When I was younger I couldn't understand people who became masters at one small thing. As I've gotten older I've come to realise that mastery of one small thing leads to mastery and understanding of much greater things. This is perfectly illustrated here by one of the true masters of music. We are so lucky to live among such wisdom - thank you for sharing this!
Thanks for watching! I've been fascinated by both the art and science of mastery for several years. That is actually a major part of what I hope to bring to everyone through this podcast.
Nice to listen to this conversation! James played together with Ole Edvard Antonsen in Oslo, Norway some years ago. I was there and enjoyed it from start to end. Two great musicians who loved playing together.
Great broadcast Jose! James sharing his unique ideas about learning and playing will give me new ideas to keep in mind when I pick up the horn! Congrats on the 2nd year of the Trumpet Gurus Hang Podcast!
If I was younger and teaching at the college level, your videos would be the basis for my studio curriculum. I would assign student a video a week. Watch this video, practice, then come back next week and we'll play some music and discuss the video. Another great video of two masters talking. Thx
family and i saw james perform w/new zealand army band in 2018, such a great performance from everyone that night. has a great sense of humor too! happy to see him on and it was nice to listen! thanks for uploading & james for coming on!
Thanks tou so much for this! latley I was kinda down on my trumpet playing strugeling with my endurence and range. and I'm not saying that this interview and the insights that I got from it completley curde that BUT I'm practecing know and somehow after listeing to James and trying to use the things that he has said, I don't know it just feel beter like i'm fighting les against the trumpet...
Bottom pedal note register is underrated also . As far as the trumpet goes, I feel it's hard and difficult although it can be a piece of cake sometimes . What's difficult ? Only 3 vavles to display 12 different keys those various finger combinations can really hang you up, mouth corners and tongue control , press and release control, the use of head and chest voice as well as gut power. Brass is not cakewalk at all . It's like digging a ditch and programming. Programming sound images in your mind so that you'll hear it before you play it .

This is the best one yet, Jose! I think I need to rewatch this 1000 times to absorb all the SOLID FUCKING GOLD information stored in these 75 minutes!
That pretty much sums it up! I wish we could have gone longer, but we started at 1:30 am his time!
