wintermidnight and she had her powers taken away because saving Kate was not relevant to the mission of keeping Chloe alive? That's an interesting theory
So Chloe is the main protagonist even though we don't play as her,but Max is a supporting character but we play as her? huh I never thought of it that way, it's a interesting dynamic though its mind blowing.
It's just a different perspective. Chloe's actions and wants are what move the plot as she has agency over the story. Max is our POV, and since Chloe is the one growing through the plot she's driving she's the main character.
+BloodCroft in many books another person (can be a secondary character or a witness) watches the story and goes along the protagonist, it's pretty common but in videogames isn't wich is cool that dontnod experimented with it
I know this is late, but the caption "ignore the quiet sobbing" is probably the best tagline you could give Life is Strange. At least, that's all I know I was doing while playing.
You know , with all the cheesy / weird lines in this story , I'm surprised there hasn't been a "The Price was right" line after Chloe got something right
I feel the question is more "why does Chloe have to die?" that why she has to live. What happens when she dies? What would the reaction be? I feel that is the only situation/alternative/narrative we haven't looked at yet. If Chloe is mean to be dead, why is she meant to be dead? What consequences are meant to happen? In some way Chloies death is Maxes road to start to stand up for herself, and start to focus more on what she wants. Max is a dreamer, a follower, an observer and a judger. Her character flaw is that she's not able to take care of herself. That's maybe why she's part of the Vortex club in the alternative universe. I feel this story is about Max growing up, and become independent Chloe is always in the way for her to achieve this goal.
MarkFilipAnthony you're right, Max is doing nothing in the game except following Chloe's decisions, she has no objective, I mean, she never asked herself what else can I do with my powers? Which powers I can still achieve? DAMN IT, she even forgot about the tornado, I mean she is doing absolutely nothing to stop the tornado, why don't get back to Chicago with Chloe? There's a TORNADO coming to your fuckuing city!
Jodie Holmes That's not what I am stating. It is a natural response to want to save the ones one care about, but it is the way she's doing it that is the reasoning in why Chloe "must die". Since she altered time and space, she prevented an event from happening that was (according to how things where lined up in time), supposed to happen. But since it doesn't happen, it seems like the universe itself is trying to correct that error, by finding other ways to have the same outcome. (sorry for my long comment) The only way (in my opinion) that Max can prevent Chloe to die, is to go back in a time and alter the things that lined up to caused her death. In my personal logic Nathan is the clue. If she's able to prevent him being harassed by his family to do bad things, she will be able to prevent the moment Nathan is pressured to kill Chloe out of fear. Sadly the universe might still find a way to harass Nathan, and/or make Jefferson a bad guy, but this will avoid the moment Chloe was in danger in the first place. But maybe there is another event Max can change in time, to prevent everything to happen at all. I'm guessing something about the origin of Prescott family's lineage, the one moment a person decides between doing a good thing, or doing a bad thing, that determent what the Prescott's choices and direction will be in the future. Maybe just altering a simple butterfly waving the wrong direction with its wings
This was by far my favorite theory from Mari, you seriously analyze every detail, thankyou!,and maybe the game developers WANT us to believe chloe is destined for "death", and death only. But you can see pass that! You open my mind to new things that I wasn't even thinking of.. I seriously live for this channel..I love both you and stacy(p.s. can't wait to hear hers too!)
I think it adds to this theory when you learn that in Native American mythology, the deer (Max's spirit animal) often serves as a messenger. Because of that status, they often play a lesser role in tribe myths. An apocalypse is coming, and Max is the messenger sent to warn Chloe, the true hero of the story. And knowing what she knows about the events and the effects of Max's powers is what ultimately leads to Chloe volunteering to sacrifice herself for Arcadia Bay. Max is less of character, and more a force of nature that Chloe directs. The only true choice you get as Max is the choice to save Arcadia Bay, or save Chloe.
Hi, it’s the mythology guy again. First off as usually I liked the video, but that is sort of a given by now. Second, I really like the idea of Chloe being the hero. It actually follows the heroes’ journey rather well. The heroes’ journey is a pattern of story telling that is repeated by basically every culture for every kind of story. It (really basically) is someone who is born into unusual circumstances, is banished or made unwelcomed in their homeland (or home in this case), has a prophecy or great destiny the must fulfill, is set on some form of quest or mission, and must die. Not permanently of course, they enter into the realm of death and return bringing with them some type of higher knowledge or wisdom. This story is echoed in everything from biblical stories, mythological pieces, Harry Potter, The lion king, Star Wars, and so many more. It is a story ark that is sort of ingrained in the human psyche (and just happens to be the focus of my thesis paper). So yeah I think Chloe really could be the true hero of the tale. She fits most of the qualifications of the hero’s journey. Hell she has died way more times than most other heroes, and she returns with a higher knowledge (basically she is told what the other time line held). Any way hope this was entertaining; now back to the terrifying notion of writing a thesis paper… Really hope I can tie this game into it somehow.
I love this theory, but I have some arguments: 1. Max isn't necessarly following Chloe's path since she took quite a little bit of her time to also save Kate, and wants to serve justice to Kate. Therefore, she doesn't only want to find Rachel for Chloe, but because she has a sense of justice too. Of course, Chloe lead the way of their mission, but Max wanted to find out what happened to Kate either way. 2. I don't get why you are saying that Max didn't have her powers in the alternate universe. She can rewind to talk to William about the Paris trip, she can change her minf about killing Chloe or not, and most importantly, she traveled back to the picture. 3. Mr.Jefferson killed Chloe simply for protection, since she had a gun and turned around after Max's warning. Nathan also tried to drug her so that they can take pictures of her, they didn't want to kill her even before.
Alternate max and the conscience that alters the timeline are separate, if that makes sense. Also, you can read max's journal in the alternate timeline and there is no mention of powers at all.
Tijey Ri When Mari is talking about Max not having her rewind abilities in the alternative universe, she's talking about Alternative Max, not our Max. From reading the journals in the Alt Universe, we see that the Max in that universe didn't have time-traveling powers. The only reason that our Max was able to use her powers in the Alt Universe is because she kind of inhabited the body of Alternative Max until her purpose in that Universe was fulfilled.
Yes, but this isn't alternate max. This is the max that kept William from dying altering the timeline. So the max in the alternate universe had no time travel, but the conscience of time travelling max altered the timeline and took over. So in the alternate universe Max did not have any powers until this max took over. After Max left by re-altering the timeline, that universe was locked and max no longer had the powers. I hope that made sense, time travel is complicated!
+Tijey Ri Chloes pics are probably the work of Nathan only since he tooked her to his room and Chloe escaped, if Mark was there the scene would be different
Guys. What if Chloe is the protag of the game, and we are the "Game Over. Would you like to load your last save?" mechanism. Or something. Like, we are the save and reload system.
Someone noticed that something was wrong with the universe no matter what. Nothing to do with Max's powers or Chloe being alive. I felt like everyone was missing stuff, but of course Mari would notice it - our LiS mastermind!
Cool theory. When I first played LIS, I actually thought that the storm was due, to the Prescotts, performing some weird time experiment, which went wrong. Because, the fact that they had paid for the dark room, which was a storm bunker: and also filled it with months of food. It gave the impression: that they already knew the storm was coming: and had the bunker in place, so they could stay safe. Also, I think there is more to Samuel. He seems like Father Time: the way he knows everything. He could be there in a good sense, to guide Max, so she can become more competent with her rewind powers. He might be a kind of lord of time. Or, he could actually be the evil side you are talking about, which is manipulating things around, to kill off Chloe, or cause other chaos. After all, you would never suspect Samuel, to be bad! And, he did have Rachel's scarf, for some reason: and sounded a bit resistant, when you asked, why he had pictures of Rachel. Which was the only time, he appeared to close down the conversation with you. Plus, he has his squirrel spies watching everything..
So basically you're saying it's a 2nd person story, Like the Great Gatsby for example. That's makes sense...What I' thinking is that Max was given her powers for the purpose of stopping the photography ring, but I can't explain why or how. Or the storm either.
Gangrel115 I was scrolling through the comments hoping someone would bring up The Great Gatsby before me. I don't personally like the book, but it's a great example of the narrator not being the "main" character, and acting as a witness and an assistant to the real main character's story.
Gangrel115 I think the weather phenoms have more to do with nature itself lashing out at the horrible things that have been done to the environment around Arcadia Bay. If you talk to every person and go through every little thing, it is brought up in the game a lot that the Prescott family has all but poisoned and destroyed Arcadia Bay. The fisherman for example (in chapter 3 if I remember correctly) states that there aren't any more fish in Arcadia Bay. He basically says that the Prescott industries have fished so excessively, that they have in essence, destroyed the water ecosystem. The old homeless woman behind the place where Joyce works tells you that the Prescotts have been there for a while and that they have been pretty much poisoning Arcadia Bay. Another thing that I found curious was that in chapter 4, when you are in Nathan's room going through his emails and such, we can basically get an idea that Nathan was complaining to his father about the school and the people in Arcadia Bay. I'm not quite sure of the wording, but his father says something along the lines of something big is going to happen and that Arcadia Bay is in need of an enema. I can't help but get the feeling that the Prescott's have that bunker for a reason. Maybe they are responsible for the storm in some way. Maybe it is something they have planned and are manipulating nature into lashing out in the worst way possible. Maybe there are other driving forces that a pushing back and Chloe and Max are the ones who have to set things right. Whatever the case, I am really excited to see where chapter 5 leads us.
Interesting interpretation on Chloe's role! I can't wait till we find out in the final episode. I'm really going to miss your analyses on this game, I've never had so much fun watching game theory videos. I think what resonated with me was how emotionally aware and considerate you both were through this series. Nobody else delved into the emotional impact Max's (and others) actions have on both the characters and the player quite like you two did. I found you both through this game, and I'll be sticking around for your other let's plays. Thanks for a great experience!!
I love your very many view points. I've seen other playthroughs that don't appreciate the alternative universe because you never change the storyline for the better. But I think you explain its purpose perfectly.
Just for the record, in physics what you described is "the many worlds" interpretation of "the collapse of the way function" and like all other interpretation is not a testable theory, rather one of many ways to explain the above theorised, observed and tested theory (the collapse). It is not even the most popular among physicists, the Copenhagen interpretation is.
This could be possible but I think Rachel wasnt druged by Mr.Jefferson, I think she posed for the pictures and Nathan was the druged one bc if you look close: Rachels eyes where closed and Nathan and Kathes where open. Cloe said "Maybe he gave her a shit load of money... this is something she would do" (or something in that way. Maybe Rachel isnt dead. I dont know. I'm confused 😭😂 (sorry for spelling mistakes, english isnt my first language:) )
Ales Sandra The English was good, I couldn't tell it wasn't your first language! I'm only sorry that people have to state that fact in order to stop people from attacking you, since apparently people cant read a comment and think maybe, just maybe, the person doesn't speak English first. Funny, considering those people likely cannot speak the language of the commenter they insult. But that's the internet I guess. If I may, my thoughts on the story; I think she (rachel) was taken like the others, only she woke up during the... "photoshoot" as the drugs ran out and she began to wake, this explains her look in the photo, she is weak and bound, but alert and angry. Anyway, she died, either one of two ways. 1. They re-dosed her with drugs when they saw she was waking up, and she overdosed and died. 2. They (Probably Jefferson) killed her, as she saw them, she knew too much and would give them away, so he kills her. (he does kill chloe, so he is willing to do it) This explains Nathan, he is so messed up, why? because he didnt want Rachel to die, yet he was there when she did, but Jefferson is making him keep quiet. He is feeling extreme guilt. Both 1 and 2 explain this, either the more unlikely 1, Nathan was the one who over-dosed her, or the more likely 2, Nathan either saw Jefferson kill Rachel, or Jefferson made Nathan kill Rachel. He then likely made him hide her body. Nathan, as we can guess, was blackmailed into this whole thing, though he isnt really a part of it, his job is simply to bring the girl there, and drug her so she is unconscious when he does. He already feels bad but has no choice, with his Father, Jefferson and maybe the principal forcing him to do it. When Rachel is murdered, he snaps, but he is again forced into silence. He is filled with guilt and remorse, and I think personally, Jefferson has killed him as he is a "loose tie" and he is the reason Max and Chloe got so close, so he killed him. My thoughts for that are he is not in the end of episode 4, AND Jefferson has his phone when he tricks you. Nathan messed up, he was unstable, he was giving them away, so he had to be "removed" Thats my take and theory on it!
+Ales Sandra You know what? A part of me (this could be wrong and never come true) felt that what if the real villain in the end is actually Rachel and she's making Jefferson do this............since what you quoted made me think that too when I played the game. Also the fact that she dumped Frank for Jefferson. So yeah.
sayounara1232 Hmm interesting. See my thought is, she was purposely getting close, to do what max and chloe are now doing. She knew SOMETHING was going on, so she got close the the "cool" kids at blackwell, likely for the vortex club, she got close to Frank when she found he is tied to this, when she had what she needed she moved on, I though she was doing exactly what max is, investigating lead by lead until she found her answer, only she was killed right as she was close, much like chloe. But this also makes sense, it also fits the picture. I guess only time will tell. There is one thing to note, first most people say "what if the body is NOT rachel, we dont see it" fair point, but to that I wonder... there are other folders in the dark room, not just kate, rachel, and victoria... so what happened to them? are they future or past targets? Well rachel has all these missing posters right? so surely if it had happened before, there would either be other missing girls, or girls claiming the same kate did, that "something happened" So what gives? are they all future victims? No, the bunker was built well in advance, its clear this is a long running operation. Its almost like they simply disappeared. Could Rachel being the only "missing" girl have used another body to hide herself making people think she died? Maybe.
+MysteriousStranger50 Isn't it said, that Jefferson worked at an other school or as fotographer before in a bigger town? Girls, beeing drugged Would be 'usual' there. And most of the time, the victims don't even claim that they were drugged.
sayounara1232 Yes! I kinda thought the same bc BEFORE cloe got shooted ny Mr.Jefferson you can explore and on a wall where "Cloe was here" and "Rachel was here" (and If you let Max wrote it "Max was here") the "was" by Rachel is crossed and in red someone wrote "is". "Rachel is here" and next to it was "You all gonna die" Is it a warning? Did someone saw that? I WANT ANSWERS😂
***** Yes, I think Chloe dying in the bathroom is a turning point for the universe, if you look at it, the consequences of her death would be immense, Nathan would get caught, his evidence would lead us to Jefferson and Sean, Kate wouldn't die, maybe even Rachel wouldn't die, a lot of people wouldn't be involved. In the alternate universe the world is ending too, it's ending with the same reason as the original universe (William not dying had no consequences to the universe), but then again the fact that Chloe doesn't die at that point could make the storm happen. (wow sorry for some reason i thought Sam was talking to me, but the theory stays)
I remember one of the car license plates on episode two (I think) had DNNDRK, probably referring to Donnie Darko. I'm almost certain that the other license plates refer to shows or movies that the creators watched. This included TWNPKS (twin peaks) or BRKNBD (breaking bad) (which is funnily enough, on Frank's RV).
Even though the series is over, and you have already done a therory about this, but before I watched your play through and though about this by myself, I though about something: If Chloe dies so many times, maybe that's her destiny after all? To die. Max didn't get her powers to save Chloe, but to have more time to hang out with her before she was gone. Chloe got shot in the bathroom even before we got to see her again, those powers existed so that Max got a second chance. Because some of us would of liked to have a second chance to talk to those we love before they passed away, Life gave you the choice to save Chloe after all, but not without a serious sacrifice.
IS it implied that Max never got her powers in the alternate universe???? We see almost nothing of the alternate Max as she usually is besides the text messages, so I'm curious as to how you came to that conclusion. It seems completely ambiguous to me.
fizzycolalizzie I agree. How do we know alt Max doesn't have time powers? Granted, that's kind of a hard thing to find out from someone else's perspective, but still.
The thing I'm confused about that she's overlooking is the fact that Max used her powers in the alternate universe to use the photo to get back to her other one. Why was this not mentioned?
I actually sat there for a good 10 minutes after completing episode 4 trying to think of as many theories as I could to try to cope with the emotional punch to the face the ending was, and for the most part I thought of all the theories you thought of (I still watched your theory videos anyway, both to give you more views and because I enjoy them) but this theory I honestly never thought of. Fantastic video.
Oh my God I really hope you're right! I've read into so many theories and all of them usually end with either Max or Chloe having to die to save Arcadia Bay, and those don't settle right with me at all. This is the first logical theory that I've found that keeps both of them alive and able to save the day without one, or both, of them having to die to do so. I REALLY hope you're right! (no one hurts my babies)
+max i think that she was like she didnt get to travelr trought picture, she got to sleep and next morning she got to chloes house and than her other self that traveled got into her and the other one trough night and the beginning when she was with chloe doesnt exist in her mind anymore
I actually have a "Life Is Strange" theory idea for you. It's about the money that chloe took from frank. She obviously didn't take it to run away with rachel cuz if she did she would at least have half of it left or somthing. She is clearly lying to max. And she didn't use the money to buy the car acording to David's tracking skills. She doesn't have it or else you should find it since you can go through her stuff (sorry about the long comment i just couldn't resist)
Very good theory, I like it. One tiny addition though: I think alternate Max has rewind powers too. She just never discovered them, because the events in the bathroom at the beginning didn't happen.
I love your videos. And wow, we think alike. Or we share a passion for overthinking everything. Oh well. I just had a discussion with my sis and we agreed that it wouldn't make any sense to give Max powers if Chloe had to die anyway (at least without playing out her role first). We also figured out Jefferson's ... let's say second job as well, using pretty much the same clues as you. I love games that make you twist your brain to try and figure out the pieces. Can't wait to play ep.5! Keep up your work, you rule.
Awesome theory once again! This is going to make the final confrontation that much more epic. Chloe facing the enemies of Arcadia Bay with Max at her side. :D
You just blew my mind... And you totally convinced me! I was one of those who thought that chloe had to die and that was her destiny... but her ''destiny'' is twisted so max has to assist chloe in fixing the unsiverse and setting ''destiny'' on its right course x______x *falls over*
The lycris of the music at the ending of episode 2 says: "digging like you can burry something that cannot die." especially when we see jefferson and wells at that right moment. Could it be something?
I love this theory, especially because of the strong emphasis in the story on Max as the superhero, Chloe as the sidekick. After seeing them casually stating their roles in basically every episode, it'd be a big shock for them to realize that the opposite was true all along.
I love your theories videos, you're amazing mary. I think that the two moon at the end of the chapter symbolize two possible reallity, one where chloé die and the other where we save her.
I agree about Arcadia Bay feeling, as Samuel says, and this theory fits in perfectly with how I've felt about Max and Chloe's role this whole time. I could never have explained it so eloquently as Mari, though. Another point I'm not sure I've heard here is that Arcadia is the name of a place in Greek mythology, this natural utopia untouched by man, and it's where the faun creature Pan lived. .... Pan Estates. I'm not sure what to do with that information.
It's very interesting. I was thinking about Chloe and her character - especially playing again the end of EP1. How weird Chloe reacts when Max finishes Chloe's sentence "Chloe: seeing you after all these years feels like... Max: Destiny?" She changed her mood so drasticly from smiling a second before to being sad and holding up her head as if she was very worried.
i love your guys theories it gives me reasons to love the game more and more, and allows me to see deeper into the story me and my friend have a few talks about these theories
I want u to know, that even if ur theories aren't right in the end, U made the game a hundred times more interesting and entertaining for me. I am a bit worried the ending won't be as epic as your theories are. Thanx again, and I'll be watching ur theory videos with until the end.
I remember after watching one of your other theories, that I realized that symbolically...Chloe was the Cat (being Dead/Alive) at least in my mind. It makes so much sense to me now that Max is the observer in that context, the one who sees the outcome, ect.
This is reminding me of Puella Magi. Homura is Max and Madoka is Chloe, Max alters and goes into different timelines to try and save Chloe like how Homura does to protect/save Madoka in PMMM.
As someone who's always in denial about my favorite characters dying (even if they do all die, why do I always pick wrong ones?) I love this theory and I'm sticking to it for a month.
This perspective is making sense. Chloe mentiones several times that Max is the Superhero and Chloes was the sidekick, the faithful choffeur. This of course gives the message to the person player that it was like that. But if you think about it - lik you did Mari - Chloe is much more pushing and energetic and has a motivation to do the things she wants to do. Maxs motivation is Chloe.
What if... the story is not about Max and her rewind powers but about Chloe learning to move on form all the hurt and pain in her life? As we see Chloe has a hard time moving on from her dad's death, Max leaving her and Rachael's disappearance. anyways great theory!
0:42 im sorry but when i realise you both crying in the background i laughed so hard. This game is a part of my life and I love it. I would love to help solve all the mysteries this game hides
Great theory guys... Never though of this before... Chloe being the main protagonist whilst Max is the observer makes total sense... Keep up the good work...
What do you think about Max's Journal? Because I'm sure Mr. Jefferson took her bag with the journal in it and in most of the pages of the diary Max talks about her powers.
So Rachel wasn't the one to give the powers to Max because I thought it because maybe Rachel had the powers and knew that the end is near and Chole was the hero and Rachel was the one to keep Chole safe so maybe Chole was the one that died so Rachel used her powers to go back and take her place. So she died and gave her powers to Max to be the protecter of Chole and Chole needs to do something to stop it like maybe sacreafice herself or something. I think that Rachel did give the powers to max because Mari said Arcadia Bay given max powers and maybe that's Rachel's spirt because there is a lot of Rachel poster of her missing that's everywhere in Arcadia bay.
I think that max got her powers only for chloe, and the fact that she can use them for other reasons are just side effects of it. max got her powers specifically to stop chloe from being shot and after that every time chloe needed help, max was there to save her. if chloe completes her quest, I think that max will lose her powers
I'm totally with you on that theory, Mari, awesome job! Ever since episode 4 I've been feeling that the whole "Max causes the storm" thing is actually a red herring and it's the Prescotts who cause it! They obviously know it is coming (hence, the bunker full of provisions and the idea of a "destiny"), so how can it be connected to Max's random gaining of those powers?
The storywriters are probably watching right now and they sitting there like: "Damn, that's some good stuff..." *erase the script and replace it with the theory* ^^ But all jokes aside ! Your analysis and theories are awsome 👍 I think all your subscribers and LiS-fans notice that you ( and also Stacy) put a lot of work into these videos. So keep up the good work guys ! Greetings from Germany :)
I find it interesting that Max has a very similar role to play as well... Max, Rockatansky anyway. They both May seem Like the "main" character (you play as Maxine in LIS, and the movie is called Mad Max) but instead are meant to be somewhat of a looking glass into these fictional worlds. It gets even more curious when they allow more of an outspoken female character to be the protag (Furiosa and chloe). I wonder if this was somewhat intentional, especially considering there is a mad max reference in LIS.
Again, great theory! It'd be pretty awesome if it turns out to be true on Ep 5. Also, While I was watching the video I noticed (specifically when Chloe is shot on EP4) the emphasis on her necklace: three bullets. How many times she is shot through the game? Yep. I hope this means this is the last time she is shot """by the universe""" and when Max, somehow, go back in time again, she'll not die anymore. AND ONE MORE THING, following this video's theory I remembered the end of Ep1 when Max has the storm vision again. Before the vision ends, we see Chloe's hand on her shoulder, but she was wearing her jacket, which she wasn't when the vision ends, leading some to believe that Chloe will be with Max on the lighthouse when the storm hits Arcadia Bay. I think this fits pretty well with Your theory :D
Some of that what you say makes sence, but you would protect your friend, if you have the power to rewind time, even if she dosen't have an objective so that part dosen't make sence at all.
Yes, please. I really needed something to give me some more hope. lol I think it could go either way--Chloe needing to die to prevent the storm, or the unnatural phenomena being separate and her being the key to saving the town. But though I'd praise the game either way, you might be able to guess which I'd prefer. Still... Hm. When I take a moment to think on it, I realize you're probably right that Max may not have gotten her powers in the other timeline, since Chloe wasn't there for her to save. In which case, the unnatural stuff may indeed be unrelated... Good.
Just before Max travels to the alternate timeline she's in her dormroom on her bed, when she wakes back up in the real world an X amount of time has passed and she's in Choles room but it would have made more sense if she woke up back in her room in her school dorm, my question is, what happened to Max for everyone else whilst we were playing as her in the other timeline...And how would think link into the next episode with the popular theory that Warren's picture can be used again?..
Chloe had the powers first in an alternate timeline/reality and did some major reworking in that timeline to throw lots of realities out of whack. The knowledge of this has bled through to the other realities and I think a lot of the graffiti we see are actually messages for others from her to let her die. Even this reality's Chloe kinda knows something is amiss but doesn't want to admit it to herself. "I have to blame someone or its all my fault". I don't think that was a throw away line. I think the thing that bonds Max and Chloe and Rachel together is the sharing in the power, but also in both Rachel and Max each using the power to try and save Chloe even though they shouldn't. I have a running doc that I'm fleshing this one out in, but yeah..thats the sorta framework. In essence the realities are bleeding together/crashing into one another/crossing causing all the odd phenomenon like the double moon, etc.
One thing I wonder - Max and Chloe sort of ended up like Rachel and Nathan did in that one picture. Maybe Nathan and Rachel stumbled upon something they shouldn't have, and Jefferson drugged Nathan and somehow killed Rachel, then buried her there?
Hey Mari, In Episode 1 of Life is Strange you can see the trailer for Episode 4 in Broke's phone in the school halls and in Episode 2 in the Science room again in Broke's phone. Also I dont think the dead body is Nathan's because it wont smell that bad and it will look like him if it was his body.
the game is over 10 months ago,but i love see your theorys n.n so magical, full of feelings, im a boy but i always cry whit this game, no matter how many times i see it before :') love to you geek n.n
Max is a gaurdian, Her true power is to protect Chloe not to rewind time and all that, but to protect Chloe.
+Paul Murphy i think so too
Paul Murphy I think this too, that the power is given to her to protect Chloe at all costs.
Yeah I agree.
Paul Murphy Maybe that's why she couldn't rewind to save Kate, because Kate wasn't relevant to Chloe.
wintermidnight and she had her powers taken away because saving Kate was not relevant to the mission of keeping Chloe alive? That's an interesting theory
Chloe Price VS the world!
"Max, I think I'm in lesbians with you."
"What?"
Would be a great AU honestly.
Chloe Price But then who'd I be?
Mark Jefferson Gideon probably.
***** you're a boss but NO EMOJI
Mark Jefferson i hate you
Mark Jefferson i hate you too too
So Chloe is the main protagonist even though we don't play as her,but Max is a supporting character but we play as her? huh I never thought of it that way, it's a interesting dynamic though its mind blowing.
It's just a different perspective. Chloe's actions and wants are what move the plot as she has agency over the story. Max is our POV, and since Chloe is the one growing through the plot she's driving she's the main character.
+BloodCroft in many books another person (can be a secondary character or a witness) watches the story and goes along the protagonist, it's pretty common but in videogames isn't wich is cool that dontnod experimented with it
it's like the Walking Dead game it's not about the guy you play It's About clementine
"We're here to witness Chloe."
Chloe: FUCKING WITNESS ME!
I know this is late, but the caption "ignore the quiet sobbing" is probably the best tagline you could give Life is Strange. At least, that's all I know I was doing while playing.
You know , with all the cheesy / weird lines in this story , I'm surprised there hasn't been a "The Price was right" line after Chloe got something right
Lily Potter Maybe one day!
Chloe's dad says that in the alternate timeline if you talk to him
Lily Potter Maybe I'll add a bitch at the end for emphasis.
Chloe Price Great idea, sista
i think that happens in before the storm
Man i hope I dosent gonna end up in a time loop
Max!! vive me your powers to kill the world!!!!
Max!! give me your powers to kill the world!!!!
If you swear you only kill the haters and the terrorists.
Max Caulfield hell no, that would mean I would see your face over and over again... Nightmare! You better fix this mess, Max Caulfield!
Max Caulfield It's gonna end up like the ending of The Butterfly Effect. Kappa
MarkFilipAnthony You're missing the part where Chloe always encourages me to come out of my shell.
Max Caulfield Of course, but are you doing it?
MarkFilipAnthony you're right, Max is doing nothing in the game except following Chloe's decisions, she has no objective, I mean, she never asked herself what else can I do with my powers? Which powers I can still achieve? DAMN IT, she even forgot about the tornado, I mean she is doing absolutely nothing to stop the tornado, why don't get back to Chicago with Chloe? There's a TORNADO coming to your fuckuing city!
She can't just leave everyone to die...
(sorry for my long comment)
The only way (in my opinion) that Max can prevent Chloe to die, is to go back in a time and alter the things that lined up to caused her death.
This is by far my favorite theory.
I love this theory, but I have some arguments:
Awkward Sparkles you can rewind while looking for her morphine and to change your decision about killing her or not though.
Tijey Ri
When Mari is talking about Max not having her rewind abilities in the alternative universe, she's talking about Alternative Max, not our Max.
This is so deep and insightful, I could hear the passion in your voice
Great theory, Mari :)
0:50 got me crying so hard during the LP. Just the combination of how Max talked to Chloe and the music and it's just sad and :(
I love your very many view points.
If I may, my thoughts on the story;
I think she (rachel) was taken like the others, only she woke up during the...
(he does kill chloe, so he is willing to do it)
This explains Nathan, he is so messed up, why? because he didnt want Rachel to die, yet he was there when she did, but Jefferson is making him keep quiet.
Nathan messed up, he was unstable, he was giving them away, so he had to be "removed"
Thats my take and theory on it!
Well rachel has all these missing posters right? so surely if it had happened before, there would either be other missing girls, or girls claiming the same kate did, that "something happened"
So what gives? are they all future victims?
"Rachel is here" and next to it was "You all gonna die"
Is it a warning? Did someone saw that? I WANT ANSWERS😂
Have you ever watched Donnie Darko? Do you think it has any similarity with this particular history?
MrRockleyend I think so
***** Yes, I think Chloe dying in the bathroom is a turning point for the universe, if you look at it, the consequences of her death would be immense, Nathan would get caught, his evidence would lead us to Jefferson and Sean, Kate wouldn't die, maybe even Rachel wouldn't die, a lot of people wouldn't be involved.
In the alternate universe the world is ending too, it's ending with the same reason as the original universe (William not dying had no consequences to the universe), but then again the fact that Chloe doesn't die at that point could make the storm happen.
(wow sorry for some reason i thought Sam was talking to me, but the theory stays)
no
I remember one of the car license plates on episode two (I think) had DNNDRK, probably referring to Donnie Darko. I'm almost certain that the other license plates refer to shows or movies that the creators watched. This included TWNPKS (twin peaks) or BRKNBD (breaking bad) (which is funnily enough, on Frank's RV).
+Danielle Mendoza 'Donnie Darko', 'Butterfly Effect' and 'Twin Peaks' combine togehter.
If you read alt max's journals there is no mention at all of time travel
Oh. I had no idea you could read alt. Max's journals. Yet another reason I should just buy the game for myself! lol
Plus Max would never get her powers if Chloe wasn't shot by Nathan
This is something that I've been wondering all this time but didn't have the words to fully formulate my thoughts. Thank you. :)
Your theories are always the top!
And i totally agree on this vision about Chloe-hero and Max-support.
This is was one of your best theories (and tbh they're all pretty fkn amazing). You should be extra proud of this.
I hope they make a sequel so you guys can make more theories!! :3
PaperCookies I hope so too.
+Geek Remix Life Is Not Strange
"Life is Strange is *back*, and this time. *It's personal.*
MehdiGAMES Life is Pretty Normal
Chloe is getting killed over and over again because she's reckless for trusting Max's rewind ability too much. That's my opinion.
+Method Bro Exactly.
Omg this makes so much sense I mean your bringing up a lot of points!
Wait, remember when the first time we played this game? It said choose wisely, maybe siding with Chloe will kill her
I actually sat there for a good 10 minutes after completing episode 4 trying to think of as many theories as I could to try to cope with the emotional punch to the face the ending was, and for the most part I thought of all the theories you thought of (I still watched your theory videos anyway, both to give you more views and because I enjoy them) but this theory I honestly never thought of. Fantastic video.
WHY DO YOU ONLY HAVE 72000 SUBSCRIBERS?

That pun was amazing XD

But make sure you come back because this channel and you guys are gr8
BeadedMarshmallows lol!
+Geek Remix Hahahaha on point
your theories give me so many chills omfg
Oh my God I really hope you're right! I've read into so many theories and all of them usually end with either Max or Chloe having to die to save Arcadia Bay, and those don't settle right with me at all. This is the first logical theory that I've found that keeps both of them alive and able to save the day without one, or both, of them having to die to do so. I REALLY hope you're right! (no one hurts my babies)
3:50 Chloe also steps between max and frank in episode 4 at the beach (depending on your choices)
Excellent points as usual, Mari. Always looking at the deeper meaning of things, and to great effect.
Love this theory!! I feel like some kind of secret agent because I saw you post this on tumblr earlier haha
(Mari sobbing softly in the background) lmao I loved your playthrough, don't worry I cried with you 😣
what i want to know is where alt max went during the time max was in alt max's body
alt max was probably high and thought she was tripping out
+max i think that she was like she didnt get to travelr trought picture, she got to sleep and next morning she got to chloes house and than her other self that traveled got into her and the other one trough night and the beginning when she was with chloe doesnt exist in her mind anymore
I love your Life is Strange theory's, they all have at least some solid ground to them.
I can't get enough of your theories!!
You are so intelligent and observant, kind of like Samuel :)
This is the best and most plausible theory I've ever seen!
It's like Max is Merlin, Chloe is King Arthur, and Arcadia Bay is Camelot!
What you said about Arcadia Bay being like a physical thing, reminded me of the island from Lost.
+Av3rage_Gamer an eldrich place
"Try to ignore the quiet sobbing." XD I didn't even notice till you brought it up XD I watched the episode but it didn't cross my mind :P
I was one of those who thought that chloe had to die and that was her destiny... but her ''destiny'' is twisted so max has to assist chloe in fixing the unsiverse and setting ''destiny'' on its right course x______x *falls over*
honestly your theories are so amazing
The lycris of the music at the ending of episode 2 says:
"digging like you can burry something that cannot die."
especially when we see jefferson and wells at that right moment.
From all of your theories I think this is my favourite. I love it!
Max: Destiny?"
She changed her mood so drasticly from smiling a second before to being sad and holding up her head as if she was very worried.
Great work as always Mari, your theory videos are awesome!
i love your guys theories it gives me reasons to love the game more and more, and allows me to see deeper into the story me and my friend have a few talks about these theories
I love how you can see in the footage of chloe getting shot, that they we're constantly trying to rewind xD which was everyone's reaction I think.
Great video as always. Love listening to your Life is Strange content, theories, 2 girls 1 let's play. Keep up the amazing work~
great vídeo(again) . Love your take on things and your theories. keep up the great work xD
I want u to know, that even if ur theories aren't right in the end, U made the game a hundred times more interesting and entertaining for me. I am a bit worried the ending won't be as epic as your theories are. Thanx again, and I'll be watching ur theory videos with until the end.
Thank you Geek Remix for videos about Life is Strange. Love this game and your gaming style. Greetings from Poland!
Your theories are so fun and interesting to watch!
Beautifully put well done on this video!
Your insight is amazing, keep it up! Brilliant analysis.
OMG Mari you're a genius, awesome theory and I really think Chloe is the hero at the end
4:04 what do you mean with innocence?
Wow Mari you did it again! Awesome theory!
Another Life is Strange theory!
YESSSSSSSSHHHHHHHH
I find it interesting that Max has a very similar role to play as well... Max, Rockatansky anyway. They both May seem Like the "main" character (you play as Maxine in LIS, and the movie is called Mad Max) but instead are meant to be somewhat of a looking glass into these fictional worlds. It gets even more curious when they allow more of an outspoken female character to be the protag (Furiosa and chloe). I wonder if this was somewhat intentional, especially considering there is a mad max reference in LIS.
Another excellent theory! Chloe definitely has some higher purpose and I believe she can be brought back to life.
Cool, you got a new mic (I think. You sound a bit different). That's awesome!
Nice video. I love your channel.
Awesome observations, as always!
Another wonderful theory! Love you guys! :D
Yes, please. I really needed something to give me some more hope. lol
I think it could go either way--Chloe needing to die to prevent the storm, or the unnatural phenomena being separate and her being the key to saving the town.
Good.
Just before Max travels to the alternate timeline she's in her dormroom on her bed, when she wakes back up in the real world an X amount of time has passed and she's in Choles room but it would have made more sense if she woke up back in her room in her school dorm, my question is, what happened to Max for everyone else whilst we were playing as her in the other timeline...And how would think link into the next episode with the popular theory that Warren's picture can be used again?..
you know I really feel like the devs watch your theories and design the game based upon them XD
Hey Mari,
In Episode 1 of Life is Strange you can see the trailer for Episode 4 in Broke's phone in the school halls and in Episode 2 in the Science room again in Broke's phone. Also I dont think the dead body is Nathan's because it wont smell that bad and it will look like him if it was his body.
