Don't shoot me if someone else has already suggested this. There are a few ways to avoid your soggy soap issue. A dish with pebbles to allow the water to drain to the bottom of the bowl. A soap dish with holes in it to let the water drain out and keep your soap dry (depends on the surface it is sitting on). Or a soap bag and hang it from the faucet and down into the sink! :) Good luck... fighting over soggy soap isn't worth it. ;)
It is going to sound so weird, but.... my husband and I have kept all of the graphic tees that we have been given or had when we were dating (uni shirts and all that) and we are going to sew it into blankets for our kids (far off future plan) when they are babies. I'm honestly so excited when I can turn them into blankets!
NOT WEIRD AT ALL my mom and I have done that my entire life whenever I was a kid, and I would go through my shirts and pick out the ones I wanted to get rid of. If there was one that I just loved so much from a certain memory or the design on it or it was from an event like my cheer or dance, my mom would keep it, and when I turned 18, she gave me the quilt made out of all of my childhood clothes. Right now we're working on second on made from all my old bad shirts because for about 5 years that all I would wear
This is a great idea! My sister made me one years ago from shirts out of my favourite band. I use and take that blanket everywhere. And seriously who doesn’t love the soft feeling of old worn t shirts 😊
Never mind the kids, make a throw rug for the couch so you can enjoy them now. When designing the layout, keep in mind how you would cut down/rearrange for kid blankets.
Here in very rural US, after composting and recycling what I can, the only alternative is a trash pickup service in our small town. They require your waste be in trash bags before placing in dumpster. We used to have a recycling center, but city closed it, because it was costing them too much. Really miss it.
I’m in the same boat (and also in rural US)! Our recycling center is struggling as well - they stopped taking glass, and they’re getting rid of paper/cardboard next. The important thing is that we’re doing what we can. 😊
Not everyone has common bins with bags in them. If I threw my trash loose into my apartment dumpsters, the trash would blow away. It's a necessary evil.
The first thing i thought when I saw that. Many places so not want you to throw your trash loose because when collection day comes, too many little errant bits will escape
Yes to garden content. I feel like you could just quietly make use of all those unused garden beds on your rooftop that seem to be ignored and you'd be set for produce. I still think you should do a little blurb on home composting. My offer to hook you up with a vermicomposting system still stands and it wouldn't take up much space at all.
Okay the soap situation. Get soap lifts or just do your own. Usually they’re like pieces of loofa to help keep soap dry. What I unintentionally did was I kept all the little bits of leftover soap in my soap dish (which also has holes at the bottom for water to drain out) and it ended up working like a “soap lift” and my soap stays dry all the time. It’s great.
I bought 3 slatted wooden potato boxes, lined them with jute/burlap. I fill one up and then place an empty one on top. I've filled all three now. Don't know how it will go but I expect good results . Compost is a great way, to build your soil and it's excellent for removing CO2 from the atmosphere - soil sequestration.
We live in a residential area, and they fine you if the trash that is lose and makes a mess when they dump it. I know bc we have been fined and our neighbors have as well. Yeah... idk... what else to say that bc it makes me mad.
Ya same! Each household has its allocatrd garbage bin, and the garbage collector would refuse to clear the bin if the garbage were loose/not in bags...
We have the same issue. I’d recommend using brown paper bags from the grocery store. That keeps small things from flying away/littering as the bin is emptied.
I've heard loose trash is really problematic because most of it flies out and ends up as litter. We reuse paper bags from bulk food purchases (oats, rice, beans, etc.) and tie it off with twist ties from buying loose veggies. Not perfect, but better than plastic and contained.
This. My collection service wants everything in a tied bag, but they do not enforce it. As a result, the streets are lined with litter that flies from the trash truck. I'm willing to sacrifice those plastic bags to keep my trash off the streets.
if you have the space keeping your food scraps in the freezer is great for reducing smells and fruit flies also you can separate veggies and make a vegetable stock once a week
There's this magnet that you stick on to your sink with a suction cup, and a little round metal thingy that you stick into the soap. The soap stays inside the sink bowl, draining into the sink.
My husband had a magnetic 'soap dish' the magnetic holder was mounted to the wall and the metal disk is pushed into the soap bar. It woeked really well.
We don't even have a compost bin. Instead, we use one of our stainless mixing bowls. Since we cook every day, the bowl gets emptied every day or every other day, so it's emptied before it starts to smell, and therefore doesn't not need a lit. After it's emptied, it goes straight into the dishwasher.

"We empty it at least once a week" - lol, our compost bin is full each day 🤣
I would love garden content! My dad has a garden, but he used to be a farmer. It took a lot of energy to maintain when I was a kid as it was giant. I no longer live with him, but I'm a student graduating college hoping to move out soon and grow my own food. I would love to learn about gardening without having to have tons of space/land and how to do so in a way that doesn't harm the environment (pesticides). It would also be cool to touch on what you grow at different times of the year, seasonal food, and even what you can grow within the climate! Even like potted plants, herbs, and how to make use of the space you have.
Im from FL our beaches get trashed when people don't use trash bags. So much trash flies out of trash trucks, especially when dumpsters get dumped into the trucks. I feel like some sort of trash bag should be a must. Even if you stuff trash within another piece of trash, thats better than nothing.
I had no paper towels until I had a puppy. He necessitated paper towels. Now that he's fully trained, I haven't bought paper towels in a year but I do keep a roll for emergencies.
Loved this video! Just one touch point on garbage bags, I think if you reuse grocery bags for garbage that could be a good alternative. If your garbage items are loose and light, they have a higher chance of blowing away whether out of your bin, the truck or even once they've arrived at the dump. So while large black garbage bags are totally unnecessary in my humble opinion, I do think there's benefit to using some sort of bag to hold it all together and reduce the likelihood of accidental pollution.
There are a variety of soap dishes wich dont make soap soggy. Soap dishes with holes, silicon ones(amazon) with ridges and opening at the end for water to drain, even you can hang the soap in mesh if you do dishes or laundry. If you are worried about soap scum on sink or wash basin. Clean them with residue with sponge or scrub. No additional cleaners required for sinks and faucets😉
Great soap dish? Try Luffa discs or Luffa cut in oval sponge form. They hold the "whett soap sudds" in and ventilate from underneeth, keeping it all claen and dry. You cann then just wash out the sink with ithe Luffa when enough has hapened and then it's nice and clean again (everything!). It even looks pretty, it is compostable, if it gets old and scruffy (maybe once a year) you can retiere it as a simple cleaning sponge and eventually chuck it in your compost bin. You can even grow Luffas yourself (it is like a cucumber plant).
You both are so awesome! I LOVE the soap dish comment, that’s why we switched to refilling liquid Soap for hand washing. For the shower we have a Woden soap tray that has nice air flow that dries well in between
I think that paper towels can be bought but only if you'll need to dispose of the towel after. Like cleaning up oil is something that will instantly take out a towel and unless you're rags are falling apart paper is fine.
The Mrs and I started our journey towards zero waste with gardening. We likely never will get to zero waste status but we’re doing our best! I would love some gardening content in addition to everything else.
My husband and I replaced condoms with natural family planning. It's a pretty awesome change since it's zero waste and you are more aware of what's happening in a woman's body. Sometimes this information can even help your doctor diagnose you according to your symptoms and chart.
We by compostable bags because we are required to bag all compost and garbage before putting it into the dumpsters at our apartment. Everything has to be separated.
I really wish we could ditch garbage bags. Our building has signs everywhere not to put garbage in the compactor without a garbage bag. It makes me so sad!
Nice to see a video with a variety of products. And wow, a book? I am so excited about that! I genuinely love your videos because you make sustainability seem doable. Looking forward to buying the book!
Simple home composting for your situation. Find a container a bit bigger than your metal compost container, say a broken bucket. Remove base, bury wider opening 2 inches in soil of one of your garden plots, im guessing rooftop makes most sense. Can also hollow out some of inside soil if desired. Add food waste. Add layer of soil sometimes. Fashion a lid and weight with rock. If rooftop, id transport some soil and worms from community garden. Ignore. If it gets full, revert to apartment composting system. It'll break down eventually.
I have a metal soap dish that attached to the wall (suction cups) it’s metal wire. The combination makes it super easy for the soap to properly airdry!
If you're looking for a new soap dish, I recommend the Luvan soap dishes from Amazon. It is slotted on top so the water can drain into a little chamber which can then be drained. Haven't had any issues with mold or anything, and you can take it apart to clean the inside. Only caveat is that they're plastic and from Amazon... But if you're on the hunt I definitely recommend this style! My bar soaps last a lot longer because they're not mushy.
Back home( PI) we never used paper towels. But, since we moved here (US) I can't remember when the last time I never use paper towels. Great tips and keep it up.
The only annoyance with using towels as an alternative if you don’t have your own laundry/dryer. My wife and I got awhile had to go to a laundromat which is common in NYC. Otherwise you have to hand wash them and wait for them to dry. My compost pickup got halted during covid as it used to be in our neighborhood. They are putting it back though.
Great video, guys, thanks ! Here in Europe there’s a thing called a magnetic soap holder. It’s basically a beer bottle cap-shaped thing you push into your soap and a succion thing with a magnet you stick on the wall, sink... it’s great!
This is an old vid but maybe y’all will still see this! I use a soapstandle for my bar soap and it works amazing! It’s basically a little ring that has prongs on the top that you press the soap onto. It sounds confusing but it’s so great! I couldn’t recommend it enough!
yey for garden content, the best way to save the planet is by growing your own food! been working on our fruit growing in the tropics eco village Fruit Haven!
Vermacomposting is a great way to speed up the composting process indoors and there are a few “worm condos” that have multiple layers. I’ve heard good things about them and allegedly they do not stink.
Absolutely all of the garden content! Introduce us to all of your plant babies! 🪴 And super excited for an e-book, I'm sure it will live up to Leah's hype. Also, love Leah's earrings. ☺
Fun thing about countertop compost bins: keep them in the fridge or freezer and you can extend the time between trips to the compost pile. Also if folks on here are interested in composting, check to see if your community offers compost pick up, or if there's a composting company available in your area. Our small city does NOT offer compost pick up, but there's a small composting business that charges us $7 a month for twice a month pick up ($14 for weekly pick up). It's been amazing. We are lucky enough to have a large enough backyard to have our own composter, but in the winter it becomes useless and sometimes it gets quite full so having a company come and take our kitchen scraps the rest of the time works out great. Oh and do not use compostable plastic liners in your compost bin unless you know for a fact that your pickup composts with the method that can break it down (backyard compost piles don't get hot enough to break biodegradable plastic down). Instead, if you MUST have a liner, consider using a plain paper bag (the old bagged lunch bags). These are compostable and depending on where you buy them, you can find ones that are from recycled paper. If you want to go crazy hardcore, you can try vermicomposting in your own home (i advise having a basement or a unused mud room, it can get kinda earthy smelling). You'd be surprised what worms can break up and destroy and how fast the little buggers chug it all down. This is next level, though. It's a lot of work to keep up with and you're going to need to do something with the dirt. Still it's one way to compost in your home without having space. Once again - no biodegradable plastic. Anyway hope these tips help :) - sincerely a gal who works at a non-profit that does a lot with composting
That’s a really good idea. I just bought a set of flat loofers for the kitchen but I’m not keen on them. They will absolutely be going under my soap now.
I have a great solution to your soap dish/soggy soap problem... We've been using Dr Bronner's castile soap (and other all natural brands) for many years now. In our kitchen and all the bathrooms, we have refillable foaming soap dispensers (pump action). You put a little Dr Bronner's in (scent of your choice), add water, shake a little, and voila! You have a super clean, easy to use, never soggy, all-natural soap that lasts a long time. Maybe your local bulk food place has castile soap and you could fill up some mason jars. BTW, kudos on kicking graphic tees to the curb. I have been wearing plain solid color tee's (no graphics or logs) for many years because I don't want to advertise for anyone else. :)
I love the feature of your rooftop garden! I'm headed to my Masters, possibly PhD doing research on rooftop agrivoltaics (green roofs with solar panels, focused on agricultural plants). Also an avid houseplant enthusiast, I can't wait for that houseplant/garden tour!
I love this! In 2020 I did a 'No-Buy' year (which I'm hoping to make a video on soon) and SO many of these things are things I don't buy any more because of it too!
If you have access to Muji (I know, it's not the most sustainable of brands) check out their metal soap dish . I find it to be one of the few that keeps soap bars dry. And it also comes with very little packaging.
During the winter, do you buy some alternative to the salad greens in clamshells? Or do you have any tips for better storing bunches of spinach etc? At most stores there's such a sad variety of greens that aren't in plastic it sucks!! You can buy spinach, lettuce, and kale which are alright but sometimes I just really want that varietyyy. XP And heck yes to plant and garden content!
I don't know if it's available in Canada but you can use "savon de Marseille" (it's green!) (Marseille Soap) as your soap dish ! it's like a big square of soap with olive oil etc.. inside of it it's perfect for dishes or just clean everywhere too 😊 you can also use when you clean the floor the "paillettes de savon de Marseille" (Glitter Marseille Soap) it's like chunks of Marseille Soap that you put in hot water and voilà ! love from Amiens (France.. not Australia (x )
Great tips! One back to you...a great soap “dish” I love and easy to make depending on how handy you are...is one I’ve had for years from a crafters market...just a soap rack made from twigs (nailed) and then dipped in wax. Soap dries up and not soggy for the next user😉
Put your soap on one of those combination scrubber sponges. Then, when you need to clean up around sink or shower, just use the already soapy sponge, and run it thru dishwasher, put it back on sink.
We army allowed to dump things loosely in our bins. Makes no sense but we can be fined so instead I use recycled bags and put as much in there as possible
Ever since I land on your channel, I love every content you and leah put out🧡 And I totally agree on graphic tees. As i do own some but, most of my tees are just solid and I don’t mind it or get tired as easily. I can’t wait to read your book later this year.
No. The tiger t-shirt will never go out of fashion. Also, would recommend a wooden/bamboo slatted soap dish - looks cool and water runs through the holes
I've also searched for a good soap dish! I use a metal mesh dish with feet, because I find that the soap has to be elevated at least like 2 cm and have REALLY good drainage to not get soggy.
Hey Levi, great video! I just wanted to leave a suggestion and say I'd love to watch a video on your suggestions to making the bathroom as waste free as possible. I'm aware of your Tushy Bidet and the razor you recommend, but I'd love to know what other products you have in your bathroom, like what tooth brush you use. Does Leah have any sustainable beauty products/brands that she loves? What do you do with your floss?! That kind of stuff. See you in the next video 🍻
I stopped using bags for my trash and I was just dumping everything into the trash bin but then I heard someone say that if you don’t put your trash in a closed bag then when the truck comes to pick up the trash and dump it in the truck small pieces can just fly away, so now I just use the unwanted bags I get every once in a while from take out.
If you find the perfect soap dish you must show it - I’m hunting for one too!!! Love the roof top garden, it’s such a shame the others are not full with greens 😞
It would be really cool if all those rooftop plots got utilized. maybe there could be a system where every year unclaimed plots get divided among people that would like to adpot them. within the people that live there obviously.
I shall demystify garbage and compost bags for you :) Some municipalities do not allow you to put unbagged garbage or compost into your curbside bin (like Langley). So we really don't have a choice.
I get how you would think reusing the same bag for trash over and over is better but it's actually not. When your trash isn't all concealed in a bag it's much more likely to fly out of the truck when it dumbs the dumpster and when it is dumbing other dumpsters or just going down the road. So not keeping your trash in a bag contributes more to litter
I follow someone on Instagram (zero waste chef) who uses a mason jar lid and 2 rubber bands wrapped around it in a cross cross as a soap dish. The soap bar sits on the rubber bands and drips into the mason jar lid. She had rubber bands lying around from farmers markets and such, so not sure if you do too but maybe someone else will find this helpful as most people have those two things lying around😊
Feel you on the soap dish issue. I think I spent like 3 hours looking for a zero waste soap dish that wasn't bamboo (because it gets moldy) and has high ridges. Cannot find. A zero waste vlogger suggested a soap saddle but I haven't tried it. Still looking.
in my family we never even used paper towels xD so expensive and so useless. Unfortunately in my town we need to put the trash in trashbags and its super annoying. also my reccomendation is the lush soap dish, zero waste packaging and made from leftover clay, really really cute or if you cant find that i also have found bamboo soapdish thats like a drying rack. Hope that helps!
Agree! It's always "we don't use dryer sheets" - I didn't even know they existed until zero waste RUclipsrs started patting themselves on the back for not using them.
Garden content please!! All plants get sick at my home, I need inspiration and help. Great video as usual, you both are awesome! Greetings from Germany
I guess it depends on how your city collects waste that can't be recycled, but for my city I heard using bin bags was best. The rationale bing that it stops small pieces of trash flying away and becoming litter when the bin's emptied into the truck, or it escaping into the wild when it gets to the landfill (though that whole aspect is grim and it's hard to imagine how containing it all in more plastic is much better, but I guess at least it might minimise the chances of wildlife ingesting it or getting trapped by it?)

A great hack for compost is to freeze it! It can build up over a week and won't smell :)
a compost bin can also be made from an old coffee can and if it fits in your freezer it'll also prevent flies and other undesirable smells
I use the coffee filter from my morning cup as a compost bottom. And the bag that toilet roles come in serve as a waste bin baf.
Back home( PI) we never used paper towels. But, since we moved here (US) I can't remember when the last time I never use paper towels. Great tips and keep it up.
Leah, I love your earrings!!! Both, thank you for another awesome video!!!
It’s basically a beer bottle cap-shaped thing you push into your soap and a succion thing with a magnet you stick on the wall, sink... it’s great!
There it is : images.app.goo.gl/GwNBUiy2B3w6tPk4A
This is an old vid but maybe y’all will still see this! I use a soapstandle for my bar soap and it works amazing! It’s basically a little ring that has prongs on the top that you press the soap onto. It sounds confusing but it’s so great! I couldn’t recommend it enough!
yey for garden content, the best way to save the planet is by growing your own food!
been working on our fruit growing in the tropics eco village Fruit Haven!
id love to avoid plastic bags for trash but unfortunately they are required for trash pickup where i live (the bins are not allowed)
Same
The rooftop garden was the best part!!! You are so lucky, I love it! Yes, more garden and plants content.
Many municipalities require you to bag the garbage you put in the bins. I'm not sure about Vancouver, but your neighbouring Burnaby does.
Also for a trash bag you could switch to a pail liner. Typically used with cloth diapers but they make all sizes. And they wash so easily
I feel you about the soap dish problem...I haven't found the right one either... 👀 😂
so proud of you for no longer buying graphic tees 😭
Honestly this means so much coming from you Joe. 🙏🏻
For the soap, my mom uses a slice of Loofah sponge under the soap in the dish. It gives airflow and dries out faster.
Love this!
This is the first video I’ve watched of yours, and the two of you are so fun! Thank you for the informative video!
Thanks for being here!
I love the feature of your rooftop garden! I'm headed to my Masters, possibly PhD doing research on rooftop agrivoltaics (green roofs with solar panels, focused on agricultural plants). Also an avid houseplant enthusiast, I can't wait for that houseplant/garden tour!
Next week Armando!
Yessss to the garden content!! Love to know what food you grow.
I love this! In 2020 I did a 'No-Buy' year (which I'm hoping to make a video on soon) and SO many of these things are things I don't buy any more because of it too!
I also just use rags!! Grew up using old tshirts as rags and I still do-as long as they're washed, it's all good.
I'd love garden & houseplant tour!!! My favorite thing to grow is Swiss Chard. I could eat it daily YUM! Excited for the ebook too
Awesome! Thanks for the feedback Hilary!
If you have access to Muji (I know, it's not the most sustainable of brands) check out their metal soap dish . I find it to be one of the few that keeps soap bars dry. And it also comes with very little packaging.
You should ask your neighbours if they are going to use their garden boxes? It is a shame they are sitting empty. Great video btw!
They might not have moved in yet
I love how much fun I was able to have while learning about things I don't need to buy because of your video!
Put your soap on one of those combination scrubber sponges. Then, when you need to clean up around sink or shower, just use the already soapy sponge, and run it thru dishwasher, put it back on sink.
Heeeeeeey that’s pretty good!
We army allowed to dump things loosely in our bins. Makes no sense but we can be fined so instead I use recycled bags and put as much in there as possible
Ever since I land on your channel, I love every content you and leah put out🧡
And I totally agree on graphic tees. As i do own some but, most of my tees are just solid and I don’t mind it or get tired as easily.
I can’t wait to read your book later this year.
Thank you so much!
No. The tiger t-shirt will never go out of fashion. Also, would recommend a wooden/bamboo slatted soap dish - looks cool and water runs through the holes
Levi actually does have Bi wife energy 😂🙌
I've also searched for a good soap dish! I use a metal mesh dish with feet, because I find that the soap has to be elevated at least like 2 cm and have REALLY good drainage to not get soggy.
Yes! Agreed! The technology exists!
You could have a Bokashi compost and use the result at the community garden and in your roofgarden. At least in the summer.
Ethique make a good soap dish that even works well in the shower! Beside the sink you could just leave the lid off :)
Good to know!!
This is a great option!
Confirms also prevent spread of STI so I am glad you mentioned it but I would stress that
I do love graphic tees but I buy them from artists that inspire me!
Part 2 please of what u guys don’t buy. Thank you
Thank you!
I second that, I feel really lost sometimes when it comes do stuff like this. Sometimes just small simple alternatives are the best!
If you find the perfect soap dish you must show it - I’m hunting for one too!!! Love the roof top garden, it’s such a shame the others are not full with greens 😞
It’s hard to find soap that does not contain palm oil. Most of the soap at Whole Foods and other local supermarkets contain this.
My Etsy shop has package free and palm oil free Soap! Search Real. Simple. Care on Etsy💕
It would be really cool if all those rooftop plots got utilized. maybe there could be a system where every year unclaimed plots get divided among people that would like to adpot them. within the people that live there obviously.
Love the video! Homemade salad dressing tastes so much better than store-bought as well 🙌🏼
Heck yeah!
lol we use paper towel in the bottom of our compost bin (but got rid of bags two years ago😃) 😳🤦🏻♀️💫🌎❤️
I really enjoyed this video looking forward to more like this!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Try a soap saver or just tie a few rubber bands to elevate the soap!
I want to see garden tour content!! I grow my own salad greens under a grow light so that is exciting!
in my family we never even used paper towels xD so expensive and so useless. Unfortunately in my town we need to put the trash in trashbags and its super annoying. also my reccomendation is the lush soap dish, zero waste packaging and made from leftover clay, really really cute or if you cant find that i also have found bamboo soapdish thats like a drying rack. Hope that helps!
I have a veggie garden, but even my garden doesn’t look this amazing, great job guys!
Another great video guys, love the salad dressing tip, totally going to try that
Nice! Enjoy!
I love the variety that you shared and not the stereotypical “we no longer use plastic bags” kind of things!!
Thanks so much! I really didn’t want to feel like this was a typical list so that means a lot!
Agree! It's always "we don't use dryer sheets" - I didn't even know they existed until zero waste RUclipsrs started patting themselves on the back for not using them.
I put my soap bars on pieces of loofah! Also your garden looks great! “We are FARMERS, my love” 😂 I love all garden and anti-consumerist content lol
