Protecting Banana Trees During Winter

  • In this video I am discussing how to protect banana trees during the winter season. There are a lot of ways to overwinter banana trees and shelter them when it is cold out, but I'm only going over a few simple methods. The banana trees in this video are Musa basjoo, the japanese fiber banana. There are a lot of "cold hardy" banana trees that everything in this video would apply to. Protecting bananas in the ground really isn't very difficult even though there are some intense degrees people will go to protect their pseudostems from the cold. As long as the corm underground is sheltered, the plant should be just be fine and return when warm weather shows up the following spring.

Being doing this for 15years. Great points, and a great seller when split early. Mine get much taller than my roof. Have about 50 in the ground, 15 in the house and sold about 40 this year. It's best by far one of my favorite plants. Thanks for your thoughts!

I’m in zone 6B. I cut my banana trees down in early November. I leave about a foot of growth. As I add the mulch around the plants, I insert a large white heavy sock over each stalk. Adds another layer of protection against the cold.

In india we used banana leaf as a plate for food on dining table. After cleaning with water. Dont waste them. U can steam ur corn meal with ur meat and vegies in banana leaf.

I live in Oklahoma, I dig mine up every year, bring them inside, put them in cool dark closet, they get bigger every year!🌞

I can't watch you video on overwintering banana trees right now because it's the last nice day forecast this year so I'm moving mine from the wetland to a hole in the ground... Fingers crossed. So far as I can tell, bringing yourself to cut through the giant stem is the hardest part. It cries when you cut it!

New rule: nothing that can't survive the winter goes in the wetland without a pot.

@@TropicalPlantParty What I find helpful, is once I see a weather forecast that works for me, I stop looking. Still get caught off guard, but for a few days I'm sure the weather will cooperate. Reduces stress. :)

I have had these for at least 20 years. They keep dying on me. I used to cut all the leaves off, dig them up and take them inside, but I would lose most of them each year. I started digging them up with the leaves on and taking them inside and I would still lose many of them each year. I also have had problems with moles eating the roots off and killing them. They usually thrive really well in the summer months, but I always end up having to buy more in the spring since most of them die. I will try your method next time. Thanks for the tips.

Great video! Its giving me a lot of new ideas. I was thinking of placing a clear garbage can upside down to protect them from the wind and snow. Do you think that will keep the stalk protected enough till spring? My goal is to keep a 30 in stalk In order to achieve a heigher growth height. I live in jersey where the winters can be brutal. In years past I Usually cut them down to 6 inches, mulch with dirt, then place a black construction bag over it

    Hey Jeff!
Definitely some solid tips! That’s fine that you didn’t have a ton of clips, it’s nicer to look at the plant anyway. My first winter I cut the bottom of a garbage can off and filled it up with mulch... I called it the banana can... I do mix my tree leaf mulch with the banana leaves (yup I’m one who thinks it’s a great idea...) and then mulch on top of that. My region of zone 6a has temps at or below freezing for a few months so water is consistently frozen anyway. Using their leaves recycles the nutrition they took up and kickstarts them in spring. But, I’m overwintering a 2 year old Musa velutina seedling in the ground this year... you think I should go nuts protecting it because this will be it’s first winter? Will velutina even overwinter? I also got hundreds of seeds, so I’m likely to get some more seedlings. That’s a close second favorite banana species.

Thanks! You know how it goes with cold protection, can talk forever about it since there are so many options. Great use for the trash barrels, I used to do that with my windmill palms when they were in the ground. I cut the bottom and would tie frost cloth over the top with a stake in the middle to keep it sloped so the snow would roll off. Worked really well! Velutinas are awesome! They are surprisingly hardy too, definitely worth giving them a try in winter. I had one that came back for me for about 3 years until we had a horrible winter where it stayed below 30 for about 8 weeks. ... and that's how most winters have been ever since that year. Have you read, "palms wont grow here and other myths" but david a francko? He was a professor at Miami university in ohio and the book is my all time favorite since I was a kid. I'll send a link on instagram, cant send it here or else it will go to spam.

what about wrapping it where it stand in heat coil and burlap? Im not sure how your winters are. I could probably get away with that being in 8a.
