Air Raid Siren

  • My neighbor bought a surplus Air Raid Siren and it has been living in his driveway a few doors down from me for the last year or so. He finally got the power inverter he needed to run it last night. I was in my living room when it started up. Hadn't heard that sound since they tested the sirens in my home town in the 1960's during the Cold War era. It was very surreal to hear that sound. Walked over and took the following video.

    It was sitting rusting in a field where it sat after having been cut down from the pole it used to be on. He got it for free and completely restored it. It is a CLM air raid siren.

    Thank you all for the great comments. I spoke with the owner yesterday and he has been putting the final touches on the control board and will run up the siren one last time in a few days. At that time I will be taking my hi-def cameras over to record the event from two angles, plus will interview him about the siren and have him take us on a guided tour of this amazing piece of history. He just finished a full restoration of an old army jeep over the winter, so I'll get shots of that too

    Thanks for posting this guys loved it! You guys are around my age "46" so I too grew up in the cold war and in the city of London Ontario where there was once alot of CLM's such as yours and a few Allertors but mostly CLM..Then in 1996 they all came down overnight pretty well. I tried to purchase one, but had no luck with the government "crown assets division" who told me they had them in storage, but when I inquired about a purchase? Like most shit with our beloved government I got just ignored

    The back rotor has ten ports but the stator has four. It is the number of rotor ports which determine the pitch. Apparently these were designed as single-tone sirens with the back rotor as an afterthought when Civil Defence mandated dual-tone sirens.

    No idea about the tones, or the speed of rotation. It belongs to my neighbor. I know it took him months to find an inverter (or something) that he said he needed to run it and I think he said he used a step down (or up) transformer for one of the motors. I think it may have been the rotational motor and that would explain why it is spinning as fast as it does. We used to have these in Edmonton when I was a kid and I heard them go off occasionally by accident.

  • @robertgift
    @robertgift 12 лет назад

    Oh. Thank you. Correct. The rotor determines how many pressure releases (bursts) per revolution. Typical 3,450 RPM = 57.5 Revolutions Per Second time 10 = 575 Hz. Less efficient if rotor and stator openings do not match.
    That explains it. CD wanted dual tone.
