The Leica 75mm Summarit is an underrated, fast, and unknown lens to most in the street photography community. It's also inexpensive when I bought it at $800. At a semi telephoto focal length, this 75mm lens unlocks a lot in what I could do to complement my typical 28mm Summicron setup.

Yeah man… another banger. Really enjoyed this video. Beautifully explained. Thanks for sharing the insight. J
What I love about telephoto lens are the compression and juxtaposition you can create. Gotta love the emphasis on how small the subject is and/or how big the backdrops are
oh definitely
Love longer focal lengths like this. On my Fuji I used to have a 75mm equivalent lens that was so fun! Right now my favorite prime is a 135mm f2 (200mm ff equivalent), it’s incredible! It’s just great to be able to exclude clutter from your frame with longer focal lengths.
the dramatic perspectives off those two lenses you mentioned are so nice and can def make for great photos
Very cool to hear your take on this 😊
As an introvert I prefer shooting longer lenses on the street, but haven’t tried anything longer then 50/60mm.
Also I think with 75mm I prefer SLAs, although I love shooting with my MP and M3 😊
Happy new year and awesome videos as always mate!
being farther away, for sure, helps me with my anxiety with street photography too. it def feels like a vacation from my regular process. SLR's are really nice for these tighter focal lengths for sure, which is why I have my R8 on standby haha
I love an 85mm…the compression is where it’s at. Plus I like the tight framing because I think too many street photographers don’t pay attention to peripheral distractions that creep in with wider focal lengths…
100% agree, All the summarit line up from Leica underated. they all small and sharp enough lenses
Yes I rate them highly too. Great value. Well for a Leica lens they are 🤭
One thing I love about fast telephoto lenses is how they can make subjects look small in comparison to the environment. The background blur makes the subject get a little of that “tilt shift” effect and makes them look small in comparison. I’ve heard many times that my photos makes the subject (which most of the time aren’t humans, just nature things) look like miniatures.
By the way, are you on Cara? I’d love to follow you there and see your work! I don’t use Instagram anymore because I freaking hate it.
Apparently having 1.4 leica magnifier attached, helps tremendously with composing on longer focal lengths. I haven’t tried it myself but many people recommend this.
I just spoke to a friend about this and I’m thinking about picking up a Light Lens Lab 1.4x magnifier. Might be the last piece I need
@whoschrischu if you do it, let people know if it helps, this may be a game changer. I’m planning to buy 90mm Elmarit later on but these tight little framelines are successfully keeping me on postponing the purchase 😆
I use the 75mm Summicron and it’s a useful focal length just needs care with focus wide open. I think if I was buying now the Elmarit would be my choice.
yeah that f/2 aperture would be tough to NOT miss focus on a 75mm focal length
it’s a great lens. Used one for years and it’s good for taking a lot of photos. Got some great pictures of my dogs with it ! (And some street stuff too ).
A lot of people use them for portraits too.
Nice video Chris. Happy New Year.
Happy new year!
I definitely prefer shooting wider (35 and 50). I used the 75 APO for a month and it became my favourite glass by Leica ever. But it was really difficult to focus. I have been using the 90mm elmarit for two weeks now, and surprisingly, find this easier to focus than the 75 APO. I don't know why haha.
Love the look of the 75mm
Been subscribed long enough to remember when you called 50mm “lazy”. Curious to know if you still feel that way about shooting longer? Love your work, and happy New Year man.
I don’t feel that way at all anymore haha and we call that ✨growth✨
@ respect 💯
Great video man! It was nice running into you in SOHO
It was great to meet you!
I have the 75mm Summicron, and as good as the glass is, I rarely use it. It’s like you said, hard to compose in the small frame lines. I always seem to miss the “bigger picture”
yeah it def feels like a diff ballgame with this focal length. personally, it's harder to sync with the 75mm because I haven't consumed a lot of photos of this frame, so it's lowkey hard for me to even imagine what I could get that feels "right" to me.
Also the 75 Summicron looks like such a nice lens
Spary and pray homie haha
I love the Voigtlander 75mm f/1.5
Great, now I need this lens
You would destroy with this lens for sure for sure
Two words: Saul Leiter
damn it. how could I forget
@@whoschrischu in fairness, I think he was mostly known for using a 135mm, but I think there’s a lot to be learned from his approach and his choices when it comes to street comps with a longer lens.
@@ErikFritzWasn't it a 85? 😉
He used all kind of gear, actually.
To quote him: "I liked different lenses for different times. I am fond of the telephoto lens, as I am of the normal 50 mm lens. I had at one point a 150 mm lens and I was very fond it. I liked what it did. I experimented a lot. Sometimes I worked with a lens that I had when I might have preferred another lens."
@@LordPhilOne I probably shouldn't have said "mostly known"... I heard that once (and can't remember if I read it or saw it in a video) and it resonated with me, so it's much more likely that he's mostly known *to me* for using a 135! 😉 But, as your quote attests, he was known to use longer lenses on a pretty regular basis, so I hope my point remains essentially valid.
@@ErikFritz it definitely does 🙂
It looks like you need to come to Alaska to warm up 😂 the only thing is that there’s noooobody walking around here though.
At this point, Alaska is warmer. But you’re also right…who would I photograph 😆
The first Summarit predates the Elmarit name
Oh man, last week-end I was trying to convince myself not to buy that exact lens that was just in front of me at a Leica store. I had succeeded, so far. Damn you. 😅
😂😂😂
Great Video
All the summarits are underrated Leica discontinued it probably cuz they were worried no one would get the cron
Dude did you sang that one off of KEH?
That's what's I’m wondering.
There's a Leica 75mm f/2 Summicron on KEH for $3,800 😢
motoring coffee t-shirt! tell me you're from California without telling me you're from California.
Damn. The hints are hinting too hard
Just for shIt$ and giggles, I went to see what Ken Rockwell had to say. He's not impressed with the Summarit line.
His recommendation is to buy a used older lens for best bang for your buck.
Very very few photogs can use this in zone focus for film photography and more so street ....just saying ,.
Hey man, I just wanted to tell you you're not helping me with gas these past few months. 😅
😅
7 artisan 75mm f 1.25 Lens for Leica M about $449, new. KEH has one for $305 ;)
Yes, it's underrated - but also not really exciting. With 800$ you mean the "used" price?
great, i just need to get a leica m6
2025 is the year!
Was unknown, now propably nowhere to be found
