      Have you got a video on etiquette, for example, if someone lets you through or out of a junction, should you react to headlight flashing, what should you do if you are letting someone else through or out of a junction, how should you thank them when they do. I'm under the impression that you cant use your lights to signal to someone to come through or out of a junction or to say thanks. Clarification would be great, thanks.

    I have found most mini-roundabouts, with the painted island on the floor are situated in housing estates possibly on bus routes. Typically they only have three exits in total. Previously they might have been a main road with a side road. On approach when designated as a mini-roundabout, the layout is sort of side road on left, side road on right or a T junction. Once you establish its a mini-roundabout of this layout on approach you can think which group of traffic you give way to and crucially which group will be blockers based on ROUNDABOUT PRIORITIES. The side left or right on what might have been previously a side road makes a lot of difference as does if you are approaching what previously might have been the T junction. Learners do not like emerging in the T layout just giving way to the right when they see traffic on the left as it feels wrong which it is not as ROUNDABOUT PRIORITIES prevail. The visualisation on all smallish roundabouts helps with the identifying vehicles you give way to and those which will help by blocking. At a busy roundabout if you are waiting this needs identifying to help you launch safely onto it.

    Thought it would be a good idea to watch this. When approaching a closed mini roundabout, I was going straight ahead. But I stopped due to there being parked cars at the right, near the roundabout. So then I edged forward then went straight ahead. However the motorist behind me appeared to be annoyed that I stopped and was waving hand gestures when I checked my rear mirror. So it's made me doubt myself. But watching this video is reassuring. Many thanks 😊

Although was keeping an eye on him ( facing driver going straight over ) he indicated right mid point of the Mini exactly as we were about to pass each other within 1 metre. Forced ankers on. No amount approach speed anticipation defensive driving can stop this.

    Great video! I’d like to add a couple of points:
    A) When approaching a mini r’bout and there’s a car waiting at each entrance but your entrance is clear, do your checks, slow down and keep checking by all means but keep moving if possible. If you stop to give way to vehicle on the right, then all vehicles will be waiting for each other to move off making it a tricky situation to enter; and
    B) at a double mini r’bout when the second one is on your left, as well as looking to the right it’s a good idea to look to the left before you enter the first r’bout just in case there’s a queue for the second r’bout.

      Yes you do if they are about to enter the roundabout. As soon as they enter they become your right. But don’t give way to them if they are still a distance from the roundabout on the approach and it is obvious that you will be across the roundabout before they get to the give way line.

    2:51 do you give way to the bus cos the size of the car or any other way has to be given way?

    • @keith6400
      @keith6400 3 года назад

      You need to give way to a bus coming from this direction if it were imminently turning right, across the front of you but not if it were continuing straight ahead. In this case the bus is at a bus stop and passengers are still boarding. If it signalled right and moved off there might still be time for you to continue and turn left at the mini-roundabout. The dilemma is whether you think it is signalling to move off or move off and turn right. The question is: will my actions cause the bus to either slow or change direction as a result of what my vehicle does. This is a yes/no/don't know question. Yes or don't know will mean you need to stop at the give way line.

    On a mini roundabout if you can't see to your right, can you edge your car forward?

  • @airportdocumentaries
    @airportdocumentaries 5 лет назад +1

    The highway code says giveaway to the right. Does it really mean giveway to vehicles approaching the roundabout from the right, or does it actually mean giveway to vehicles already on the roundabout coming towards you from the right? I say this because it doesn't make sense to wait for someone approaching the giveaway line to your right just so you can giveway to them. Surely if I enter the roundabout first he needs to giveway to me because I am already on the roundabout?

    • @JamesTravis
      @JamesTravis  5 лет назад

      Giveway to vehicles either waiting to emerge or about to emerge on your right. If the vehicle on your right is approaching, but is a distance away and you are at roundabout and can safely enter without effecting the vehicles on your right then proceed.

    • @JamesTravis
      @JamesTravis  7 лет назад +1

      frank spencer most people would not try it on a small mini for you tend to not make it and either hit kerb or do a 3 point turn on mini and look like a fool. But on some of the larger minis it is possible but do it slow, other drivers are not expecting it and might drive into you.

    • @Realpoweronearth
      @Realpoweronearth 7 лет назад

      I went round a mini roundabout on my motorbike I indicated but still got beeped at so im not sure whether it was allowed unless the driver was not expecting me to do that so where did I go wrong if I did go wrong??

    • @JamesTravis
      @JamesTravis  7 лет назад

      Not expecting it.

    • @keith6400
      @keith6400 3 года назад +1

      I think unless the mini roundabout is in a city centre location where a lot of drivers do this because of one way streets and a road layout that means this is a popular viable short cut, not many drivers will be expecting this. I think the Highway Code discourages it. The problem for most vehicles is it is too tight to do what is effectively a U-turn. However if you have a small enough vehicle and decide on this as you circumnavigate up to exit 3, intent on exiting at 4, it is helpful if you dwell a bit before going past 3 and slowly pass 3. People can then accommodate this more easily as they only need abou 2/3 seconds to adjust to an unexpected move.

      @@ado543 No, the ped must be on the crossing: "Every pedestrian, if he is on the carriageway within the limits of a Zebra crossing, before any part of a vehicle has entered those limits, shall have precedence within those limits over that vehicle and the driver of the vehicle shall accord such precedence to any such pedestrian."
      Which does not mean 'half on' (i.e. 1 foot).
      There is no requirement for a driver to reduce his speed just because there are peds standing on the footway.
      As for the relative positions of the vehicle and crossing 'limits', For the purpose of complying with the crossing, the vehicle has to be stopped before the give way line - which may be up to 3 metres away from the crossing limits - so if the ped is on the crossing after the vehicle has passed the give way line, the vehicle has effectively passed the crossing and is not required to stop. If the vehicle cannot be stopped, as required, by the driver, it cannot be the driver's fault. This issue may occur at any vehicle speed.
      It comes down to the ped being reckless in indicating their intentions. They should stand on the carriageway and wait to ensure the vehicles give way to them before continuing to cross.

      @@ado543 You don't understand the law then if you think that. Let's work through the process.
      If a ped passes between parked cars on a 2-way road and see no vehicle coming from the right but one or more coming from the left, he can continue into the road to wait for the vehicles to pass. If, while waiting, he is hit by a vehicle coming from the right, the driver of that vehicle will be at fault.
      In the UK peds rule. Except on highways where they're banned - like motorways.

    Let's have an example that I had on my last lesson.
    I came up to a mini roundabout, and there were 3 cars waiting, all at the other 3 exits, who would have the right of way in that circumstance? Everyone had someone on their right hand side. So my instructor said it then depends on who has what signal on, I was making a right and had the right of way, BTW

    • @JamesTravis
      @JamesTravis  5 лет назад

      Good question. If everyone had someone on their right, and then all wanted to turn right, then it’s a catch 22 situation. Someone has to be brave and make a move.

    At 5.00, you entered the roundabout with a give way sign on your right, if a car was at that give way sign who has the right of way because the highway code say's give way to your right UNLESS road signs or traffic lights state otherwise.

    • @JamesTravis

      Hi, the car on your right would have the right of way.

    • @lesgibson9152
      @lesgibson9152 5 лет назад

      So what is the point of having a give way sign in the first place if they don't have to give way to the road without a give way sign ?

    • @JamesTravis
      @JamesTravis  5 лет назад

      The car on your right would give way to their right. On this roundabout a giveway road marking is in place because it is a straight road with a mini roundabout on it. So the giveway road lines are asking the driver to be prepared to giveway to cars in front that could turn right.

    • @lesgibson9152

      In my town there is a mini roundabout with a give way sign on my side of the road, a road without a give way sign on my right and a road straight in front of me without a give way sign. Why would their be a sign if everyone knows to give way to the right ?

    • @JamesTravis
      @JamesTravis  5 лет назад

      It could be a few reasons. One could be the drivers on the road have not given way in the past and an accident has happened, so the sign was put up, will stand out more to giveway to your right.
      Some mini roundabouts are not as obvious to spot on approach, so the sign is there to help drivers to slow down and give way to the right.

    We have a lot of mini roundabouts in my town, Sometimes there are cars at every entry. Who has the right of way.?

    • @JamesTravis
      @JamesTravis  5 лет назад +1

      That’s a good question. If you arrive at a mini roundabout and all entrances have cars on wanting to entry, it’s a catch 22 situation. Everyone is giving way to their right and usually one of the cars will make a move. Sometimes it’s the first car to arrive will make the move. Sometimes you can spot a driver moving slowly to make the first move.

    • @keith6400

      Many city centres have mini roundabouts or small roundabouts in the centre where queues of traffic build up on each approach. The easiest way out of the situation in my opinion is to try to calculate a good blocker situation. Two consecutive cars turning in a particular direction or a bus turning may beneficially hold up traffic for about 10 seconds allowing you to move forward confidently. It is a question of thinking where would a suitable blocker have to come from and which way would it need to be turning and then look out for that assuming a normal safe from the right situation does not occur beforehand.

      Hi, on a mini roundabout you signal on approach to either go left or go right. You don’t signal to left to exit the mini roundabout, you will find you don’t have time.

    @12 minutes "The traffice coming up the hill will give way to you. You give way to the traffic on your immediate right" ... except the junction you were at had a Give Way sign, which means in addition to traffic from the right, you must give way to traffic on the major road. In this instance that is the traffic coming up the hill. You should have stopped and given way to them.
    Despite that, good video with a thumbs up from me.

    where two cars meet at 6o clock and 12o clock. the one turning right should give way to the car going straight on. there is extra give way sign and triangle. cars going straight ahead always has priority whether it's a normal t junction, box junction, traffic lights unless it as a filter light. you are driving across their path.

    • @JamesTravis
      @JamesTravis  7 лет назад +1

      Hi, you give way to your right. So if two cars meet at the same time in opposite directions and one is turning right, then the other will give way.

    • @jamesdixon4244
      @jamesdixon4244 7 лет назад

      It should be a Mexican stand off. Both cars should give way to one another. That's why they put extra give way signs to emphasis that you give way first then treat it as a roundabout second. That's why the give way sign is always above the mini roundabout sign. If the car is already on the roundabout and is turning right yes you have to give way.
