Lol it isn't cheating, it's better to do what you feel comfortable doing than struggling and possibly making a less nice sound. I do it that way too by the way :)

If I have more than two fingers on one fret it's too much of a squeeze. So with D for example, I find it easier to squash one fat finger over all the three correct finger placements. Not quite a bar, but it works for my chubby arthritic digits.

Yes. The advice I hear is take it r-e-a-l-l-y s-l-o-w. Also, "Riptide" has easier chords for beginners, so I'm going to try that first :)
