    Just so you know, not sure if anyone else has said yet, but Peru has different outlet sockets. They not only have the A and B that we have in the U.S. but also the C, E, and F types.

    I don't know if anyone else mentioned it, but southern Peru uses C type electric adapters; northern Peru uses A type like we do.

    Recently picked up an Anker 10,000 and a Canon g7x mark II for a week on the Long Trail in my home state of Vermont. Thank you so much for all of your videos Darwin. They are truly inspiring. Building my own gear collection and planning future hikes is something that brings me almost unrivaled joy and peace. If you ever plan on hitting Vermont's Long Trail in the future it would be a dream come true to hike some of it with you, or even just shake your hand and thank you for how much you have inspired me and helped change my life in positive ways. Can't wait to see what 2020 has in store for you. Keep on hiking brother!

    My hats off to you for packing a DSLR and lens’s, I carried a D700 and 3 lenses through Alaska. When I returned I promised myself never again . I bought a LUMIX ZS100 , has a Leica 25mm-250mm , 1 “ mirror and shoots video at 4K , weighs in at 10 oz w/battery, but I’m not a blogger and I do appreciate being a benefactor of the extra weight you’re willing to carry !!

    Well, Darwin, it appears the gods are favoring you with your Canon gear selection. You have probably heard the recent Canon announcement about their new storage cloud for Canon only users, to begin sometime in April. This announcement was made about the same time as their R5 development announcement in the last few days. With the right wi-fi capable Canon camera, this will save all of us photographers a tremendous amount of uploading time because, once enabled, this new cloud system will automatically upload all of your photo/videos from your Canon wi-fi enabled camera to Canon's new cloud service and also other formats such as Google Photos. Can't wait for it to come out. Should be a tremendous help for hikers needing to upload their photo media. Happy hiking and photographing. Love your videos.

    Great video Darwin! After breaking so many legs on those bendable tripods I finally took your advice and got a UltraPod II. For such a simple piece of equipment I've found it to be the most useful (and durable) and definitely one of my favorite pieces of gear for 2019. I'm hoping to make it up to Flagstaff for the premier - looking forward to it!

    Also a camera geek and agree 100% that they are worth the weight. Love my EOS R - it's great. Also love the Peak Designs clip - those are great (although, I use a Cotton Carrier, but they are both great!). That lens is very interesting...
    Oh - heads-up on the GDT - cellular coverage is not a given - so if you are using your phone for navigation, then you might have times when you can't connect to update position, etc. You can download maps of course. A solution that I've seen is to get an inReach and that can bluetooth to the phone and uses satellite positioning.

    Would personally choose a 35mm lens for the old school dokumentary feel "but to each his own". I would recommend a variable polarisation filter for the lens since you have a rear mounted nd-filter. Just to adapt the colors/fill of the sky and to be able to shoot thru the surfaces of lakes and rivers.

    Great video buddy! I’ve shot with that camera as well. Just so you know 8bit for 4k is probably the minimum quality you can find these days. 1080p actually looks better on the R. For 4k you really want 10bit, especially for busy scenes (leaves, moving water,...). Also that 24mm lens isn’t weather sealed so keep that in mind if using in the rain. Finally don’t forget the R crops 4k footage to 1.6...

    I like this set up a lot. I am still relatively new to hiking with a DSLR. I’m using a LUMIX g80. The quality of a DSLR is a nice step up from the I phone and Go Pro. Although they defiantly still have their place for varying situations like you said. I’m defiantly going to be getting that peak design capture clip though. And the tripod that you mentioned. I recently picked up the the pd wrist strap/cuff just in case I dropped my camera whist filming. I would recommend it if your interested. Happy Hiking.

    Apple 11 Pro can shoot video just as good as your Canon EOS R / 24mm F2.8 setup. And with new multi camera capture APIs and app, you can shoot picture in picture fro some very nice views. Having Go Pro as a backup / on the move action cam is an excellent idea though.
    For ear buds I would go with Powerbeats Pro just because they stay in ear better on the move and you will never lose them. I already lost one Airpod when it slipped out of my ear and into dense brush never to be seen again.

      @ReversePeople 4 года назад +1

      Fair enough, and thank you for the reply. It’s just that you’d mentioned in a recent video that you were constantly searching for the perfect gear. So, since the NU25 has a broader output spectrum (1-360 lumens vs 10-150 lumens), a longer throw (266’ vs 154’), a larger battery (610mAh vs 170mAh), better impact/weather resistance (IP66 vs IPX4), is more feature-rich (adds SOS, beacon and red caution light options) and is priced and weighs about the same, I was curious why the Nitecore hadn’t made it on to your gear list. It may not be perfect, but it’s empirically [much] better.
      I love your channel and very much appreciate all your awesome content. Thank you, truly.

    I am still torn between taking my Sony a77 or the a5000. Both older cameras but I try not to upgrade as long as the old ones are still running. It is a good way to burn money. At the moment I trend towards the smaller a5000, because of its size and the connectivity options. But it requires an external audio recorder since it has no mic-in. Only real downside it has is the actual lack of physical buttons.

    I lugged a Hasselblad kit all over the mountains in the Uttaranchal region of India's Himalaya, too damned heavy. Downsized a bit to a Nikon D2X kit, still too heavy. Then started shooting with Leica gear (love the M10/35mm, f/1.4 Summilux combination), not so heavy except in expense. But still thinking for travel and trail the Leica Q might be the answer. Light, compact, very water resistant. just about perfect. Also, because of the small size, the tripod can be lightweight as well.

    Great Video. I'm vlogging my first thru hike this summer, the JMT SOBO, and I have found myself watching and rewatching your videos about camera gear and electronics. I had a question about carrying extra batteries. I'm guessing that your camera, like mine, can charge with USB, and not a separate battery charger. So what is the reason for carrying extra batteries? Did you find that 10,000 isn't enough power to keep your things charged, and so an extra battery is necessary?
    Also, interested to hear more about your experience, or the experience of others seeing this, with using the SD to iphone lightning cable. Like, are you able to put clips in your video editing software in town pretty easily, or does that overpower the iphone.
    Thanks!

    Hey Darwin! We are headed out on the AT in March, too - we will make sure to say hi as you pass us! I love seeing other people's camera gear (I was looking forward to watching yours when you posted about it on IG yesterday)! We are also not content with just using a phone on the trail and will be carrying heavier and more camera gear! Photography and videography are big passions of ours and we are really looking forward to capturing our journey and sharing it with others, to hopefully inspire them to follow their dreams, and to share with family and friends that don't or won't get the opportunity! We have our camera gear for this hike (maybe some ND filters) but will definitely look into some items you mentioned later on - for one the EOS R is on our list!
    Do you edit from your phone? A computer? Or does someone back home edit your trail videos for you while you are hiking?
    Cheers!
    Brady & Carlie

    Since I only capture for myself and my family (cuz I'm boring as hell, no screen personality), I just use my Note 10 and a Sony Action cam at 1080p. But I have used Ultrapods for years! From when I used to carry a film DSLR to now. I use my Ultrapod mostly but have an Ultrapod II also if I bring my DSLR. But I'm going to get your mount. Thx!

    Love your videos, I have been using the Fenix series watch for many years hiking and climbing. I have the 5x with full topo maps at your ready for 14 days on one charge and a full-time digital compass, heart rate, step counter are pre. A little expensive but I feel are a lifesaver. I've been in a high elevation where my phone did not like the cold. But my Fenix keeps going strong. Fenix 6 has solar and mp3 Bluetooth. Have you ever looked at these devices?

    Slways enjoy you content! I'll be picking up the M50 soon! Another Apple Koolaid drinker lol. The sound quality on those Airpods is terrible...only good for Podcasts, not music. Sennheiser for me. I opted for the Samsung Note 8 for an additional, removable SD card plus the ability to write names on pics since I can't remember anymore :-( After corrupted memory I decided to stick with 64GB and carry several. One card is for my music library and movies when in camp. 64GB on the phone also has music and storage and is plenty given the SD card slot. And it's waterproof if I don't feel like dealing with the GoPro. Options, options, options!

    DARWIN
    DO YOU EVER FEEL AS THOUGH FILMING A HIKE TAKES AWAY FROM THE IMMERSION AND/OR OVERALL SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE OF A HIKE?

    • @DarwinOnthetrail
      @DarwinOnthetrail  4 года назад +12

      No. It adds to my experience. It makes me stop & really look at my surroundings. Then I get to visit it again while editing. Once you do a Thru-Hike & your on a trail for 4-6 months... that spiritual experience starts to fade away. Filming my hikes gives me a new purpose after being on trail so long. 😉

    I have been wanting to see one of these videos about your camera set up for quite some time! Thank you for the great video! Do you store your cameras on the top or in the middle of your pack? And how does inclement weather play into that? I just got back into photography & I am thinking about where I would put my camera in my pack if it got too wet or where I would store my things generally in relation to all the other equipment in my pack. Thanks for the videos & keep up the great work!

    You should look into graphene power banks that charge in 20 minutes to an hour. Not many products are out currently, but the ones coming out this year look sweet!

      I'm with you, I've made the switch to Bluetooth mostly but I think when I go hiking, I'll still bring my corded pair. They don't need a charge and they're comfy, so why not.

    Great video. You mentioned that you transfer the footage onto your iphone. from there do you upload it to the cloud? Do you edit on your phone or when you get to a town, home, or in another way? Thank you, Darwin. I am looking forward to seeing more and taking you tips with me on the AT in 2020.

    Darwin, will your iPhone hold all the downloads for your hike, or will you delete after editing? Do you shoot in Raw? I imagine you do. I am always curious how you guys store all your data. The file sizes seem like they would be huge.

    Are your lenses compatible for a Sony mirrorless body which is smaller? My personal recommendation to you would be an Olympus body because it's even more compact and has the best image stabilization.

    I was wondering how you manage your iPhone battery while you're on the trail? It sounds like you use it for navigation, tunes, photos etc and based on my iPhone...my battery would be dead after a day of use. Any tips or tricks?
