  • Our president at Weems & Plath, Peter Trogdon, takes time to show how to calibrate a few of our barometers. This video is helpful in showing how to determine what the pressure of the barometer should be set to and how to adjust it.

    Thank you Peter, pressure tested an oldie that'd been kicking around , a Taylor, now can calibrate!

    Thank you so much. I’ve changed home and I thought my barometer was broken.

    In the US, weather forecasts are amazing, I lived there a couple of years, even broadcasts to like 10 days ahead are done with a lot of accuracy. In Europe, central Europe even, my God it is bad...people here can't even predict two days ahead, no joke. Best weather forecast you have here is having your own barometer.

      Weather forecast here in central Europe is EXCELLENT for three days. At least as precise as in the US. But there are a lot of people in the US who think that everything is much better in the USA than anywhere else. But this is simply not true.

    Worth mentioning that most of the time bad weather does not cause a barometer drop. Small systems bring rain/snow/clouds without a drop in the atmospheric pressure, in fact these small systems may actually cause an increase in atmospheric pressure. It's mostly the larger systems that will cause a pressure drop. In other words., most of the time these barometers are worthless.

    Is it best to calibrate barometers when the atmospheric pressure is in the middle of the barometer’s measuring range? I calibrated mine when the atmospheric pressure was about 29.42 inHg and now it’s off when it’s 29.79 inHg. In know all instruments have some error and was just wondering if the middle range would be the best sweet spot.

    if your barometer is at some hight like it is on the ships usually 25 m above sea lever , how we calibrate for that ?

      Hi. Thank you for your question. We recommend reading "The Barometer Handbook" by David Burch. It's written by one of the leading meteo-instrument experts in the country and should help answer any questions you have. You can find it on our website: www.weems-plath.com/Barometer-Handbook.html

    How much workdone by barometer ? In joules?
    Aneroid barometer do how much work in joules?
    If we make a 10000000x bigger models then will it turned a turbine or not ?

    The purpose of a barometer calibration is to detect atmospheric pressure perturbation resulting from a change in weather.

    Question: I got a fishing barometer. Pretty similar settings and look; metal case, etc. There are two needles: (1) the one you adjust with the screw as you were showing and (2) on the glass. What's the one on the glass for and does need any adjustment? Thanks

    • @WeemsPlathvideos
      @WeemsPlathvideos  7 лет назад +6

      All barometers have two needles. One is the indicator needle that is adjusted to the pressure with a screwdriver from behind the movement. The other is the moveable needle that is adjusted by turning a knob on the face of the barometer and should be placed over the indicator needle to mark any barometric change in pressure.

    I guess the people that make the barometers don't get along with the people that make the knobs , maybe they could call up the cogswells and stick a cog on there instead of a knob . If that doesn't work they could maybe call Spacely and put a little sprocket on there . Give em a call and ask for George . Just tell him you want to be able to calibrate your barometer without having to use a mangled letter opener .

    Pressure in forecasts etc relates to sea level, not the height you happen to be!

      If you have access to a pressure calibrator, such as a Heise PTE-2 ($1,500 or so), use that.
