something else to note is that typically you can step away from the side the limb attacking you is on, for example: feng df1 tracks to his left (your right) because it uses his left arm, meaning if you step to his right (your left) you can typically get around him with the right timing. while this is not true for all attacks, i find it is helpful when your opponent is pulling out moves you haven’t specifically labbed against
Majin Obama has to be the most consistently GOATED content creator, even when I don't play fighting games for long periods I NEVER MISS an Obama upload. Big ups man love all the way from Sweden
This is the video I really needed! sidestepping has been a major brain fart for me. There is too much 2D fighter on my brain rn, and I need to crush these mental blocks I keep having. Great Video 💪
Fought a really good Paul player in casual that was side stepping EVERYTHING. Thankfully I remembered King’s F4 can track and I got the win but Damn it was tough. Crazy how he could just avoid everything I did .
I know this video is hella old and you probably won’t see this, but what I like specifically about this guide is the practical use of stepping that new players can instantly implement into their game (stepping when opponent takes their turn back) Excellent guide.
This is a great foundation video, even for folks who have loved the series for over 20yrs like me. I've always been trash and only recently started to pick apart why.
Thumbnail and title wins so damn hard, they're the entire reason I clicked. Excited to learn a bit about movement. Edit: Good content. I try to do this, but sometimes just space it. Other times, I just don't block after stepping and get blown up for it. One thing I try to tell myself when I'm getting clapped by something that seems BS is that linearity is one aspect to balancing moves. So there's just not going to be a non-reactable, launching, safe, homing move. I ought to be able to beat it SOMEHOW. Sometimes it'll be reacting to a snake edge, sometimes it'll be CH/armoring through a poke and getting a launch or a trade in my favor, sometimes it'll be block punishing an Atlas Hammer, and sometimes it'll be stepping an approach tool. The thing that steams my beans though, is nailing the sidestep, but they went so far past me that I can't punish. Feels like a rip off, but I don't know how that'd be fixed. Thanks for the vid, man.
This really helps a lot. I'm trying to implement side stepping into my gameplan more often. I know what to do, but I'm missing a lot of context and training drills.
You get context from playing. You will see what is most common tools from most common ranges. Start to experiment stepping or trying to step those specific tools
That actually helped so much lol, first 3D game and while I knew that you're meant to sidestep some moves I never understood at what timings you're actually looking to sidestep something
Thank you for making videos where you talk in a way newcomers understand. A LOT of Tekken Veterans give one-line answers to any issues people might have and then act like its good advice. Its the "Git Gud" crowd all over again.
Popped in because of the thumbnail. Interested because the subject. Stayed because the amazing Nujabes Luvsic grand finale tapestry hanging on the wall. Great video.
lmao new players definitely get annoyed that their sidesteps aren't working but if sidestep just worked all the time, the new players would be annoyed that everyone is just sidestepping all their moves for free i'm really glad that sidestep is designed the way it is, as a specific answer to specific options and specific situations, that's what tekken is all about baby
So basically; special attacks that don't have tracking, you can sidestep. Attacks from one side can be dodged with a sidestep to the opposite side. I.e. left punch, right sidestep. Right kick, left sidestep. And finally, you can cancel your sidestep into all sorts of stuff
Great vid. How to implement sidesteps into your gameplan is probably the aspect that filters most 2d players when trying to get good at Tekken, specially due to how specific tracking is compared to VF or DoA. I think this explains really well how to get a good idea of its advantages and also how vital jabs are at trying to figure out the habits of your opponent.
what's cool about the chart is that it gives the general idea of what's best to side step for a character. Then if you are in a match and SSL for a character since that's what the chart says, then you get clipped by a move that tracks left.. well now you can recognize that move even easier than before. Oh okay he throws that move a lot that catches SSL.. so now I can get the read and SSR instead for those situations
Also step after you have blocked opponents plus move. They will very likely press a button as it’s ”their turn”. Works very well if opponent’s move is +1 to +5. But if they have +7 for example, then you need to respect them and block. Your step is not fast enough to evade fast pokes at that big minus frames.
"if you can master this technique, you'll be doing daamage that'll have your opponent calling for nerfs" 😂 ya damn right. I can hear Harada and Michael's phone's ringing rn! 😂
Thanks for the vid. It's my first Tekken game and I'm playing with sticks so I had trouble what exactly the input supposed to be because id always jump/crouch instead.
Great tips! Something I didn't realise for a while is when you press your hit box becomes bigger, so a lot of the time when sidestepping I would get clipped because I pressed something. Have to visually confirm the whiff to punish... 😅 It would condition me to not sidestep because I thought id get hit. Not sure why this isn't common knowledge!
The chart is just a general idea which side the character's mostly weak against..meaning most of the character's move won't track to that side.. But there will always have few exceptions.... But only few... So that chart will definitely help u...
It's really frustrating man. Not only do you have to know which move tracks to what side out of 100 moves. You also have to know which one you have to SIDEWALK instead of Sidestep since a Sidestep would still hit you. Then you got 35 characters and about 3500 moves that track differently. And to top it all off, you'll have to predict which move the opponent is gonna use in the first place. Couldn't they at least make Sidestepping and Sidewalking to one side work the same? There are single attack moves you have to Sidewalk to the Left and you still get launched when you Sidestep them and vice versa. Also, moves like Asuka's SS2 sometimes get clipped by moves that are usually sidesteppable to that respective side. It's just exceptions after exceptions after exceptions. I'm convinced that if they don't at least make information on all moves more accessible so we don't have to lab every single move the Tekken franchise will die soon. No new player has the nerve to spend that much time on labbing moves. We need frame data lists.
If i side step a move from p1 side is the correct way to side stepp the inverse input on p2 side? Or is it like you described in the beginning right is back ground and left is foreground always?
*So I hit em with the Circular motion and established wrist control*
*COLDBLOODED*
I rewatched that sketch this week and was laughing at Charlie Murphy calling Rick James 'mad N*ggerish' 😂😂💀💀💀
Seeing jab sidestep for the first time opened up another layer in my brain.
Habitual sidestepper is such a goated title.
I want one that just says Big Stepper 💪
FACTS
Alongisde PhiDX you are producing some of the best and most digestible Tekken tutorial content. I greatly appreciate what you're doing, thank you.
Hey man, I just wanted to say I really appreciate the kind words. See ya on the battlefield

thanks for watchin
I really wish you did a audio cut of Charlie Murphy "he was a side stepper man, a habitual side stepper man, i had to check him"
I appreciate the insight as to why one might sidestep, not to just try it blindly for no reason. Great video!
Glad it was helpful!
Obama actually out here tryna help the noobs while so many other people handing out scrub short-cuts like candy.
Fought a really good Paul player in casual that was side stepping EVERYTHING. Thankfully I remembered King’s F4 can track and I got the win but Damn it was tough. Crazy how he could just avoid everything I did .
"Passive tracking" is an understatement. These moves have more tracking than the homing moves
I know this video is hella old and you probably won’t see this, but what I like specifically about this guide is the practical use of stepping that new players can instantly implement into their game (stepping when opponent takes their turn back)
Excellent guide.
I see every comment. Appreciate it and glad it helped! Most tekken stuff I make is stuff I wish people would have told me when I was learning
I seen this in my recommended and I haven't even watched the video yet, but thumbs up just for the hilarious video title and thumbnail!
Not a beginner but I still watch these tutorials to send to my friends. This was the most concise sidestepping guide I've seen so far! 👍🏿
Glad it helped!
This is a great foundation video, even for folks who have loved the series for over 20yrs like me. I've always been trash and only recently started to pick apart why.
Thanks for sharing!!
very good video a lot of players ignore how impt side stepping and side walking is. we need more stuff like this

glad it could open your eyes a little! there are some other great resources on youtube on this topic! give it your best!
@@doogies update: i've been stepping some jabs and strings and getting launchers off of it :)

This was helpful, thank you! Using the plus frame to offensively sidestep was my fave tip in particular. Ty again
Glad it was helpful!
Popped in because of the thumbnail. Interested because the subject.

“here comes the side steppa, murderah!”

I like the way you explain things, good vid! This is my first Tekken, so theres so many small details I'm unaware of lol
Glad I could help!
This is the one I was waiting on. Thank you so much for these breakdowns. They're so good.
Glad you like them!
I'd love to see a follow-up vid about using sidesteps for offense, especially repositioning near the wall
Step 1 side step
step 2 punish
step 3 scream: UNITYYYYYY
Ever since T5 I used sidestep to cancel my backdash. Had no idea about KBD.
Perfect tittle. Miss ya Charlie
Cracked me with the thumbnail
Easily the best Tekken 8 Sidestep tutorial!🙏🏽 💯

The thumbnail and title have me i tears 😂. Good shit Obama, lmao. I'll be checking your guides when I get T8.

Awesome vid, really helpful and I'm sure it cleared up a bunch of questions for many players. Appreciate the info!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you very much for this video!

i adore these vids Obama, ive been hella 2d-pilled and learning tekken 8 right now. So im consuming these vids as a mfer
The title and thumbnail of this video is pure gold ✨️ 👌
Bra I subbed and I will refer others to your channel. Please continue with your work. It is much appreciated.
Thank you, I will
Brother, that reference is Hilarious!
Thanks for the vid. It's my first Tekken game and I'm playing with sticks so I had trouble what exactly the input supposed to be because id always jump/crouch instead.
So well articulated for Tekken newbies like me. Tyyyyy

this video unlocked my brain, I now see in 3D

Awesome! Thank you!
This shit post is amazing! RIP Charlie Murphy.
It's not a shitpost...
Also great music in the background!🥰
Having problems? Just 6p- err, sidestep.
another banger, thanks goat!
I’m still in 2d mode. Lmfaooo this video is for me in the long run
Thanks for the great tips!
Glad it was helpful!
Gracias por la explicacion. Hay muchas cosas del juego que no se explican en los tutoriales.
that man got too familiar, and I had to whip his ass. this is great stuff dude nice work
I'm finally making a real effort in getting used to the 3D aspect of this 3D game.
If a move is +7, hits mid, has a shitton of range, has evasive properties, and does high damage? Definitely a steppable move right there
The chart is just a general idea which side the character's mostly weak against..meaning most of the character's move won't track to that side.. But there will always have few exceptions.... But only few... So that chart will definitely help u...
OK lol
I had to click when I saw Charlie Murphy🕊️ on the thumbnail 😂 good vid bro 👊🏾
Nice content
Thumbnail game unmatched
Best tutorial man!!!! Now I get it!!
Its crazy how Obama's mic is finally in front of his mouth after all these years.
Rick James is gonna be the next DLC get ready. UNITY!!!!
This will help my Nina game, thanks!
Habitual, that’s a great word
In combat your opponent will not telegraph the linear attack by jabbing first.
Like you said, the problem is when to sidestep
This all coulda been summed up by a little, "Hey so ughhh, when he tries to do the thing? You gotta move outta the way.."
It's really frustrating man. Not only do you have to know which move tracks to what side out of 100 moves. You also have to know which one you have to SIDEWALK instead of Sidestep since a Sidestep would still hit you. Then you got 35 characters and about 3500 moves that track differently. Had to watch just for the Chappelle show reference
Very well explained. You should be a teacher. Oh wait-
Hit em with the lateral movement #majinoshuffle
These videos are great! I just got to Dominator with Jin & thanks to your other video I now know how to get up 😂 you’re the fucking man!!
And here i am sidestepping and ended up getting launched. Missing something 😂😂
Great video bro
Thanks for the visit
Great stuff!
Obama aint fuckin around with y’all this season.
Im a noob. So basically instead of block-punishing my opponent, i could sidestep and get a better punish?
Yes.
If i side step a move from p1 side is the correct way to side stepp the inverse input on p2 side? Or is it like you described in the beginning right is back ground and left is foreground always?
inverse. its why stuff like SSL duck on P1 side and SSR duck on P2 side can be hard
@@doogies thank you thank you ill be sure to lab both sides so muscle memory doesn't catch me lacking
The title and the content I had to subscribe 🫡
Damn that thumbnail is godlike XD
majin is the best teacher 🔥🔥🧡🧡
Just fyi, the first two points made in the video are assuming your character is facing right.💯
You are correct lol
Good video, thanks for post 👌🏽
Thanks for watching!
This thumbnail made me laugh👍
