This may not be canon, but this is a wonderful theory that many fans still hold in their hearts post-release. You can find art and fanfics online-some romantic or just friendship, but it's all sad.
We're all Sonic fans. So let's not bully and degrade others for making fanart, stories, or OCs surrounding this theory. Or interpreting Infinite and the Avatar's past as romance or friendship. Sonic himself wouldn't do that--he was supportive, kind, and loyal to the custom character throughout the game

I like to headcanon this and the "Scars" fan comic instead of the canon story. They are just so much more involving and interesting while also leaving behind a good ending for a character I was very excited for.

I really wish this was the actual backstory for infinite - it'll make the OC character make sense storywise (and not just as a gimmick), and would make a much better (and needed) character development for both the OC and infinite.

Well to those who may have seen the leaks for the game, like myself, as to not build up your expectations; I can say with candor that not everything is as I'd hoped it would be in the story of Sonic Forces 😭 But honestly, that was to be expected.
But, that is unfortunately the risk one runs when developing a "predictions" or "theory" video prior to a game's release. However I don't regret it one bit and I'm still really proud to have developed this video and shared the experience with all of you!
For many of us, "comprehensive story and character development" is something we've learned not to associate with "Sonic The Hedgehog" in recent years, the finest hours for the story left long ago with games like the Adventure series, Unleashed, Black Knight and heck, even Shadow The Hedgehog or Sonic 06 - in terms of genuine character development. (fite me)
It's a shame that we may never see a Sonic story reach a level of intricacy as chronicled here, and when someone like me, a mere Sonic-fan can come up with something that causes more hype and intrigue than the actual writers with some 23 years worth of writing experience beneath their belts... that's a problem. 😟
Nonetheless, thank you all for being so accepting of this theory and the tangled web of story I weaved from just an odd thought one night, you're all freakin' awesome and your support means everything!

Yeah, not gonna lie, this sounded a lot better than the final result. A corrupted, brainwashed friend is exactly the kind of saturday morning cartoon nonsense that sega would do, but they stood with something else and left a lot more questions as a result.

Sonic Forces has the potential to have a REALLY good story.
If this is true (especially The Tragic Villain one) then this would without a doubt be one of the best stories in a Sonic Game.
And SEGA did say Sonic Forces is a more darker story then the recent games.

Technically the Phantom Ruby can send object to other Time Periods.
After Press Garden Zone in Sonic Mania, Eggman uses the Phantom Ruby to send Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles to Stardust Speedway.
Not just Stardust Speedway, but Stardust Speedway PAST.

For kicking his ass *and* killing all of his squad members *and* tarnishing his reputation *overnight* by *one* hedgehog. That's actually a lot to take in.
Infinite doesn't really focus his entire motivation towards Shadow. If that was the case, he would settle the score one-on-one with him instead of Sonic and the rest of the resistance. Infinite had ambition, and his ambition was only fueled more after seeing Shadow's power.

And sure, shadow kicked his ass, but it's shadow, everyone knows that's like fighting sonic, but morally grey, so how would that ruin a reputation outside siding with eggman, which isn't really anyone but his own fault. What you're saying needed to be shown, as that would have made him interesting, but instead, his character arc is explained in 1 level of a dlc, and mostly revolves around his ass being beat, which takes roughly 5 minutes.

Edit: Okay, now that I've finished actually watching the video, this theory has made me even MORE hyped about Forces. This may only be a theory, but this theory has SO MUCH EVIDENCE BACKING IT UP THAT I CAN'T HELP BUT ACTUALLY AGREE WITH IT!! The only problem NOW is...Classic Sonic will probably be the even MORE of an outlier in the story as a result.

Keelan Barron Nah, Knuckles seems to be pretty serious right now(as pretty much every other Modern character), so it could very well be that Classic Sonic in Forces is, sadly, just comic relief. I really hope not, though.
I doubt that Classic will be the comic relief character since he's pretty much on board with saving the universe stuff, Sonic may be the type of person that can be joking around sometimes but even he knows when shit gets serious that can threaten everything around him.
He'll probably mess with Eggman probably (Cause that's what he does) but at his most serious is with Infinite.
I don't think he will be. There has to be an explanation as to why he was brought to Modern Sonic's world. I mean, the Phantom Ruby clearly made the decision to take Classic Sonic with it into the portal. If it was able to seperate the Chaos Emeralds from CS, why wouldn't it just shoo him away as well? Especially since it should've been able to see that CS was a clear threat to it. This game has been in development for four years, and with all these little small hints and secret meanings, the story must be pretty big in some way. I can't wait to see what will happen in this game.
I hope not! If anything, Classic now has more reason than Modern Sonic to be trying to bring Infinite down! After all, he's ran into the Phantom Ruby already!

I like how in the final boss the timer is inconsistent, because of the ruby.
I have an idea of how the Phantom Ruby gained sentience. It's an inanimate object throughout the game but at the end, before it sucks Sonic and itself through a portal, we see it shine and have a glitchy aura. I think the power of the Chaos Emeralds surrounding it gave it sentience, and such it was able to separate them from Sonic. It then used its reality warping powers to create a suitable body, modeled after the one who defeated it.
Forces is looking to be one of the deepest sonic games from a story and character viewpoint.

Hey scourge/everyone I have a theory about the connection between shadow and infinite...
My theory is that shadow is a android version of the original shadow and that infinite is the real shadow that eggman found after sa2 and used the phantom ruby to rewrite his memory and physical form forcing him to want revenge against sonic and bringing back Maria from sa2.
If you look at the song lyrics you can see why I might believe this and quote only scars remain of who I was.
Reason 1. Look at where the ruby is placed that's right shadows chest puff.
2. Look at the messed up quills they look like a old mutated version of shadows quills.
3. There are similarities between shadows inhibitor rings and the lump under infinites gloves.
4. Infinite and is so edge
Please don't shit on this theory as it is just that a theory and I made this up on the spot.

I still come back to this video, this theory is so good. This story gives Infinite DEPTH. It gives the avatar CHARACTER instead of being some random person that can be swapped out for anyone and purpose instead of being just there and it leaves enough room for the player to insert a personality. It also makes the main villian not some whiny edgelord but the TRUE villian being an inter dimensional eldrich being. Imagine how much better the final boss could have been. Imagine Infinite, tearing out the ruby from his chest, being freed and reunited with the Avatar, only for an eldrich being to form, the phantom ruby’s true form. The avatar and Infinite would work together to defeat it. The being that took away Infinite’s self and forced him to destroy everything. The boss would have all kinds of crazy reality bending tricks and fist bump would be playing as you fight him. It would make the song so much cooler and more meaningful as it would represent two long time friends banding together to defeat the demon that tore them apart and controlled them, in Infinite’s case, instead of two people who’ve known eachother for a week at most. If you could combine it with Infinite’s theme and call it Infinity Fist or something. Just thought it would be vastly better.

Hey something I noticed in the game is that infinite had to make a copy of metal sonic and sonic said why didnt eggman made more of them robots. So this means the sonic scourge's theory of metal sonic being actually sonic, on his theory he said that metal sonic could have been sonic before eggman converting him into metal sonic, so this means metal sonic does have a soul meaning metal sonic may and could actually be sonic but roboticised.
The first time I saw the trailer, I noticed there seemed to be a connection between the custom character and infinite. I always felt Infinite's role was in somehow shape or form designed to support the custom character and give him a story. This was before Sonic Mania and that red stone was introduced.
Welp. This hurt my soul but as far as I'm concerned this is the storyline. This is what happened, you can't convince me otherwise.

They created episode shadow after the fact. As they ran out of time and had to explain it away. I have a theory that is the reason. the screen shot of infente in the glitch matrix is not used anywhere in game. As im assumeing that was supose to be the final battle. Likely takeing place after the avatar uses the ruby to destroy the false sun. another theory is in the scraped story-line he was suppose to be the avatar from a reality created when he picked up the phantom ruby. This was likely going to be reveled after said false sun level and boss fight. The "prototypes" where not suppose to have exited and where tacked on last moment as well.

Now that the game is out. Time for another explanation. Infinite is created by eggman and is used as a task force. as Shadow infiltrates the doctors facility, Infinites squadron fails to end shadow and maked Infinite do the work, but is badly overpowered by Shadow. So in Infinites rage he creates his mask and finds the Phantom ruby, knowing of yhe power surge it gives off he takes a shard of it for himself and creates a copy of it. Now as Scourge sayd, Shadow is on team dark (not quite) Infinite does not posses mind control. Infinite has the abillity to copy and re program his own army out of what he was programed by Eggman to know. which is all of sonics past. Thats how he created the copies of all of sonics ex foes. As seen later on in the game, Shadow fights infinites clone of Shadow. Silver the hedgehog takes on infinite and puts up a fairly good fight, as does shadow. Sonic does not because Sonics speed is no match for Infinites abillity to bed reality. Silver and Shadow can manipulate abilities stronger than Sonic. thats why at a time they were all rivals.
"What we find in the ashes, you'll lose in the fire!" More proof that infinite can manipulate the game.

This theory can't be completely wrong. Infinite before receiving the stone was a mercenary hired by Eggman. He was willing to work with eggman. He also wanted to become stronger, but got greedy and maybe forgot about hiss past before being hired by the mercenary. The other villains are clones of their original forms.

Well, Infinite's Phantom Ruby uses illusions like when he tried to drop the sun into the planet. However, according to Tails, when the illusions are in motion, they are real. Also, they respond to certain emotions. Meaning that maybe this original Phantom Ruby was a template for the new rubies that he made.
