I think he mentioned it at one part but by attractiveness, strength, athletic ability etc. Though honestly I'm myself a bit confused about it, I think a status would be a combination of all things, a rich, stupid guy, would rank lower than a rich smart guy, or a smart guy that's attractive and strong would rank higher than a guy that's just smart and attractive, so maybe a courageous guy would also rank higher than a cowardly guy
@@greitasopelis5542 i kinda think that those things that are different increase a persons ability to become successful. like if you believe the right things or are competent or are just born in a good situation. Which seems to prevent a singular right way of thinking and that seems good. I also agree that a person seems better if they have more than one good quality.
Douglas Murray's criticism of JP's idea of hierarchies is spot on - what hierarchy? There are an infinite number of potential hierarchies. And one tribe's alpha is another tribe's most reviled man on the planet. Love JP, but I think his ideas here have some serious cracks in them.
One major flaw: Having different skills is different than inequality; having no skills. If technology allows us all to be genuises, creatives, strong, etc. we will take it. And it's probably gonna happen within 100 years or so. We will still find other ways to be unique. But we will, overall, level up. And that's a good thing.
Blessings brother I love your lectures... the social hierarcy can be displayed in scales look at the mexican prisión and compare that to the us there are more similaritys both economicly and socially... we can be kind and equal to each of us... but they are not... the people just act like animals. What's stupid is blindly following others based upon status. It should be who knows best about the thing at hand leads, and who knows less well voluntarily follows. I'd be willing to be subordinate to anybody if I thought that they knew better than me.
You are taking the perspective of Plato, the submission to intelligence over any other...which I agree with. But the problem with this and I think you know it, is the ego of a person. Humans, while some of them can accommodate their capabilities, but others and that is the majority, cannot and will not comply with the reality of their mental capabilities, that's why we have mass dunning-kruger in our society, and we got people that would deceit and hurt to reach what they personally believe is their deserved achievement, while still in denial of it and talk crap about ethics and idealist personal characteristics...What Peterson's perception creates is a society built upon status like you said, and the modern american society is the great manifestation of liberal system based on status. Hollywood is the primary example, for people love them for their characters and personalities, but in reality behind the cameras hollywood is built on the nature of corruption. Hierarchical society based on intelligence and each own skills that fit to the perfect opportunity is the best system but I am afraid it is an idealist perspective
@@MM-KunstUndWahrheit Even dumb people can lead if they know best but they probably usually wouldn't. Anyway, I would say that it is possible to create such a society if the idea becomes popular and anyone who tries to make anyone else their bitch for no reason is mercilessly shamed for it as a result. That is what I am trying to introduce in my book based on this concept, wherein most people are ethically perfect through programming themselves to be according to personality type. By using the mbti system. That's what I did. I'm an ENTP type by the way. They don't have to be PERFECT per se, but at least the ethical/moral bit of their minds have to be perfect for such an idea to work.

I for one exploit the dominance hierarchy! Thanks for Mr. Peterson I became more aware of it in society. This is a brilliant explanation of it and his book is probably the best book I’ve ever read.
The funny part about hierarhies is that those who value the hierarchy most is that once they get to their desired level on that hierarchy after they settle in there are going to get painfully bored. So bored that they cannot understand why their accomplishments when they get there does not feel like the ecstasy they thought it was going to be as promised to them. At that point they can start to mentor others for better satisfaction for themselves too - Unless of course they have been all along setting terrible examples on how to achieve success while on their way up.
I teach high school currently in California where schools have been shut down for some time. Students seem to have lost all motivation to do work. Students that normally get straight A's are failing and so on. It is weird that grades seem to have no effect on many students motivation during this distance learning. Do you think it is correct to hypothesize this is because something about not being physically in school has abstracted their hierarchies? They also all seem to be quite depressed as well. If I wanted to get them back on track would it be useful to , in some way, help them understand the hierarchies they were operating within still exist?
@Willow does Sapolsky ever state why baboon societies are normally structured the way they are? Why do you think they are? What % are structured this way? 99%+?
@Willow presumably it would be that they're the ones that survive. That other structures get taken over by that type of society. Not an endorsement. Just a reality. Gotta consider this little thing called game theory. Try studying how things actually work. Not how you want them to. That's actual science.
@Willow I'm pretty sure I did. I don't think you understand reality. But feel free to explain what I didn't understand. Or you can just take the coward's move again, and not say anything.
Coming from someone who went from a 5.0 GPA, to a little less because of covid... Somewhat. It definitely helps that we want the incentive for status. However, it's the collective momentum that we posses. The community - the "what we're collectively doing". And that underlying collective mentality sets up the action of 'doing the work' as something normal - making it something subconsciously automatics that we don't have to think about consciously doing and by extension not consciously conjuring up willpower to do it. When we are removed from the environment, that underlying subconscious expectation is gone, making the action of doing homework SOMETHING we have to actually think about doing. Before in our community we didn't think about doing it, but now that we're removed from our environment it's actually become SOMETHING. Additionally, that something requires effort, and since we're deprived from our community - just lilke war because the soldiers to your right and left charging towards the battlefield inspire you and keep you moving forward - you too lose momentum as well. But yeah, to not invalidate your position, the status position is an incentive as well, but a slight touch. Thank you for reading.

I don't mind that some have a bit more than I do, but when the economic system ends up with the inequality we see today 1 percent own over half the worlds wealth that is not a natural hierarchy.
Many of them poor ppl are addicts but not all of them some need a chance to recover and stand on their feet Even addicts need help to stop thier addiction and fix their life We are not animals at least by now we shouldn't be we can help each other out financially and emotionally to overcome their problems and then they will not be as much poor ppl and criminals in the world We Don't Need Hierarchy.
Metaphysical Hierarchy: Mystic... beautiful dreaming Magical...harmony Musical... language of music Artistic... pictures/metaphors Poetic... language of words Numerical...we are here Mystics create the most joy (smart). Accountants create the least joy (ignorant). Yet accountants rule the world. We live in an inside out, upside down world. The clever coyote (greed) is always trying to catch the roadrunner (love). Yet when it comes to leadership: even “divine appointed” leadership there is a tedious accountability and responsibility. Even the high priests had to tie a rope around their waist upon entering thee holy throne room of God, in case they were judged unworthy and dropped dead. God is not a respecter of people. God is thee ultimate leveler. Hannah’s Prayer is very good perspective on what humans deem valuable and what God sustains and sees valuable. The arrogant are leveled and broken. The humble and meek are lifted up. Status just gets sold for parts 😉
US Constitution: We are all equal (except foreigners; they're aliens) JP: We are NOT all equal! And thank God for that... Parents are in charge of their kids, bosses at work ARE in charge of their staff. Hierarchy is really, really desirable.
Then education should be equally accessible to everyone, so that everyone has the same opportunity. And equal access to healthcare. And housing. So that the best people naturally rise to the top. Pure meritocracy. Isn't that what you want?
People that know finances love poor people.. they profit off of charitable contrib y tions in any form.. But other than this hit home.. and this can very well be very much complicated..
Reflection as Liberation from Hierarchical and Semantic Control --- 1. Language: Sword and Mirror Words are not innocent. Behind every syllable lies intent-a weapon, a lever moving the pillars of power. Language, once a natural flow of meaning, has been tamed, bent like a river nourishing the castle of domination. A prime example of this artifice is the word "hierarchy." "Hier"-the sacred-was raised as an altar where power kneels only to legitimize its own supremacy. Thus, the word became a sword: it severed the unity of the Aeon, divided time into controllable slices, and shattered existence into masculinities that govern and femininities that obey. Hermes, thrice-great, delved into the depths of mystery. He proclaimed gender as the creative principle and the mind as the origin of all. Yet this initiatory pyramid stood on shaky ground. Hermes, in his wisdom, failed to see that the true foundation was neither the mind nor the sacred-it was time. Time, silent and omnipresent, unites what has been severed. It connects opposites, dissolves the illusion of polarity, and sustains creation. The mind cannot create without time; the sacred cannot exist without time. Hermes, despite his vision, remained trapped in sacrality, believing divine order was the axis of the universe. But the true axis is the now-the reflective time where all things manifest. --- 2. Control: Duality as a Principle of Submission Linguistic duality is not a discovery; it is an invention-a tool of polarization that transformed the "I" into the center and the "other now" into the periphery. Masculine: the sun, order, action. Feminine: the moon, chaos, submission. What could have been a dance of interdependence became a rigid, immutable hierarchy. The word "Lord" exemplifies this perpetuation of control. Its oldest origins trace back to "Baal," the Canaanite god of fertility and storms, whose name means "Lord" or "master." In some depictions, Baal is associated with a bull's head, symbolizing strength, authority, and centralized power. Baal: Fertility, Infertility, and Control 1. Fertility and Bread: Baal was worshipped as the bringer of rain, essential for crops, linking him to abundance and prosperity. 2. Infertility and Famine: When rain failed, Baal embodied sterility and hunger, showcasing his absolute control over material life. 3. Absolute Control: Baal personified the archetype of power over abundance and scarcity-he who controls bread controls society. This logic migrated into hierarchical systems, where "Lord" or "Master" no longer referred solely to a god but to a patriarchal figure wielding centralized power. Baal’s duality-as both provider and depriver-mirrors the essence of hierarchical control: sustaining dependence and submission through the promise or threat of essential resources. In the same vein as klēros-inheritance or fate-control of time and sustenance was centralized in figures of authority, perpetuating cycles of dependency. The "now" was stripped of its reflective power and transformed into eternal debt. The promise of a "different now," one that could be controlled, became the ultimate tool of submission. --- 3. The Semantic Game: A Disguised Order "Hierarchy" is not merely a word; it is a game. Its board is the collective mind, and each piece is strategically placed to protect the king. "ι" (I): Proclaims authority-the "I" raised as the immutable center of power. "ιε" (yes): Represents implicit, unquestioned consent. "ιερ" (sacred): Masks domination under the guise of divinity, legitimizing control. "ιεραρ" (father): The centralized figure embodying paternalistic authority. "ιεραρχ" (hierarchical authority): The power flow, ascending like a ladder, sustained by a pact of command and obedience. "ιεραρχία" (hierarchy): The system itself-rigid, vertical, each rung supporting the oppression above it. This semantic construction whispers an unspoken truth: "Yes, I accept the sacred, paternalism, and authority." --- 4. The Sword and the Seed If the sacred is the sword, time is the seed. The seed in the Aeon carries the potential of creation: unity, interconnection, an eternal cycle of possibilities. But the sword, in cutting it, did not destroy-it reshaped. It turned primordial unity into a narrative of polarities. Masculinity held the blade, while femininity became the soil that bears its scars. Yet the seed endures, hidden in the depths of the now. It resists fragmentation and the language that seeks to reshape it. --- 5. Rescuing the Reflection True essence cannot be severed, only obscured. Language can be both sword and mirror, and it is in the mirror that we rediscover the reflection of lost unity. There is no "I" and "other"; there is only continuum. There is no light and shadow; there is the interplay between them. The true power of language is not to divide but to integrate. Language can be the Aeon-not a blade that cuts, but a river that unites. What if time is not something that escapes? What if the present is the mirror where everything is already contained? To rescue the now is to disarm the sword and replant the seed. --- 6. Life Is Not Sacred; It Is Reflective Sacrality is a mask that creates distance. Life is not sacred; it is reflective. Time is not a lord; it is the mirror where our actions are projected. Every choice reverberates-not to a distant "other now," but to the moment where we exist. Here, in the now, hierarchy loses its dominion, and the reflection restores power to us. --- 7. Liberating Time: Conclusion What is language but a field of possibilities? What is time but a reflection inviting us to see beyond masks? True freedom is not achieved; it is recognized. It lies in reflection, in re-signification, in disarming the sword so the seed may sprout. Time, after all, is not the tyrant we were told it is. It is neutral, infinite, and entirely ours. It belongs to no one because it is everyone. And in the now, everything is possible. --- Final Provocation If "hierarchy" was the word that imprisoned, could Aeonarchy be the word that liberates? A vision of time as free, where the now is not currency nor debt, but pure potential. What if time were not governed by a ladder of power, but an open field where every step leads to new possibilities? These questions have no ready answers-they are seeds, waiting to germinate in the soil of the now.

And that's a good thing.
he did say in other videos that there are different hierarchies in society so that most people rank high in at least one.

I wont level myself up due to the level in which society is at in this era!

@Willow watched the video. I've seen Sapolsky's work before. What exactly do you think it teaches, by comparison to Peterson?
What about standards of attractiveness? Can they be objective?

Yet when it comes to leadership: even “divine appointed” leadership there is a tedious accountability and responsibility. Even the high priests had to tie a rope around their waist upon entering thee holy throne room of God, in case they were judged unworthy and dropped dead. God is not a respecter of people. God is thee ultimate leveler. Hannah’s Prayer is very good perspective on what humans deem valuable and what God sustains and sees valuable. The arrogant are leveled and broken. The humble and meek are lifted up. Status just gets sold for parts 😉

True words… unfortunately most people don’t get it because their minds are closed to living.
Reflection as Liberation from Hierarchical and Semantic Control
---
1. Language: Sword and Mirror
Words are not innocent. Behind every syllable lies intent-a weapon, a lever moving the pillars of power. Language, once a natural flow of meaning, has been tamed, bent like a river nourishing the castle of domination. A prime example of this artifice is the word "hierarchy."
"Hier"-the sacred-was raised as an altar where power kneels only to legitimize its own supremacy.
---
2. Control: Duality as a Principle of Submission
Linguistic duality is not a discovery; it is an invention-a tool of polarization that transformed the "I" into the center and the "other now" into the periphery.
Baal: Fertility, Infertility, and Control
---
3. The Semantic Game: A Disguised Order
"Hierarchy" is not merely a word; it is a game.
This semantic construction whispers an unspoken truth:
"Yes, I accept the sacred, paternalism, and authority."
---
4. The Sword and the Seed
If the sacred is the sword, time is the seed.
---
5. Rescuing the Reflection
True essence cannot be severed, only obscured.
---
6. Life Is Not Sacred; It Is Reflective
Sacrality is a mask that creates distance. Life is not sacred; it is reflective. Time is not a lord; it is the mirror where our actions are projected. Every choice reverberates-not to a distant "other now," but to the moment where we exist. Here, in the now, hierarchy loses its dominion, and the reflection restores power to us.
---
7. Liberating Time: Conclusion
What is language but a field of possibilities? What is time but a reflection inviting us to see beyond masks? True freedom is not achieved; it is recognized. It lies in reflection, in re-signification, in disarming the sword so the seed may sprout.
Time, after all, is not the tyrant we were told it is. It is neutral, infinite, and entirely ours. It belongs to no one because it is everyone. And in the now, everything is possible.
---
Final Provocation
If "hierarchy" was the word that imprisoned, could Aeonarchy be the word that liberates?
A vision of time as free, where the now is not currency nor debt, but pure potential.
What if time were not governed by a ladder of power, but an open field where every step leads to new possibilities? These questions have no ready answers-they are seeds, waiting to germinate in the soil of the now.
