Hi Laura, and Ollie, I think the joy your home has brought to the millions that have watched your channel is worth more than you’d ever be able to quantify. The handyman is right in his estimation, no offense to him, but that’s HIS own opinion and the extent of his vision. Now, you and Ollie have, through this home, created a bigger vision for yourselves and by extension, for us your loyal viewers and internet friends. I don’t think it is wise to try to estimate the inestimable.

I have had two homes where people have not done a job properly and has caused me issues etc. you have put ur heart and soul into this house. So anyone on the future will benefit from ur precise work. U have given that house a life again. There is nothing wrong with doing a job properly. I think that gets forgotten in todays throw away society.

Yes! It is worth it Laura. This is your home, if you had rushed, cut corner or not used the high spec items you and Ollie have, I can tell you from experience you would look at things in the future and wish you had. If you were flipping the house then maybe, but hopefully you will be in your beautiful home for many years to come. Keep up the good work, I love watching x

Think how you feel about some of the things you have unearthed. Someone who didn't have the same perfectionism and standards as you and Ollie, stuffed newspapers into gaps around the window (if I remember correctly). There is a possibility that from a financial POV you may not get your money back, but the upside is that you have an amazing/enviable home/job. These videos have been a joy to watch 😊

Laura it has taken us 26 years to finally finish our home . We have just replaced 50 yr old windows and will replace our driveway early next year . We were a one wage family due to chronic illness and whilst there were times I almost cried at the frustration of not having the beautiful home I always wanted . I can tell you it was worth it !

When you are a perfectionist, you are a perfectionist. There is nothing you can do about it, I know. The answer to the question " Is it worth it" , is definitely a resounding Yes it is. You are both doing a brilliant job and you should be extremely proud of yourselves. Sometimes it's hard going, but worth it in the end xx

Laura, It is absolutely worth it!! Your handyman is a tradie and his perspective is about profit - how many tradesman put in the effort and time to do a job to a high standard and not a standard that will net them the highest return. You are doing things that will stand the test of time and to an exceptionally high standard!! You will never regret doing things properly - you will alway regret doing things shoddily. Your house is becoming a WONDERFUL home and that is totally because of your perfectionism - don't be influenced by someone who has no real stake in the job they do - which is to do the work and move on to the next project and so on and so on!! You and Ollie are inspirational and your work ethic and attention to detail would benefit a lot of tradesman - be very proud of yourselves and keep doing it your way!!

I just wanted to add....we also just came to the end of a diy renovation after 2 years and all of our spare time. I get the exhausted feeling. But don't underestimated the skills you have learned along the way. You will save money with those throughout your life whichever home you are in. We will never need to hire a tiler, get someone in to lay floors etc etc and we will pass these skills down to. Plus the freedom of if you want something and you can't afford it you can build it!

  • @pinkapples33

I’ve been going thru a bit of an existential home crisis myself worrying that we made a bad decision to buy an older home vs a new build/flipped home. The work feels daunting, but part of what makes old homes “higher quality” is often that ppl tended to overbuild back then. We went with middle-tier contractors/trades and the work has been a bit hit or miss. We’ve decided to hire higher quality trades ppl, but it means spacing out the renovations even more to save up for the markup. At least you can trust that you’re making a safe, well-built home for your family. Definitely cut yourselves some slack, but your efforts have certainly not been a waste of time!

Hi Laura we are 74 and 78 this bungalow we are currently in is our 5th reno We did not intent to buy a reno but because we wanted a really good area it was the only way to buy However age is our problem we can no longer do theses renovations so it's been done buy builders and tradesmen we will not see the added equity in this property but my children will and we have created a lovely home for our last year's to enjoy (Oh it's not quiet finished yet) been here 3 years the pandemic and rising cost of everything has been abit of a shock You will see the proceeds of your hard work as all your labour cost have been obliterated by you doing it yourself. Enjoy the journey but enjoy life too yes get a little help to speed it along x

I think you have done an outstanding job on your home. If it's your forever home where you plan to raise your children then I think it is worth it to do what you have done. You will enjoy your home for years knowing it all the work that went before and that it is quality work. If, on the other hand, you always intended to sell this home and use it as a stepping stone, then I agree, you should have not gone the extra mile. I think the home is lovely and would be quite happy to live there for a very long time, though I don't live in the U.K.

Hi Laura and Ollie - Has all the toil and tears been worth it? Very much so in my opinion. You have both worked so very hard to an exacting standard, and that standard is right for you. Will you get your money back in raised equity, or reselling - that's an unknown (there's always a ceiling in an area), but think of it this way - how much more would it all have cost had you got people in to do everything to the same standard. Many thousands of pounds. You have spent wisely, thrifted when you felt it was right to do so (kitchen - which looks gorgeous btw) but occasionally splashed a little extra on those things that make a house a home. You both have truly worked like warriors...you ARE NOW ON THE HOME STRAIGHT...12 more months? Then it's just upkeep - or the big one and do the extension!!! Very well done so far, chins up - love Wendy x

I enjoy your videos and the changes you have made to your home. The flower prints are going to be beautiful. I would recommend using acid free paper, even though it costs a bit more regular paper will yellow more over time and will also effect the flowers. Also, I think if you get paper with a bit of texture it will make the whole picture look higher quality.

I personally thank you for sharing what you have greatly achieved...it a credit to you both...yes you might have spent more ...long the way..and you I'll have also learnt to do things differently...I m truly inspired by the determination....I wonder what you will do when you have finished... please don't leave this beautiful old home...with your new adventures....soon...make your memories last as much as you can...added new surroundings... making the home liveable for many.. many more years to come...it's another piece of the history to it...x. Hi Laura and Ollie. Your stairway is looking so much better and each step is one step nearer to the finishing line! The flower pictures are so,so beautiful and I really hope they work. I framed my wedding bouquet but it was a huge failure as I didn’t dry them out 100% and they eventually went mouldy !! I think you and Ollie have been so,so inspirational in your renovations. Your patience, incredibly hard work and the many problems that you’ve had to solve along the journey may not seem worthwhile at times but you should be so very proud of all that you’ve achieved working on a tight budget and learning so much whilst doing it. No one can ever replace that feeling of pride and you will have the joy of actually spending quality time in your beautiful home once the major projects have been completed. I think you are an awesome couple and wish you every happiness.💖🌸

OK , is it worth it ? YES it's worth it it really is especially with sealing the bath room / shower I've learnt so much watching the home renovations . My new bathroom wasn't sealed as well as u did yours and lasted 2 years. when u do it right like sanding down every thing perfectly next time around it's much easier apart from looking a lot better than leaving little bits or taking short cuts. I've done all the painting in my home since we bought it 23 years ago I hate the prep but this year we got a painter in and he couldn't believe it was never done by a professional , actually I did twice get planters in I was pregnant one of the times and had to repaint the whole room myself , the other time painter had to come back probably 3 times and I also had to repaint some things. Anyway last painter was this year and he was great.
Your home is so gorgeous and I love the way u put memories around you / the house.

We roughly renovated our house 30 years ago & now it’s just me & my husband living here now, we are updating & modernising it. You’ve got PLENTY of time to do jobs & if you have kiddos they don’t give a sh*t about how long you slaved over doing a task - think crayoning the walls & putting mermaid stickers on wood!! Good enough is fine & don’t get bogged down in perfectionism. You are both doing a GREAT job! 💫💫💫

Laura, of course you are stressed out, looking how long the works are going on. But you found a level of neglect, that needs a lot of work to fix it, even if you were not perfectionists. Regarding that you can show this on RUclips is no moneterising your diys, but also encouraging your audience to stay positive with their renovation projects. And it shows us, how long things take. I'm renovating on a much smaller scale my flat in Madrid and I'm always greatful for your ideas and showing us your labour of love.

When I got married my bridesmaids took my flowers to a local woman who dried them and framed them in a large oval frame, I still have them now 30 years later, slightly browner but still beautiful.. I' e been renovating all my adult life, I had a while where I questioned it like you, getting older and tired easier, then my son and daughter moved into their own houses and I was enthused again, now I'm working on theirs and I love it. The only thing that defeats me is the garden, I'd like to go out there and relax but I never can, I see all the jobs that need doing.

Pro tip for the dried flowers: if you are going to hang them on the wall, I recommend hanging them in a darker room or hallway. Sunlight damages and fades the color of the flowers over time. If you don't mind the faded/ yellowed look, then no need to worry though!

You have done a beautiful job and should be so proud of yourselves. My hubby and I had an old wood boat that we lived aboard. We didn't dare slack off doing repairs least we lose ground to the rot. Our motto ultimately ended up "How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time." Don't get overwhelmed with the tasks that lie ahead; instead, look back periodically and be proud of the distance you've come. As my dad would say, "Keep up the good work!"

We are in our sixties and in our forth home.
Our first home the biggest thing I wanted to do was choose our own paint colors and that morphed into a wood entry floor (split entry) and a tiled bathroom floor.
Second house was painting inside and out including painting our huge shop a deep purple (😊), adding a deck around the hot tub and tongue and groove oak floors throughout the house.
Third house two kitchen renovations and taking the house down to the studs to re-insulate (that pink stuff shrinks over time) and putting shingle siding up.
Fourth house floor to ceiling bookcases next to the refaced fireplace and in my office, painted the exterior and now I’m stalled because my body can’t take the hard work anymore.
My husband (a big city boy from Bangkok) learned the skills along side me even though this is not his idea of a good time but he likes the results.
I watch the two of you doing all this work knowing how hard it can be and applaud you for taking it on. It is turning out beautifully, you have wonderful taste.

I was able to keep the boutonniere of my husband from our wedding and simply glued it into a square IKEA Ribba frame, that has a bit of depth - so I didn't press it but just glued it on and closed it. The flowers became dry on themselves and yes the colors faded but it's still a beautiful reminder of our wedding day and I'm glad I did it!
P.S. I love your channel and your style, please keep going - but yeah in the end even we as viewers don't know if you worked on 100% quality or only on "get it done" quality :P that is something you have to decide for yourself. I would say it's worth it. This channel brings me so much joy!

We used to make artwork with flowers and greenery when I was a kid and we always finished the dried flowers with a super hold hairspray. Make sure, that they are in the right shape because you can not move them afterwords. just lay them on a flat piece of paper and spray them generously. let them dry and coat the other side ( you can always do two coats). be careful after because they can easily break but put them in the frames and you have no problems!

I have watched you both evolve and progress in your skill and approach as you plan and renovate. While you have always been thoughtful and willing to step back and reassess the plan, etc. I think the most significant thing you have both learned as crucial is time. I have noticed that you both learned that sometimes you need to take a break and step away from a project as big as this one. You’ve learned that you can renew the excitement and energy you felt initially by giving yourselves permission to stop for a time. That is a lesson that is hard won and one which you will benefit from for the rest of your lives. Love you both!!!

Potentially you could have done a much quicker job, like with the downstairs, but I know people who have had large renovations done professionally on their 60s house costing well over a hundred thousand pounds when they moved in, and they're still having to do DIY work on the house 6 years later, the roof leaks, the extension roof leaks, the skylight leaks, the bathroom shower leaks, the paint chips off the walls because it used cheap paint on old plaster etc! Every year is another set of things to fix. The peace of mind knowing each part of your house is done properly to a standard you like, and when it brakes, you know what went into it, and how to fix it. Hopefully you won't sell the house anytime soon, and i like to think it's an ultimate relationship builder for the two of you, which is an investment that will last for decades x

I think it’s okay to feel exasperated with renovations, they’re pretty tiring, and maybe his comment is a perspective to take into account. There are efficiencies he can suggest that might be a nice balance to your sense of perfectionism, taking from both attitudes will help you to move perhaps at a faster pace but also create a home you love. That being said, this has been an experience for you and others, and sharing that experience is certainly of value to you and to your audience. So perhaps you won’t get your money out of it in selling your home, but it’s a journey you went on and it created a different revenue stream for you (or at least I hope this is generating revenue for you, you create amazing content!)
So maybe it’s not always ‘worth it’ to be perfectionists to such a degree…but the whole journey and all your discoveries have certainly been worth it :)

We are also renovating and are perfectionists at times. Somethings you do as a labour of love knowing you won't get the time back in a monetary form. That's okay. We love our homes.
But I do see you sometimes get things done because something done is better than having something perfect. For example, your garden shed. I'm sure there are things that handyman has done in his home that is perfect and some that aren't. For us it was our basement storage room. The floor isn't perfect and there's a lot of caulk on those walls but no one will ever know and it's a lovely storage room.
Also, keep in mind you didn't buy a home that was built 5 years prior by some builder. This is a century home. There are many things that need repairing and doing it right and taking your time is often better than what a handyman would do. It's give and take.
Remember, you have your whole life to settle into that home. Take your time and savour every moment together ❤

Yes it's worth it! We've renovated two of our homes, one of them is a home we rent out (we tried to do just as good a job on that as the renovations on our own home) and the other was our family home which we have since sold. When you love the homes and you are going to live in them money is somewhat irrelevant. I can tell you though, we definitely made money on the one we sold. What you are saving on is the wages of someone else to do it. If it is something you enjoy doing you don't necessarily expect to get paid for it, of course if its a chore and you hate it you are never going to get the wages for what time you've spent on it. But if its what you love doing and you do that instead of say playing golf (which you don't get paid for either) its a win, win. Also, perfectionism shoudln't ever be considered a negative. I could never do a shoddy job and I can tell you that a lot of tradesman we have worked with over the years don't care like you do, it also isn't their home and they don't have a vested interest in it. Isn't it sad though that they admit that they don't do a very good job.....no wonder we are always talking about the quality of yesteryear. And a big, fat, yes to a utility room video. We are about to reno our laundry after 15 years and am super excited to get started....we will be doing it ourselves too, apart from the obvious.

I think you'll feel so much better when another one of your projects is completed, especially one that is final like the stairs or the primary suite! Don't get me wrong, you guys have made amazing progress and organised a wedding, but working on something for so long and so thoroughly means you haven't had a win in a while, maybe that's what you need and the stairs will give you just that soon 🙂

I think it's fantastic that this handyman gave you your own (self-proclaimed) needed reality check on the perfectionist level. Sometimes all we need is a different perspective to suddenly get the balance we've been looking for. I'm sure it feels like a miniscule, yet monumental, shift to be able to reorder how you think of it and to give yourself some grace while still creating a space for yourselves. Bravo!! It's so hard as humans to look at ourselves and think "I could have done this a tad differently" and to share that is astounding- emotional growth and personal boundaries is sexy 💪💪💪

One thing that you don't mention whilst reflecting on what you have done is that for much of the time there was a pandemic happening. I feel like the renovation has also given you both purpose during a difficult time. It breaks my heart to hear you sound dejected. Maybe you could have done things in a different way but you have been learning so many skills. He is making his judgement based on the knowledge that he learned over years. You two were total amateurs at the start and it is amazing to see how you have problem solved over the years. My sister and her fiancé renovated a house, they literally took everything out except the four walls, even the first floor. They still got married. You and Ollie are probably much stronger as a couple for all that you are doing together. So many things are not quantifiable.
One thing I am looking forward to is seeing you put those spindles back in place - it terrifies me when I see them missing. When I bought my house in Liverpool the spindles were missing on the top landing. They had to be replaced to get the mortgage.

You can never put a price on the pride, enjoyment and happiness a home you have renovated yourself brings you. This handyman is speaking from a purely money-making perspective. Trades usually work for others so, to them, everything is profit and loss.

Framing anything that you want to last requires acid free backing materials. Don’t use the paper or cardboard that comes with the frames. It isn’t acid free unless specifically noted. Yes…it does make a difference. You can order acid free (or archival) materials from Amazon such as tissue paper, clothing boxes, or foam boards (which is what you want), or white/colored paper to mount your flowers on. Check for vids on how to.

No disrespect but a handyman is not a professional plus your standard and perfectionism will never change just because somebody has a different view on it. You guys like pretty, quality clothes and furnitures; that won’t change overnight either. My beautiful grandma would tell that you that you can buy a bar of soap for 20p and it is not worth to buy the fancy stuff you just bought, she would show you her amazing skin trying to convince you. I bet you would smile and next day still spend the premium for the soap which brings YOU joy, in YOUR home.
I think you only doubt yourself now because you are getting a bit tired of the renovation process and you just want to get things done. Changing the way you do things now is not a good idea, you would know and notice every imperfection and it would bug you, especially now when most of the house is done in such a high standard.
Please don’t change the way you do things, you will never see things with a handyman eyes. ;) Be patient with yourself. No point to do an ok job and later regret it.
You guys are awesome, very inspiring. Please do not doubt yourselves .
I do not think you will sell this house but in case you do, by the time you will have so many followers and all of us will know the quality work you did with this house (even inside the walls) If you sell it one day I am convinced that because you documented most of the renovation, you will get a premium price for it. Maybe you are not a professional but the quality speaks for itself. 😉
Well done for everything you do. Love you guys ❤

Laura, just to say I am sure your builder is a nice bloke and so on but it’s just one opinion. I was once made to feel like I made somehow the wrong choice by one builder (who was criticizing another builder’s work) and overall it turned out to be right. Also my bro is a builder and he says historically things have been done to different levels of quality at different times. These days a lot of building seems to be done with short term thinking. You guys are trying to make the house long term healthy. I mean maybe there‘s some truth to it but it’s just one perspective xxx

Laura don’t leave the flowers to long in the Crystal it will take some of the colour out the longer you leave them . Least you know it’s a good job on your house and no corners cut all your lovely hard work will pay off in the end then you have to start all over again 😂😂

I can sometimes hear in the way you say things that you’re worried about offending anyone or coming off ungrateful if you complain about stuff. But just a little reassurance for you, you’re allowed to be wealthy and lucky and able and still be tired or not enjoy things. It’s ok! You do a great job of being very polite and humble though.
