Y2K was when people were afraid that all computer programs would shut down since programs were basically made to force stop when given a number over 1999. They solved it by just getting the people who made the programs to change it. There is much more to it but that the simplest way to explain :)
For Y2K, the dates on many computers only had 2 digits, which was done to save space, since in the old days even small amounts like that was a lot. It had long outgrown its space saving needs by 2000 but a lot of old systems were still using that as their date system. It was thought that rolling over to 00 would make the computers think it was 1900, which supposedly would cause all sorts of errors related to dates and save states of files.
I scarcely recall the hype around that phenomenon. Next big hype train was 2012. Technology has had quite an effect on humanity apparently. Scarcely because I was 4/5 years old around that time.
