How to Shift Quicker Using a Strain Gauge - Jay's Tech Tips #34 - Real Street Performance

- We get a lot of questions about how we get our transmissions to shift fast in the drag cars, and how to carry power into the next gear without it dropping off in the gear change.
We accomplish this using sensors to tell the ECU when a gear change is starting to happen. Then the ecu either retards the ignition timing, or cuts the ignition all together. This slows the engine down during the gear shift and allows the transmission gears to line up easier, allowing a quicker gear change.
There are different ways to accomplish this depending on what type of transmission you have. In today's tech tip we will go over these different methods, and how you can use them to make quicker, more consistent, and safer shifts.

I would also add a switch either on the gear lever itself or steering wheel to engage/disengage the strain guage ignition cut system for a street car.
Great tips to help you shift like a BOSS!! Big thanks to Jay and Real St Performance!!
Keep em comin
I guess im asking randomly but does anybody know a tool to log back into an instagram account??
I somehow forgot my account password. I would love any help you can give me!
@Grant Joseph instablaster :)
@Trevor Benjamin Thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im in the hacking process atm.
Takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
@Trevor Benjamin it worked and I now got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thank you so much you saved my ass !
@Grant Joseph no problem =)
Love these tech tip videos!
Would it work for a stock Honda b series? Sound like it would save the trans
these vídeos are really nice 👍💪
yepp, they are siq.
Is this acuated similar to the no lift shift that there doing on the s550s
loving the informative videos guys keep it up!
Have you ever seen the strain gauge approach used on a synchromesh transmission to eliminate use of the clutch during shifts?
+Sean Deisch It doesn't work like that...
There's two things in this video. A clutch sensor, which kills the engine as you shift normally; and a strain gauge, that kills the engine as you use the shifter. Dogboxes don't require clutching.

This is brilliant.
integra lol i knew that interior looked familiar. my s300 has full throttle shift but i didnt wire it up
Do you have a suggestion on a Strain Gauge for road racing that does not cost an arm and a leg ? or better still does RSP sell one?
+Andrew Murray Fuel Tech has a knob that has a strain gauge in it. It's cheaper than the conventional route.
thanks
Good job
Thanks for the tip
do you have to use a dog box with the strain gauge ?
I have the same question... I would believe so because you would probably damage your synchronizers by pulling on the shifter in anticipation for the shift in a regular manual trans.
You should watch the video agian guys, all was explained
Try shifting a synchronized transmission with a strain gauge and ignition cut. MAYBE, if it were straight cut gears you could get away with it for a little while, but if you try that on factory helical cut gears, they won't last very long.
I'm here from Rob Dahm's video because I had no idea what a strain gauge shifter was.
I've got a 80/20 street car and weekend drag car. It's a mild fox body mustang with a t5 w/gforce gearset (cable clutch) would I need to convert to a hydraulic clutch? Or would would it be out of the question since it's not a dedicated drag car
+Kyle Shaw How the clutch is actuated has nothing to do with the strain gauge. You'd need to have a ECU that can do gear cut and preferably power reduction on the gear change to lower the shock when the engine turns back on. Basically it would cut 80% ignition to allow the gear change then lower the level of ignition cut back to 0% over time to lessen the shock.
thanks
+Jay Meagher ok perfect, what management to you use on your mustang? I can't count how many times I've watched the build on your car. Thats the perfect setup
does it work on a manual supra?
Hahahahahahahaha, good one
WANT! My 1990 300ZX Twin Turbo (5 speed) is pushing between 6-650 RWHP, would Strain Gauge be a good option for my car?
Michael Sherwood it's good for any car with a dog box
when you were shifting in the intro you looked like you were going from floor board to radio and back. long shifts
do you have a email?
+John Vaillant yes sir! jay@realstreetperformance.com

fucking awesome.
where can i apply for real street drag car driver !!! and part time mechanic lol
Me like!!

"Tran-mission" jays way to pronouce it.
