- As Muslims across the world begin Ramadan, British Muslims are divided on what day they’re meant to begin their fast. One community in south London is trying to revive the Islamic tradition of moonsighting in order to determine that date for themselves.

Hadrat ibn-e-‘Umar reported that the Messenger of Allah has said, “Do not commence fasting (Ramadan) till you see the new moon, and do not cease fasting (perform Eid) till you see it. But if the weather is cloudy, or there is a smog in the sky(which prevents sighting of the moon), then complete 30 days of the month.” [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 1, Page 256]

One thing only you need to know before converting, to know to which sects you are dealing with, don't follow shias, or other sects other than sunnah cause these sects were formed after the death of our prophet and all of them lead to shirk. When did you guys start fasting?
I started on Monday because the moon was sighted in Saudi Arabia on Sunday night.
However, my friend stated on Tuesday because the moon wasn't sighted in England on Sunday night but was sighted on Monday night.
The majority of my friends started on Monday.
It would be nice to hear other people's opinions.
Im from uk. We started on tuesday. Cant see the moon clearly in uk so we follow morrocco or south africas moon because they are the nearest muslim country to us

We don't even call it God, it literally is an abstract concept that is beyond the mind. This reality is the essence of all humans, hence once can realise it through meditation. To relate to this abstract concept, humans find it easier to relate to figures and people. As one's focus progresses, the idol is no longer needed hence the idol is a stepping stone or tool to spirituality.

Lets clear this. Some people believe that when saudi arabia starts they start due to saudi arabia being the centre of islam. Some people believe to start ramadan 1 day after due to the moon sightings in their country. So neither is wrong or right. Upto you on which you want to follow. With the world or with your country.

As you all know this is a working country. If Ramadan and eid ul fitr as well as eid ul adha is celebrated one day instead of one day and another day then it would be better. And I have heard if both eids were celebrated one day in this working country then there would be public holidays for the working class. Please spare a thought about this and all you imams and leaders of the committee in mosques in the whole of England should get together now in this holy month of Ramadan and agree to this. You have this responsibility now of ensuring the right thing is done.
Traditional Moon sightings can result in differences thus Pakistani govt have decided to dissolve clerical moon sighting committee and instead have brought scientific based lunar committee to make a lunar calendar.

If unable to sight the moon globally then calculate the date of the month as 30.
The concept of seeing the moon is ridiculous, particularly if it is cloudy. If it is cloudy, then we can potentially miss the beginning of Ramadan and Eid. It's not the sighting of the moon, but the position of the moon that matters and we can calculate that from space stations, satellites and powerful telescopes (not one bought from a toyshop). We can do that easily from the UK as the West has all this equipment and qualified scientists, so we don't have to rely on Saudi Arabia making dubious decisions based on their toy telescope.

If it’s cloudy then we start after 30 days but if the new Cresant moon is sighted then we start after the 29th day on the Islamic calendar.
