Why does it take so dam long for news reporters to be able to talk back & forth with each other (3 seconds i counted with one comment) when it takes less than a second for my voice to travel on a cell phone to someone that's completely on the other side of the country? 🤔
Because the audio in the earpieces they use to talk to each is sent through many layers of equipment from the studio to the truck then to the reporter. All of that takes time, and unlike a cell phone with a small amount of data required to just transmit a voice, the tv links send the data for the image (both directions) the primary audio from the reporter's mic (one way) AND the audio for the earpiece. The data usage is prioritized in that order, so that is why there is such a huge lag. Also bear in mind that most TV remote trucks use satellite links, so the sheer physical distance the signals travel is many times greater than that of a cell/phone signal. If you have local TV stations off a antenna and a satellite feed you can clearly see this, as the same channel on satellite lags the OTA (Over The Air, or antenna) signal by several seconds.
Technology can't change the laws of physics. Oh, and BTW, in terms of real time, your cross country call still has a lag, it's just not as noticeable but if you had a clock at your place and your friends, both synchronized to a common time reference, you would see in each direction that there is a delay as you pointed out in your example.
