    I'm about halfway through the video, and so far my favorite meme is the one about how philosophy is looked down on by those who extol the virtues of science (or what they perceive to be science which is usually some form of pseudoscience). Many times, I've witnessed self proclaimed atheists putting forth such arguments as "we care about evidence, not philosophical arguments for the existence of gods; arguments are worthless" and until I interject, it never once dawned on them how laughably self refuting this line of argumentation really is.

    Meme about looking down on philosophy. Isn't there a name for a bias when people criticize or reject what they don't understand? Argument from ignorance?

    Question for the Vibe: In your euryphthro dilemma meme, why did you choose to label the person in the meme as a "classical theist" rather than just "theist" ? What exactly is meant by "classical theist" and how many different types of "theist" are there besides "classical" ?

    • @KrisTheKrisMan
      @KrisTheKrisMan Год назад +2

      ‘Classical theist’ refers to someone who believes in the God of classical theism (Christian, Islamic and Jewish interpretations of God) whereas ‘theist’ by itself refers to someone who believes in a God (meaning any god, not just the god of classical theism); a theist could be a classical theist but ‘theist’ could also refer to someone who believes in Hindu gods, it’s very ‘all thumbs are fingers but not all fingers are thumbs’.

    • @PhilosophyVibe
      @PhilosophyVibe  Год назад +1

      Yes, as Kris has explained. Other theists besides classical could be polytheists or pantheists etc.

    I had an online debate with a Christian before and I explained how it's entirely possible for humanity to come up with morality by themselves without needing God to teach them. He absolutely could not see it happen and it blew my mind as of how much he underestimated human intellect.

    The Hegel meme was good as well. Anything from Hegel or Marx is invariably going to be incoherent drivel.

    • @KrisTheKrisMan
      @KrisTheKrisMan Год назад +1

      I think you misunderstood the meme because Marx doesn’t fit into the joke - the meme is talking about how Hegel’s writing is not very accessible due to how it was written, most of Marx’s work is fairly accessibly written which is why he wasn’t mentioned in the meme.
      Also have you read either Marx or Hegel? I have my issues with both of those philosophers but I don’t see how they are ‘incoherent’ or ‘drivel’.

    • @mugsofmirth8101
      @mugsofmirth8101 Год назад

      @@KrisTheKrisMan I don't think I misunderstood the meme as the creator of the meme clearly stated he attempted to read paragraphs by Hegel a minimum of 6 times and still couldn't get past how incoherently written it is.
      Yes I have read some Marx (who was a Hegelian, widely known to be a protégé of Hegel and thus highly influenced by Hegel both conceptually and in writing style) and I found Marx's work to be similarly incoherent to that of Hegel's. I can accept that you have a different take on Marx than I do but you won't be able to convince me that his writing was coherent or sensible in any way.
