    In 1968 Barney Kessel took his place on a European tour as a member of the Guitar Workshop (with George Benson, Larry Coryell, Jim Hall, and Elmer Snowden). In 1969 while he was living in London, he recorded this footage at the Ronnie's Scott's Jazz Club with Kenny Burrell, Grant Green (guitar), Larry Ridley (bass) and Don Lamond (drums).

    Any one of these three of these guys are pure genius's on their own. I thought Grant Green was the baddest until Burrell came out with something from outer space, very dissonant and signature Kenny Burrell. Barney Kessell had that look of wonder upon his face.

    It's hard to believe, and quite a shame that this is the only known footage of Grant Green. The man played for decades until the late 70's. Nobody thought in all those years to shoot some film of this master. I know he wasn't very big in his time, but his influence since has been massive across many genres of music. How amazing it must have been to be at this show and witness these 3 giants of Jazz just smoking their guitars!

      There's a lot of footage of Grant Green from when he appeared on the Gino Washington Show in Detroit in 1976. Grant was his guest for about a month (it was a weekly show). Sharony Green, Grant's biographer and daughter-in-law, told me years ago she's aware of the footage. Someone has to convince Gino to release it. She mentioned there was supposed to be a documentary about Grant, but sadly years later, I haven't heard anything about it.

      Jazz is alive. Listen to Esperanza Spalding, Christian Scott, Mark Turner, Kurt Rosenwinkel, etc... Jazz is not dead it´s buried alive, in the underground.

    • @jazzerson7087
      @jazzerson7087 7 лет назад +3

      Pizaz is right though, and I know I've heard Pat Martino say this, the jazz scene on the scale of what it was exists nowhere today. Most people can't earn enough as just a jazz musician anymore, they have to teach in colleges etc. The odd jazz club and festival is keeping it alive, but the "environment" in which these cats grew up in, learned their trade and thrived no longer exists sadly. It really diminished in the 60s as rock became more popular. We're lucky that a lot of them continued regardless, some of Joe Pass and Oscar Peterson's best work was done in the 70s and 80s for instance.

    The cut - it ain’t necessarily so - has Grant hitting one note that is so perfectly struck and spoken it would be difficult to do so if your not green or some shade of green . For Grant it was natural as his last name was green and his fingers made the magic grow .
