! But nope. Your eye color, hair color and undertones matter. We all have color pallets that look best for each of us (I’m a clear winter, but there are multiple ‘winters’ as well as other choices that go based off your specific preferences and body). Plus, your accessories like jewelry and glasses can have a huge impact on what looks good on you. Im pretty white, but I have pinky skin and my blue veins pop through but I also have so many freckles that look painted over. I need a specific shade because there are a lot of undertones, olive undertones, yellow undertones, blue undertones, etc. but the way they look changes based on what you wear, time of year, etc. Like in high school, I’d have a “winter” foundation and a “summer” foundation because I naturally tanned SO much that I had to wear a completely different foundation shade. So, I agree with you that they should just release all shades at once. But just like darker skin tones, lighter skin tones have a big range too. I personally cannot find a shade that works for me so I choose not to wear that kind of makeup. Those who choose to wear it deserve to have what works for them. I don’t think people should have to mix multiple colors together to reach what they need, which is what I had to do to even get close to a match. It’s extra money and usually ends up wasted because it’s annoying to have to go through so many different steps and shades to even try to get close (commented this very early on so I didn’t hear this basically stated, sorry .. )

Which is unfair, because then you get stuff like this mess and you end up actually excluding a huge range of people.
I reckon there would be a big market for an indie brand that only focused on dark tones.
As @Grimlooper said there is such a huge range of skin tones - and indie brands can only produce so many, but if they're going to put that focus on only one end of the spectrum, they should be upfront about it rather than promising "inclusivity" that they can't, or won't, achieve.
Jen Luv did a good video on it, and invited Audra Reins to speak as well (who seems cool so I need to check out her content). She did a really good job at addressing the question you're asking.

@@witchcraftandlizardry it is very hard. I’m almost 25 and I’ve been playing with makeup since I was 12. Not only do I have sensitive skin (certain products will cause my eyes to puff up and it’ll make my eczema rampant) but im in the middle of lightest color/tones, so Most items that fit me perfect would end up getting discontinued😔 I personally have been using a tinted moisturizer with SPF and it is just enough pigment that it doesn’t COAT my skin, hiding my freckles, but it does even things out and provides moisture, SPF and beautiful looking skin. I will use a brand matching Powder to ensure the formulas won’t reject each other. Right now, I go to my Walgreens because they often times have the lightest and darkest shades on clearance because everyone here is in the middle. So, I could get an $20 foundation for like $4 each! Walgreens also offers $7 of $25 purchases so that is even a better discount that would allow me to get other products.

I want to give the brand the benefit of the doubt, but this just feels all kinds of mean and cruel. Especially without a pure white shade in the line that echos the same extremism. Personally, I think the way to curate a shade range would be to compile hundreds of photos and color swatch them in procreate. Narrowing those down into groups and formulating a range based on that data. Using actual skintones and numbers would make sure this bullshit doesn't happen

I did not have the luxury of going to the drug store or beauty supply to grab a powder or foundation bc my shade didn’t exist there. I had to go to MAC bc they were the only ones to my knowledge that made stuff for me. Slowly more brands had more shades but they were expensive. I had to drop minimum $40 for foundation. There were no contour shades to speak of. To see a brand so this in 2024?? It’s gross.. They simply just had to say “we don’t want to sell to black people”, and that would’ve been better than releasing this black pigment. No one is pure black. No matter deep someone’s skin is they have undertones bc that’s how skin works. I’m glad people are rightfully calling them out because this was so uncalled for.

Also I don't care if a brand says that I can sleep with makeup on, I won't do that, especially when that brand is constantly lying. Idk anything about foundation formulation, but having a layer of pigments on my skin during the night, doesn't seem like a good idea.
Also I have noticed some beauty products having well written, detailed and very similar reviews in websites like Sephora. I even noticed that some of those same reviews are present in different websites and some of them even wrongfully mention another product. So I really don't trust reviews on websites anymore. So when i first saw this foundation i thought oh it must be a mixer but... Yeah this is awful, its literally just black with no undertone and the shades leading up to it are awful.
Foundation shades are something that has always bugged me. I started with makeup as a teen in the early 2000s when the foundation range were three shades of orange. Things have improved a lot now but the majority of foundations and concealers are still catered to white people with medium skin tones and those of us outside of that still need to faff around with mixers etc.

Apart of everything, marketing make-up product as safe to sleep in is ridiculous. It is pigment. It's not safe to sleep in makeup that a person wore the entire day. Skin produces oil throughout the day and it mixed with pigment and smog, clogs the skin. It's not that you can't sleep wearing other makeup because of "t h e chemicals". It's a kind of wellness washing and has the same vibe as "guilt free" and "additives free". It shows lack of sincerity and their idea to play on consumers' idea of "natural ingredients" in relation to "purity". They know it, and they exploit it because no self-respecting and honest cosmetic chemist would sincerely say anything like this. It itself is very telling, and then the shade range issue.
