I knew there was something, but no beginner book really explains it so detailed. I was looking forward to your new videos, and thanks a million for making them. Hearing it here, I'll force myself to learn bits of the required positions to play "Danse Macabre" it really sounds amazing on cello.
Thank you for this. I have a bad habit of locking my fingers straight while I’m playing. I just realized it’s probably because of my thumb placement. I’ll have to practice today when I get home
I’m a guitar player but I’m thinking of buying a student cello. When I play guitar I tend to hook my thumb over the top of the neck. This is a good reminder before I develop bad habits
Thank you so much!! This is very helpful! Is it correct if I use my pinky more on the external part? I can se it from the position of the callus. The marks of the cords on your fingers are in a different position.
You know your body better than anyone on this good green earth, so if you are able to create a strong, rich sound with clear resonance on that part of your little finger, then carry on!
Hello! First, thank you for all the info I have gotten from your lessons. I think I have seen most of them which is a testament to how much I value your instruction. I think I'm holding my fingers correctly, but I have a question: Do your fingers turn black from the strings when you play? I've looked and can't see any telltale smudges on yours. Mine turn a terrible black, far more than when I play bronze strings on my guitar. Am I using junky strings? They weren't very expensive. Thanks again, Ken.
@@CelloCoach Well, I have seen a guy using his left thumb while playing on 6th/7th finger placements in order to move faster. That made me wonder if it is any good.
I'm not sure if you'll see this but I'm a beginner cellist (5-6 months in, I think) and I quite literally can not shape my hand like this. I feel like its impossible! Are there any tips for this? I really want to try this exercise along with less squeaking in general but my fingers can not space out like this no matter how hard I try 😭
65 years young learning to play cello. Background is piano and classical guitar. Do you play bow tilted to side? Hands are old and this would help be hold bow easier if I could use tilted bow. You are very good teaching easy to understand. Thank You
I started playing the cello in the 4th and 5th grades then stopped after graduating since I did not own a cello at the moment. I got my cello last year. Therefore, I'm now in the 11th grade and trying to get back into playing. However, when I play, it makes a screech and a squeak and my arm now hurts whenever I bow. I can't play an open string without it sounding screechy and squeaky. Is there any advice? I love the cello and my mom just bought me it. However, I'm feeling discouraged to continue playing because of how bad it sounds and I'm thinking of just quitting and playing the drum set.
Just started playing the cello, and I have a bit of an anatomical disadvantage that I wonder if anyone has a tip for. My pinky is very short compared to my other fingers, my ring finger is a full inch longer than my pinky. Also, when I arch my fingers, my pinky curves inward to such a degree that it's almost touching my ring finger. What can I do to create the proper spacing when I have such a wildly disproportionate finger?

Can you also demonstrate how to use the left thumb on strings?
as in Thumb Position? Certainly and that will come next year.

Tilting the bow down to the ground - not the wood but the hair - which straightens your wrist a little bit. This is comfortable and proper technique.
thank you this video helped me a lot :)

Listen to the Astroworld album and pick a song to cover on it. You may use the beat , but cover the melody and vocals
Ok, to Spotify I go!
Haha yes my fingers are too fat for guitar , so that’s why I am on the cello!
Welcome!
I can't get my fingers to do this lol am I screwed I love this instrument
Help my fingers look like tirantula legs whenever I play
