I estimate my new pond I just finished to be about 45k-55k gallons, give or take a few thousand gallons, it’s down into groundwater and also has a creek flowing into and out of it. I put 40 2inch bluegill, 20 6inch+bluegill, 2 10inch largemouth bass, and 2 6inch channel cats, i threw ~100 minnows in as well. I’ve wanted my own pond like this my whole life, and I finally got it. My fish been in there for a week now, and they already come to chow time and battle the ducks for some pellets in the mornings and evenings.
I live on the gulf and had my list of favorite best tasting fish and catfish wasn't on it. It suddenly became number one after eating organic farm raised at a restaurant

I worry because the neighborhood does an effective job spraying and killing bugs that I believe would otherwise assist in feeding the fish. These fish will not respond to any kind of not-natural feed I try so the numbers and size stay kinda low. My question is if I introduce catfish will they effect the growth of the other fish? also is it feasible to stock flathead catfish? thanks
Bass dont eat commercial fish food , bluegill will but may not be able to eat the larger floating catfish food , you may want to feed a combination fish food which has 3 or 4 sizes of pellets ,some sink some float for awhile. You put blue cats and flatheads in a pond and they will strip the pond of other species unless you have excellent cover and habitat.The flatheads will eat the bass crappie and bream.Channel cats wont eat your other recreational fish unless they die and sink to the bottom.You can train channel cats to eat anything from commercial feed to bread , scraps, etc. I used to throw afterbirth from my cows and ship in 1 pond full of big 6 to 9 lb cats and they ate it like piranhas. They would swim to the surface and circle just feeling the vibrations of the ATV or pickup going around the pond
I have a electric bug zapper hanging out over my pond so everything falls in the pond, moths Japanese beetles June bugs etc fall into the pond and feed bullfrogs , bream, cats and fingerling bass at night
Try putting some habitat like porcupines in a area you want to concentrate baitfish or fry after spawning.Once the fish start using the new submerged structures concentrate on feeding near the areas you have added structure
Pond boss how long does it take for me to see new catfish in my pond.I have a channel and blue mix breed of catfish in a 1/2 acre pond.and I do Feed regularly
A big bullhead would be 2.5-3 lbs , after 3 years, A channel cat on feed will weigh 6 lbs in 3 yrs with regular summer feeding and dormant winter( no feed during cold water temps) your cost to build and maintain a pond plus food costs will be the same but your return on investment dictates stocking channels and tilapia together if you are feeding, then remove the tilapia in the fall as water temps drop. My tilapia went from 6 oz fish to 3.5 lbs in 145 days last summer plus they reproduced regularly and feed the bass already in the pond when I added the channel fingerlings in late May along with the blue Nile tilapia. The cats went from 6 inches to over 14 inches by 180 days. I fed the tilapia every morning and the catfish after dark 5 nights a week
Cats dont eat duck weed enough to suppress it( baby channel cats will eat some, tilapia do but it takes hundreds to see a decrease in duckweed if you are heavily infested.

I put 3 in my fish hobby pond this spring .Tilapia are also vegans and do help manage a pond, plus they fight like the devil if you catch them. Get a cane pole and braided line with a gold perch hook. Wet your catfish food and mold it around the gold hook and gently set it out with no weight.

That’s a great combination because hybrids don’t breed
To stock 20-30 channel catfish...you don't need much room at all. A 1/10 acre pond would grow that many catfish.
