    I came to this place in January 1994 from the Netherlands on a student exchange programme (UCD). No place on the campus so we were directed to this beautiful town. Stayed in a hostel for six months (The Old School House near Eblana Avenue). Had a wonderful time and so many good memories. Despite the economic crisis, the people were kind and would invite you for dinner or a drink in one of the many pubs or cultural places. Never been back but having seen this video I should go back one day. Wicklow Mountains, meeting of the waters, Glendalough, Newgrange. So many stunning places. Great video, many thanks for making it.

    That is really interesting, Dave. Dún Laoghaire is a lovely place. I've been there many times and it's one of my favourite places in Dublin, Ireland of all time. I mostly go there for every summer. I think walking on a pier is my most favourite activity in Dún Laoghaire of all time as well.
    Thank you for uploading this video and I enjoy watching it.

    I grew up in Dun Laoghaire till I was 15, I took the mailboat to Holyhead (The Cambria) and then the train to Euston station in London. I have only been back once in the 55 years that have passed since I left so this video was really special for me, to see all the places I knew as a boy was magical. So thank you Michael , The video is wonderful.

    I've noticed how unusual the Gaelic name's are spelt in comparison to the English spelling, but that the pronunciation is not often very different.
    Even the name's like Seamus and Padraig are obviously Gaelic versions of James and Patrick in English. When you say them to yourself they soon become easily understandable.

      Thank you for your compliments on the video. Though the shopping area has not recovered from the national economic 'bust' and clearly needs more vendors in its empty shops, much has been done to improve the town in recent years, especially the addition of housing, the library, and other amenities along the coast. It may be a challenge to turn the town into a vibrant shopping destination but I am optimistic that things will continue to improve. In short, I find it a wonderful place to live.

    • @fluxstandard8364
      @fluxstandard8364 5 лет назад

      David Owens that library was a disgrace, with costs in double figure millions, and badly used internal space, aka more books and desks could be provided. It is a pity that the place never recovered, additionally the council have failed to facilitate a working friendly prosperous business environment with little emphasis on care or duty. The marine front has been renovated to provide restaurants and coffee shops, but plays only as a minor distraction to mess the place is in now. It is regrettable, Dun Laoghaire is nothing as it was in the film The Snapper or indeed the late 80s-90s. It’s a pity.

    • @fluxstandard8364
      @fluxstandard8364 3 года назад

      @Dún Laoghaire Bríd Dundrum is not a monstrosity as you call it, but rather a successful project borne of the Celtic Tiger and loved by the Celtic Tiger cubs. The issue with Dun L is numerous, but mostly one to do with a lack of ability for Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Council to create incentives for any quality brands or robust business to set up. Since 2008 the rapid decline and loss of status of Dun L has compounded itself into a wasteland, comprising of an abundance of shit temporary shops, a three story shopping centre which landlords make no effort to reduce rent rates, and a far larger community which either is or knows someone who uses the methadone clinic. Additionally the irresponsible DLRC decided to place misguided effort in supporting and/or funding what I believe is a 40million euro library which fails to add value to the local economy, and additionally oversaw the revamping of lower Marine Road to the Peoples Park with flower beds and a few restaurants, again a project which overall presents low benefit to cost outcomes. It is a sad state of affairs and every DLRC politician or landlord of a business premises should ask themselves how could they have done better.
