You rock for having asked some of those questions! The mystic turtles "being aimed at younger fans" is bull. There's barely any paint on them. It's inexcusable for a $9 figure. Pretty psyched about some of these upcoming releases though.

His excuses are hard to stomach when back in the 80s and 90s when tmnt was aimed 100% to a new generation of kids on a relatively risky, unknown, new property they still managed insane levels of detail and paint apps while charging the same or even less

I didn't like his excuses for the bad paint jobs on those basic figures. If they were able to do it twenty years ago they should be able to do it now. What I find really messed up is they are showcasing the prototypes with paint jobs that will not make it to the final line. That being said I am really looking forward to the turtles that turn into weapons. Thanks again, Pixel Dan.
Yeah I hope eventually if Neca is allowed to make 2012 Turtles figures, they could correct the mistakes Playmates Toys made with at least the basic figures.

Believe me everyone wants that diorama....however....I did some research and I'm still looking but the pieces they use as sewer covers/vents, what have you, are made by a company called NDS. I'm assuming someone else hand crafted the rest.

If they're having trouble making donatello as two bowstaff, why dont they just make him turn into one bowstaff? Its more accurate anyway.

Fugitoid reminds me of a Japanese robot. Mondo's appearance surprises me. I was definitely not expecting to see Savanti Romero.

Let me get this straight you decide to skip the paint that details the figure cause of cost even though your losing sales cause everybody who notices this or collects TMNT refuses to buy. And yes it does hurt the brand cause people will stop buying them. And I find it funny how Playmates makes it a cost issue when The turtles is a multi million dollar business. But anytime you got a suit and tie around out goes quality out goes artist integrity.
I think he says that the less detailed are for kids - family budget you know. So they can actually get the toys. And they also offer deluxe figures for who ever wants them and has the money.
Krang Prime is neat, hopefully people don't complain too much about it being hollow, and non-articulated. not much you should expect in way of articulation for Krang Prime lol.

Another great interview, Dan. With the lack of paint apps on some of these TMNT figures I have to wonder if any customizers have applied their talents to the well sculpted TMNT figures.

IMO they should give the line all they've got to ensure that in 15-20 years their current target demographic will return to support the property for the next generation and not just pump out incomplete forgettable figures.

Human Karai and Ice Cream Kitty are the ones I want the most. I'm not holding out hope for human Karai though. At least ick is a possibility. And, like everyone else, I'm glad you asked about the mystic turtles shoddy paint job.
Fugatoid? Savanti? I know where this is going, and it's epic. Ooh man, I may not be too interested in collecting the toys but this has made me even more excited for season 3 (and 4) of the show!
Krang Prime looks good but if there is no articulation in it, I want more than just five little Krangs included!

Just an awesome video! I love the head drop turtles a lot. Yes, please do the Ice-Cream kitty three pack! Mondo Gecko was my favorite Turtle friend I can't wait to get him!!!!
A big part of why tmnt as a toyline has endured this long rests on the innovation and incredible sculptwork/obvious love and artistic freedom that went into the original toyline. It sucks knowing they are capable of greatness today but are held back by guys in suits like this interested solely in the bottom line.
I'm not surprised of course and not saying it didn't happen back in the day, but I will say it was to a far lesser degree.
Playmates can afford to put more polish into the line they just choose not to for a larger financial gain. That is what sucks.

I know he is a nice guy, but I love that his exuse was " cost reasons". Cost reasons? You guys have been number 1 for two years in a row and you dont have the monry for just a few more slaps of paint? *sigh* Well, these ARE for kids, I guess....
Angelo Roldan Kids are still smarter then we give them credit for. Truest me I know that my cousin wouldn't want to play with a figure that has almost no paint on it at all
+Angelo Roldan The toys have to make a certain profit and consumers will only spend a certain amount of money on average for the toys. There is always a cost/benefit analysis.

The original toy line was geared towards little kids too, they didn't skimp on the paint then.

They really farted with that tranformer turtles line. He looked like he didn't want to deal with it at all. And why even release a line with a missing brother?!!! Turtles are about family. Come on guys! I want to see a Giant mutant Ooze container too.

Just put out the human Karai figure already! Basing the decision to release her on how the snake form sells is mind bogglingly STUPID! When he pointed out serpent Karai and said, "this is one fans have been asking for" I actually shouted at the screen, "No we've been asking for the human Karai you idiot!" I can't speak for everyone but I and the majority of fans I've talked to feel the mutating Karai story was a horrible idea and need to be resolved and her mutation undone NOW. Odds are if the serpent form sells really well it'll be because fans are buying it solely for the human head and customizing their own body for her!

Can't help the feeling that I'm going to be massively let down when Baxter fly shows up with a dull matte pea soup colored paint app on his eyes instead of that awesome metallic sheen....
I own the figure and it looks exactly as it does in the video. Trust me the eyes look awesome.

rodster6 we really should have and you know what they could done with krang prime use his big suit you know that um thing that he uses as a body we saw it at the end of season 1 and 2 and also get a huge turtle mech like we saw on tv and get so many big action figures and get a big playset like you know that big thing in the sky that was also at the end of season 1 or maybe 2 that we saw I don't know how to spell it but you know what I'm saying the thing we saw on the Nickelodeon show of teenage mutant ninja turtles but remember season four with the big turtle in space I forgot it's name but it's a big alien in the show and we should have a big figure of that with the turtle mech
