I'm not proud of this but I have to share. I couldn't figure out why my Scarlett Solo wasn't picking up my mic. I spent almost 2 hours re-installing Focusrite and reading anything I could find on the internet to fix the problem. I found this video and in less than 2 minutes you solved my problem! Stupid 48v button. Yeah... I didn't turn it on and I feel pretty dumb about it, but I cant thank you enough for saving me from a near nervous breakdown.
Nothing at all to be ashamed of Alana! I had the exact same issue. I found this video and figured out I needed to use phantom power and turn up the gain. Issue solved!!!!
I haven't been turning it off when I unplug the mic, and I just did it today. I bet my mistake's a lot more costly than yours! I had no idea that what used to be in owners manuals required you to start an account, register the device, and listen to tutorials. I may have messed my mic and/or the interface up. I'm here after 5 months because stuff doesn't sound right.
Thanks for this video. I believe have a focusrite solo (mic + 1/4" inputs). Mic is all plugged in, I can see signal (flashes of green when making sound near the mic, and I have the phantom power turned on, with "air" triggered). But, my guitar signal is not getting any "hits" when I strum, turn up the gain all the way (there is no flash of green except for when I plug the 1/4" cable in and out). I am using an acoustic guitar with a 9volt battery pickup, which I checked has a fully charged 9volt--that also created a flash of light when I pulled the battery in and out to check it's charge-so it seems as though the Scarlett can sense there is a guitar there. I'd love to record vocals plus guitar just as the next tutorial video demonstrates. But, at this point I am recording just vocals with my guitar "in the background" on the first / input 1 audio track. I used Focusrite Control to switch my input settings for Analogue 2 to "INST," have the "INST" button switched on for input 2 on the Scarlett, made sure within Garageband that track 1 is synced with input 1 and track 2 is synced with input 2, etc. I am totally stumped. Any help would be great.

Yes, if you are running your bass guitar directly to the Scarlett (with no amplifier), then you will use Instrument mode. For reference, 4:14 has a good breakdown of line vs inst mode.

You guys should work with Amp Sim designers to make everything run smooth cos it is really a pain to set everythin correctly, single coils, low noise, passive humbuckers, ultra satured signal, if use INST button it almost sounds digital. The condenser mic that I have came with an XLR to a 3.5mm Jack. I have an adapter that turns the 3.5 into a 6.5 for that spot you plug the guitar into in this video. I can’t seem to get it to work - does the microphone HAVE to run through the XLR for it to function, or is there something else I’m missing?
Afraid XLR to 3.5mm jack cables aren't compatible. Microphones need to be connected via XLR for the signal to pass through the mic preamp and for the mic to receive phantom power. The 1/4" input is designed to receive instrument level signals, such as guitars, only.
Hi can I ask is there a way of separately turning up or down your mic when you are recording with music? I feel like I don't get enough volume through my headphones coming from my mic? I don't want to trouble the gain as it's green and in a good place, it's more the volume of the mic output that I hear through my headphones that I would like to be able to turn up? Hi Nia, which interface are you using? If using a 4i4 or larger interface, you can control the volumes of individual channels in custom mixes. If using a Solo or 2i2, turn down the backing track from the DAW to better monitor your inputs
MY NOTES: 1. Before connecting microphone to interface, 48V button must be off. 2. Once microphone is plugged in, then turn on 48V. 3. Before disconnecting microphone, turn OFF 48V. Air mode: adds mid to high frequency boos which sounds good for vocals. Direct Monitor ON: to hear microphone in headphones without delay.
Hey, I have plugged in my Keyboard with two TRS calbles on the back of the interface, but when I play the keyboard I dont heat anything. Am I doing something wrong? Pleaso help😰
Hey Lena, which interface are you using? If using a 4i4 for example, open Focusrite Control and add the inputs 3-4 to your custom mix. Come to tech support if you need more detailed assistance.
the back is the output, you gotta plug it in the front and press direct monitor and listen through the headphone jack. you only need one cable as input
Hi Rudy, while we don't recommend 'hot plugging' i.e changing plugs with +48v on, you don't need to worry if this is turned on accidentally. Only products that require it (condenser mics for example) will draw the power via the XLR connection.
Hi, thanks a lot for the video ! However, I still can't figure out how to plug my microphone. I've plugged the XLR and pushed the 48V button, and then, when turning the gain joystick, the rings doesn't light up... Do you have any idea where the problem might be ? I've followed the tutorial by focusrite until now, and it's been more than 2 hours... So you know, I'm using the scarlett Solo with a NT1-A Rode Microphone, if it is of any help. I should add that rings appears when pressing 48V and then disappear rapidly. Maybe I haven't understand how it is suppose to work... Should I be able to hear the sound right away (if I have headphones plugged in) ?
Hi, the gain halo will only illuminate when a signal is detected by the microphone. You can double check if the microphone is capturing by pressing the "Direct Monitor" and seeing if you can hear your voice or the instrument you are recording.
My headphone doesn't fit in the headphone jack, so I can't use ASIO driver on Ableton. My headphone's jack's too small. Is there a work around to using MME/DirectX, or must I really find a headphone that can fit into Scarlett's headphone jack?
You should be able to purchase an adapter for your headphones. It will likely be a 3.5mm to 1/4" jack adapter (but it depends on which headphones you have).

So I have a similar issue but mine is that my mic needed an adapter to fit my Scarlett solo. I'm also using a belton and my mic is not showing any power from the Scarlett is being received. I don't want to buy another mic since I've already purchased a mic and adapters for it. Do you know if their somewhere in the settings of my Scarlett where I can turn the mic on for power?
Can you provide some guidance around connecting a yamaha keyboard into a scarlett solo 4th gen. I am unable to hear the keyboard through my headphones even though direct monitoring is turned on.
If you are connecting the keyboard via quarter-inch cable to your Scarlett, you need to make sure INST is selected for that input, and that the gain knob is raised high enough to see signal coming in on the gain halo. Once that is happening you should be able to hear the single coming through direct monitoring. Depending on your interface you may be able to adjust levels on Focusrite Control as well. Hey great series of videos! I have a mixer with four XLR inputs. I plan to send the signal from this mixer to the line input on the scarlett solo. Would that work? Shall I keep the INST button on while doing this? Thanks!
Absolutely. There's certainly no reason why that shouldn't work although this will only allow you to capture a mono signal from the mixer. The inputs on all of our audio interfaces are mono. If you're mixer outputs instrument level, the INST setting should provide a suitable gain range.
Hello! Thank you for the video. I have two questions. First, I always plug in my eletric guitar first and after that press the INST button. When I finish recording, I turn off INST (so it becomes LINE mode) and after that unplug the guitar jack. Is it fine to do like this? Or is it better to switch on INST first and plug the guitar after? Or maybe it does not matter? And the second one, is it ok to keep the microphone input always plugged in? I want to reduce the risk of damaging my Focusrite accidentally.
Scarlett devices and instruments connected can be removed at any time without damaging the interface itself, and leaving a microphone connected will not cause any damage either. We do recommend any connected powered monitors be the last thing switched on and the first thing switched off to avoid any surges damaging the speakers. And it is good to turn Phantom power off before disconnecting a condenser microphone, which should be disconnected when not in use to avoid damage to the microphone. Otherwise, any other practices should not cause any damage to the Interface.

Hi, thank you for reaching out. Unfortunately, there is no way to connect a USB microphone to a Scarlett unless it also features an XLR output. USB microphones do not require an audio interface they can be plugged straight into your computer. Please let us know I this helps or if we can answer additional questions.
can i use an XLR cable from my guitar amp (for EQ purposes) to the scarlett solo XLR input? or is it for mic use only? will it damage the interface? thanks a lot!!
Would like to know this as well from someone who's experienced. I *think* what you want is an XLR to TRS cable. Plug the XLR end into your amp, and the TRS end into Input 2 (don't hit the "INST" button - leave that off). This is because if your amp is like mine, then the XLR outputs on your amp are line level signals, as opposed to mic or inst level signals. Input 2 receives line level signals by default.
In theory, that's already possible with Scarlett Solo, although it's not an ideal choice. The mono 1/4" input is primarily designed for instrument-level signals, such as guitars, but you could also connect the output from an mp3 player. This would allow you to practice and record your karaoke performances in software, with the microphone signal and the audio from the mp3 player routed to separate mono audio tracks in software.
Please help, im using a V-moda Boompro mic, its both a mic and aux cable that plugs into your headphones existing 3.5mm port. Its got two plugs for pc, one for the headphone jack and one for the mic jack. I wanted to use it with my Focusrite scarlett so i ordered an xlr adapter however im not getting signal.
Hi there. Our interfaces are designed to be used with standard dynamic/condenser/ribbon microphones that connect using XLR cables. These have very different power requirements than headset microphones such as the V-MODA BoomPro. While we have some reports of headset mics working with Scarletts, we cannot guarantee that they will be compatible. More info here: bit.ly/3rv2WJ1
While it will record, the TRS jack is set to record at instrument or line level, therefore a microphone plugged in may result in a very low-level recording.
Can you plug a second guitar output into the XLR input using an adaptor? I.e I have a 2 output electric guitar.... - one output is a piezo going into an external fishman preamp (it has an XLR output as well as standard cable output) -And the second is for the magnetic pickups..... I want to use my DAW to record both simultaneously so I can reamp and blend them....and also 'jam' silently etc (Rather than mic my physical guitar amp with my sm57 as it limits the tone options and plugging the piezo into the instrument channel which I'm doing now) Would using either the adaptor or XLR output from the fishman preamp work with this? I'm just worried if I plugged into the scarlet via an adaptor or XLR cable from the fishman it would damge it/both units as its 'meant for mics'
Mic and instrument level signals are not dangerously different, so while not ideal you can plug a guitar into the XLR port using an adapter without damaging either device. You will likely have to turn the gain down lower than the usual mic level, as the instrument level created by a guitar is higher than what a microphone typically creates. The XLR output from your Fishman is likely line level, this can also be accepted by the XLR port just be careful the signal isn't clipping on the Focusrite when played. Please let us know if this helps or if you have additional questions.
Does the "INST" button on the 6.35 mm plug actually change between mic level input and line level input? If so, will electret microphones that typically need 5-7 V bias voltage work with this input when INST is illuminated?
Bias voltage can't be substituted with other kinds of signal levels. It also depends on whether your electret mic has a built-in JFET or separate conductors for bias and for audio. We would recommend sticking to XLR mics for use with the Scarlett Solo.

After researching this more, I found out that you have to get Røde VXLR Pro or Røde VXLR+ (note that Røde VXLR is not good!) adapter for electret microphones or they will not be compatible with Scarlett Solo. The more expensive Pro version should be used if you need a long cable run between the mic and the audio interface because that one actually outputs balanced signal which can cope with interference better.
Can I plug in a microphone with a 6.35 mm jack into the instrument input? I have 2 microphone cables and both have jacks not XLR connectors. Also would I use the inst button or not for a microphone?
Hey Lesley, yes you can plug that in; it will likely be a bit quieter than an XLR in, so using INST would most probably give you best performance depending on how you're using it

I missing a cable.. as i am unable to connect my headphones to my Solo, can i direct the output of the Solo to the output of my mac and evetnually out my bluetooth headphones?
like in the monitor? it never sounds the same on any of my interfaces through the monitor, but it sounds fine when i record. Scarletts are also very cold sounding, they take away the warmth, so your sound will be like cool or machine-y or like, brighter in the high, the words to describe sounds are weird. Hi.. I am trying to use it with with Windows 10 but my mic inputs are not responding. I have tried everything. "*No jack information available" is written in the the properties whereas the Output jack information is available and written as "Quarter Inch Jack" and the output is working well ( headphone monitoring jack). Please suggest what to do as the system is not recognising input jacks. I guess there is a shortcoming in the driver

Each individual input is a mono input. For example, input 3 is a mono input, but you can plug a stereo device into 3+4, and use them both on one stereo track in your DAW. Your digital piano likely outputs line level signal, but your microphone will need to be plugged into one of the microphone inputs, unless you have an external preamp that outputs line level signal. Hi, I am facing issue with the line input in Scarlett solo. So whenever I join Google meet, with my mic and amp connected got the Scarlett Solo, other people in the meeting can't hear my guitar but can hear my voice via mic. I am yet to find a solution to fix this issue. Can someone please help?
Sorry to hear that you've had problems with that. Google Meet should certainly be able to receive the signal from both inputs 1 and 2 simultaneously when selected as the audio input/output device. Is this issue isolated to Google Meet? Are you able to capture the signal from the mic in other applications, such as Ableton Live Lite? If you're working with a condenser mic, is phantom power engaged?
The 1/4" input can be primed to receive either Line level or Instrument level signals. The instrument level option works well for acoustic instruments fitted with a pick-up. For electric guitars, particularly those with humbuckers and other high output pickups or with pedals in the signal chain, the Line-level option would be a good level match.
That's not something we have officially tested but it certainly appears to be compatible. The product website states that it requires Phantom Power. Scarlett can provide that. sterlingaudio.net/sterling-st159-multi-pattern-condenser-microphone/
Hi there, if your keyboard has audio outputs, then yes you can connect this to the Scarlett inputs 1/4in jacks. If you're using a device which is exclusively a MIDI controller, these can usually be plugged straight into the Mac/PC via USB.
If you are connecting via audio output, you can connect a cable from the output of your keyboard to the 1/4-inch instrument input on Scarlett Solo. If there are stereo outputs on your keyboard, then you will not be able to connect both inputs to the Scarlett, and you should see if one is specified as a mono output. If you are referring to a USB Midi keyboard, this can be connected to your Computer via USB, no interface required. Please let us know if this helps or if you have additional questions.

On Scarlett Solo, the first input can only accept XLR cables, and mic level inputs. Therefore if you wanted a guitar to go into the mic input we would recommend you use a DI box.
Hi, I have a digital piano that has only headphones output and I use midi vst for recording but the results are not that good.. So would it be better if I recorded the actual sound of the piano in mono with the scarlett solo? .. Please help me because I've been struggling with bad quality recording for so long and I can't find the answer any where.

I'm currently not using the audio output to record because when I connect it to my computer built in microphone the quality is just horrible, so I use the midi output instead and connect it to my computer and I record using a free piano vst in my daw but I don't really like the sound of it I think it's not as good as the actual piano sound of my digital piano.. so my question is would the audio recorded with the scarlett solo be better than a piano vst? And also would it be possible to connect the piano to a scarlett 2i2 with only one audio output? Sorry for taking your time.
No need to apologise! We're here to assist with questions like this. Scarlett Solo can certainly be used to accurately capture the sound of instruments and line-level sources on a Mac, Windows PC or USB-C iPad. In theory, connecting the headphone output from your piano to Scarlett's instrument input via a single TRS cable, will work and allow you to route the signal into a mono audio track in software. Whether this will sound better than the plug-ins that you have been working with is subjective, but if you prefer the sound of your piano, you may find that it works well for you. If your piano features stereo effects, such as reverb and you would like to capture that, you may want to consider Scarlett 2i2 instead as this will allow you to capture the stereo signal from your piano.
Hey focusrite! I just bought scarlet solo and a rode nt1a but when I plug in the mic, turn on the phantom power then turn up the gain. It's should green light for like 3 seconds then it doesn't glow and I am getting no singnalsss ;-; PLS HELP ME OUT

Hi can you please help me? So, I am trying to record my guitar while singing at the same time. And when I went to play the whole audio, I can hear the guitar BUT it’s because my Condenser microphone recorded it and not through the guitar amp analogue #2. So I did a couple of tests, and I know that when your guitar is connected to the audio interface, the Gain 2 button should light up green everytime you strum your guitar. But it’s not lighting up. Please, how can I record my guitar? I dont know what Im doing wrong :(
Hi John, if the gain halo is not lighting up in response to your guitar input, first check the cable and ascertain the guitar itself is outputting signal (check battery on electro-acoustics). When engaged, Direct Monitoring takes the input signal and sends it straight to the headphone and line outputs but there may be circumstances where you want to monitor the processed signal.

I recently got a Scarlett Solo interface with a Rode NT1A condenser microphone. Whenever I turn my pc off, I usually leave phantom power on, and when I restart my PC or turn it on after shutting it down night before, my gain indicator flashes yellow to occasionally red as if it's clipping. Should I turn phantom power off before shutting down or restarting my pc, and turn it on again after my PC has fully booted up?
It most likely will not hurt to have 48V on whenever you are using the device (as long as you're not using ribbon mics), but best practice would be to turn 48V off when it is not in use. Bri // Focusrite US 🇺🇸

The condenser mic that I have came with an XLR to a 3.5mm Jack. I have an adapter that turns the 3.5 into a 6.5 for that spot you plug the guitar into in this video.
I can’t seem to get it to work - does the microphone HAVE to run through the XLR for it to function, or is there something else I’m missing?
Afraid XLR to 3.5mm jack cables aren't compatible. Microphones need to be connected via XLR for the signal to pass through the mic preamp and for the mic to receive phantom power.
The 1/4" input is designed to receive instrument level signals, such as guitars, only.
The "power outlet" analogy doesn't really land very well in the States, we don't have power switches on our outlets. you just plug it in and it works.

Hi Nia, which interface are you using? If using a 4i4 or larger interface, you can control the volumes of individual channels in custom mixes. If using a Solo or 2i2, turn down the backing track from the DAW to better monitor your inputs

the back is the output, you gotta plug it in the front and press direct monitor and listen through the headphone jack. you only need one cable as input

Hi Rudy, while we don't recommend 'hot plugging' i.e changing plugs with +48v on, you don't need to worry if this is turned on accidentally. Only products that require it (condenser mics for example) will draw the power via the XLR connection.

Hi, the gain halo will only illuminate when a signal is detected by the microphone. You can double check if the microphone is capturing by pressing the "Direct Monitor" and seeing if you can hear your voice or the instrument you are recording.
My headphone doesn't fit in the headphone jack, so I can't use ASIO driver on Ableton. My headphone's jack's too small. Is there a work around to using MME/DirectX, or must I really find a headphone that can fit into Scarlett's headphone jack?
You should be able to purchase an adapter for your headphones. It will likely be a 3.5mm to 1/4" jack adapter (but it depends on which headphones you have).

So I have a similar issue but mine is that my mic needed an adapter to fit my Scarlett solo. I'm also using a belton and my mic is not showing any power from the Scarlett is being received. Can you provide some guidance around connecting a yamaha keyboard into a scarlett solo 4th gen. I am unable to hear the keyboard through my headphones even though direct monitoring is turned on.
If you are connecting the keyboard via quarter-inch cable to your Scarlett, you need to make sure INST is selected for that input, and that the gain knob is raised high enough to see signal coming in on the gain halo. Once that is happening you should be able to hear the single coming through direct monitoring. Depending on your interface you may be able to adjust levels on Focusrite Control as well. Please let us know if this helps or if we can answer additional questions.
That 48v phantom power button is a design flaw and liability. It should be a switch that can't be easily engaged.

Absolutely. There's certainly no reason why that shouldn't work although this will only allow you to capture a mono signal from the mixer. The inputs on all of our audio interfaces are mono. If you're mixer outputs instrument level, the INST setting should provide a suitable gain range.

Hello! Thank you for the video. I have two questions. First, I always plug in my eletric guitar first and after that press the INST button. When I finish recording, I turn off INST (so it becomes LINE mode) and after that unplug the guitar jack. Is it fine to do like this? Or is it better to switch on INST first and plug the guitar after? Or maybe it does not matter? And the second one, is it ok to keep the microphone input always plugged in? I want to reduce the risk of damaging my Focusrite accidentally.
Scarlett devices and instruments connected can be removed at any time without damaging the interface itself, and leaving a microphone connected will not cause any damage either. We do recommend any connected powered monitors be the last thing switched on and the first thing switched off to avoid any surges damaging the speakers. And it is good to turn Phantom power off before disconnecting a condenser microphone, which should be disconnected when not in use to avoid damage to the microphone. Otherwise, any other practices should not cause any damage to the Interface.

Hi Aldon, on the 2i2 the AIR EQ preset is available on both inputs, whereas on the Solo it can only be applied to the mic input (channel 1)

Hi, thank you for reaching out. Unfortunately, there is no way to connect a USB microphone to a Scarlett unless it also features an XLR output. I *think* what you want is an XLR to TRS cable. Plug the XLR end into your amp, and the TRS end into Input 2 (don't hit the "INST" button - leave that off). This is because if your amp is like mine, then the XLR outputs on your amp are line level signals, as opposed to mic or inst level signals. Input 2 receives line level signals by default.

Yes, that should work well. Unity gain on the Scarlett Solo is between the 11 and 12 o'clock positions.

In theory, that's already possible with Scarlett Solo, although it's not an ideal choice. The mono 1/4" input is primarily designed for instrument-level signals, such as guitars, but you could also connect the output from an mp3 player. This would allow you to practice and record your karaoke performances in software, with the microphone signal and the audio from the mp3 player routed to separate mono audio tracks in software.
Please help, im using a V-moda Boompro mic, its both a mic and aux cable that plugs into your headphones existing 3.5mm port. Its got two plugs for pc, one for the headphone jack and one for the mic jack. I wanted to use it with my Focusrite scarlett so i ordered an xlr adapter however im not getting signal.
Hi there. Our interfaces are designed to be used with standard dynamic/condenser/ribbon microphones that connect using XLR cables. These have very different power requirements than headset microphones such as the V-MODA BoomPro. While we have some reports of headset mics working with Scarletts, we cannot guarantee that they will be compatible.

While it will record, the TRS jack is set to record at instrument or line level, therefore a microphone plugged in may result in a very low-level recording.
Can you plug a second guitar output into the XLR input using an adaptor? I.e

- one output is a piezo going into an external fishman preamp (it has an XLR output as well as standard cable output)

Mic and instrument level signals are not dangerously different, so while not ideal you can plug a guitar into the XLR port using an adapter without damaging either device. You will likely have to turn the gain down lower than the usual mic level, as the instrument level created by a guitar is higher than what a microphone typically creates. The XLR output from your Fishman is likely line level, this can also be accepted by the XLR port just be careful the signal isn't clipping on the Focusrite when played. If so, will electret microphones that typically need 5-7 V bias voltage work with this input when INST is illuminated?
Bias voltage can't be substituted with other kinds of signal levels. It also depends on whether your electret mic has a built-in JFET or separate conductors for bias and for audio. We would recommend sticking to XLR mics for use with the Scarlett Solo.

After researching this more, I found out that you have to get Røde VXLR Pro or Røde VXLR+ (note that Røde VXLR is not good!) adapter for electret microphones or they will not be compatible with Scarlett Solo. The more expensive Pro version should be used if you need a long cable run between the mic and the audio interface because that one actually outputs balanced signal which can cope with interference better.

Absolutely! Scarlett Solo is primarily designed to recording electric guitar and vocals. You should find that it serves you well.

like in the monitor? it never sounds the same on any of my interfaces through the monitor, but it sounds fine when i record. Scarletts are also very cold sounding, they take away the warmth, so your sound will be like cool or machine-y or like, brighter in the high, the words to describe sounds are weird. Hi.. I am trying to use it with with Windows 10 but my mic inputs are not responding. I have tried everything. "*No jack information available" is written in the the properties whereas the Output jack information is available and written as "Quarter Inch Jack" and the output is working well ( headphone monitoring jack). Each individual input is a mono input. For example, input 3 is a mono input, but you can plug a stereo device into 3+4, and use them both on one stereo track in your DAW. Your digital piano likely outputs line level signal, but your microphone will need to be plugged into one of the microphone inputs, unless you have an external preamp that outputs line level signal. Hi, I am facing issue with the line input in Scarlett solo. So whenever I join Google meet, with my mic and amp connected got the Scarlett Solo, other people in the meeting can't hear my guitar but can hear my voice via mic. I am yet to find a solution to fix this issue. Can someone please help?
Sorry to hear that you've had problems with that. Google Meet should certainly be able to receive the signal from both inputs 1 and 2 simultaneously when selected as the audio input/output device. Is this issue isolated to Google Meet? Are you able to capture the signal from the mic in other applications, such as Ableton Live Lite? If you're working with a condenser mic, is phantom power engaged?

The 1/4" input can be primed to receive either Line level or Instrument level signals. The instrument level option works well for acoustic instruments fitted with a pick-up. For electric guitars, particularly those with humbuckers and other high output pickups or with pedals in the signal chain, the Line-level option would be a good level match.
Does the Sterling audio ST159 condenser Microphone work on this with phantom power or none?
That's not something we have officially tested but it certainly appears to be compatible. The product website states that it requires Phantom Power. Scarlett can provide that.

If you are connecting via audio output, you can connect a cable from the output of your keyboard to the 1/4-inch instrument input on Scarlett Solo. If there are stereo outputs on your keyboard, then you will not be able to connect both inputs to the Scarlett, and you should see if one is specified as a mono output. On Scarlett Solo, the first input can only accept XLR cables, and mic level inputs. Therefore if you wanted a guitar to go into the mic input we would recommend you use a DI box.

Hi, I have a digital piano that has only headphones output and I use midi vst for recording but the results are not that good.. So would it be better if I recorded the actual sound of the piano in mono with the scarlett solo? .. I'm currently not using the audio output to record because when I connect it to my computer built in microphone the quality is just horrible, so I use the midi output instead and connect it to my computer and I record using a free piano vst in my daw but I don't really like the sound of it I think it's not as good as the actual piano sound of my digital piano.. so my question is would the audio recorded with the scarlett solo be better than a piano vst? And also would it be possible to connect the piano to a scarlett 2i2 with only one audio output? Sorry for taking your time.

Scarlett Solo can certainly be used to accurately capture the sound of instruments and line-level sources on a Mac, Windows PC or USB-C iPad. In theory, connecting the headphone output from your piano to Scarlett's instrument input via a single TRS cable, will work and allow you to route the signal into a mono audio track in software. Whether this will sound better than the plug-ins that you have been working with is subjective, but if you prefer the sound of your piano, you may find that it works well for you.
If your piano features stereo effects, such as reverb and you would like to capture that, you may want to consider Scarlett 2i2 instead as this will allow you to capture the stereo signal from your piano.

Hi can you please help me? So, I am trying to record my guitar while singing at the same time. And when I went to play the whole audio, I can hear the guitar BUT it’s because my Condenser microphone recorded it and not through the guitar amp analogue #2. So I did a couple of tests, and I know that when your guitar is connected to the audio interface, the Gain 2 button should light up green everytime you strum your guitar. But it’s not lighting up. Please, how can I record my guitar? I dont know what Im doing wrong :(
Hi John, if the gain halo is not lighting up in response to your guitar input, first check the cable and ascertain the guitar itself is outputting signal (check battery on electro-acoustics). im confused about the direct monitoring option. why would you or at what circumstance that you want to turn that off?
When engaged, Direct Monitoring takes the input signal and sends it straight to the headphone and line outputs but there may be circumstances where you want to monitor the processed signal.

I recently got a Scarlett Solo interface with a Rode NT1A condenser microphone. Whenever I turn my pc off, I usually leave phantom power on, and when I restart my PC or turn it on after shutting it down night before, my gain indicator flashes yellow to occasionally red as if it's clipping. Should I turn phantom power off before shutting down or restarting my pc, and turn it on again after my PC has fully booted up?
It most likely will not hurt to have 48V on whenever you are using the device (as long as you're not using ribbon mics), but best practice would be to turn 48V off when it is not in use.
