This is easily one of Costner's best performances. And in general he is much better in roles where he is more vulnerable than in roles where he is the hero, a tough guy, or cool leader. In most of those he just comes across as pretty much the same corporate VP, but in a different wardrobe.

This movie had one of the funniest cinema occurances for me ever. When we find out that Sean Young's character in the movie sleeps with both Costner and Hackman, packed theater about 1000 people there, a guy in the balcony blurts out "What a damn hoe, this really pisses me off!" and the entire thater bursts out laughing :D

15:16 That whole "Costner in '87" debate where an unknown guy comes out in a role and then fires off...surprised they didn't mention their boy (and ours, don't get me wrong) Glen Powell.
Top Gun Maverick in 2022, which later leads to Anyone but You in December the following year, Hit Man drops on Netflix in May, and Twisters in July. 8 months. That's probably the closest we have to Costner in '87. And 3 significantly different movies like Austin there.

I feel like Out of Time, a vastly underrated Denzel film, is very much inspired, or influenced by this film. Either way love both movies, idk what to call this sub-genre of dudes involved in some business who are accused of something and who have to solve the mystery on-the-run pursued by authorities, Frantic and Fugitive obviously good examples of it.

Great point, they have a similar sort of vibe too in films, No Way Out and Officer and a Gentleman both these career jumping off points for big actors, and their respective love interests. Besides Blade Runner and No Way Out I don't really know if Sean Young was that great an actress, but Debra Winger in Officer and a Gentleman, Terms of Endearment and Shadowlands was genuinely great, especially the latter is very underrated but she's excellent in it opposite Anthony Hopkins

The score was absolutely terrible and really took me out of the movie during key scenes. Synth scores always date '80s movies but when it's Tangerine Dream during Thief it's a high level of musicianship. The "No Way Out" score felt like something the composer threw together in an afternoon.
It's a neat twist and for sure the '90s twists owe a debt to this script. I still think the Usual Suspects and Sixth Sense twists are really shocking and mindblowing and are in a different class of screenwriting than No Way Out.
I agree with Sean that the movie "Identity" has the silliest twist I can remember.
I loved all the '87 versions of ''state of the art'' technology. It made the original Mission Impossible look futuristic.

The camera work is bad, the "sea rescue" scene looks lile it was filmed in a bathtub, etc. Fortunately it gets much better once she dies...not a knock on sean young, but its an odd role. And i was 7 when this movie came out and i had no idea about the "twist"...brilliantly done...the last half hour makes up for the first half hour.
