Here is a cool video on some extremely rare Australian Chryslers that were sold in Japan through Mitsubishi dealers - the Chrysler by Chrysler and Valiant Charger 770. Please 👍Like👍 and Subscribe for more old car videos. What do you think of the Japanese Charger front styling compared to the Australian one?

Great story Mark. There's was so much more to the Aussie car industry than what met the eye - and it's so much appreciated when you uncover gems like this.
These cars had so much character as opposed to the (mostly) bland bubble cars we are offered these days.
I'm sure there'd be a few Japanese owners still worshipping the few good Chargers and Chryslers left over there. Would be really something to track some down.

Hi Mark, thanks for this. My cousin was a Chrysler dealer in Sydney growing up, so I was lucky enough to have a succession of fabulous Valiants to drool over as a kid. I can remember my cousin turning up in a new 770 Charger, it hadn’t been released formally so I was over the moon. I can’t recall what motor it had buy it went like stick. From old Safari wagons, pacers, 245 and 265 sedan, Ve, Vh to etc I just love em. I still recall the adds on TV when they released an electronic ignition, the fire brigade hosed the engine bay down and it of course started no problem. That was quite something in an era of British cars that stopped after most puddles or heavy rain.
    Thank you.

We had a different spec 318 here. It was a normal 318 but was upgraded and called a 318 Fireball. It had a different camshaft and all had the single plane 2bbl intake with the B&B Carter 2bbl. They were rated at 230hp and 340ft/lb.
They were really common. When the Fireball was released it was the only 318 available. Before and after the Fireball there were other 318s including the ELB. All had 2bbl carbs and very average centre discharge exhaust manifolds - none ever had Thermoquads or anything like that. There were OEM 4bbl 340s here too but they weren't common. Also the 360 was common, most of them being 2bbl, having J heads but without the 340 size valves.

This is a very well-presented post, Mark. Well done. For many, many years, I have wondered why people refer to Chrysler products, such as Dodge, De Soto, Plymouth, Valiant, etc., as MOPARS. No other vehicle is nicked named after its spare parts division, like an AcDelco 253 or a big AcDelco 350. When was the last time you heard someone saying " A very cool Motorcraft GTHO"? Yet everyone seems to call a Charger 340 a Big MOPAR. Most people wouldn't know that MOPAR stands for Motor parts. My old man used to say, "It's not a MOPAR; it's a bloody Chrysler made up of MOPAR parts." In the case of Fords, FOPAR would have caused some smiles and derogatory comments. Mr B , if you like Oldsmobile,s , the rarest ( sort of Oldsmobile) was the late 1970 s General Motors Holden LE Monaro Two Doors, that had the " Honeycomb Pontiac wheels standard" and the story goes , when the 1979 American president of GM Holden was retiring and going home to the US he wanted one of the LE Two Door Holden Monaro s , but they came with the Aussie only 308 ci Holden V8, he would not be able to get parts back in the US , so as the LE had Trans Am wheels already he got three LE Monaro s installed with 403 ci Oldsmobile V8s and T400 transmission ( the T400 was standard behind the Aussie 308 ci anyway) these cars still exist the one he took back to the US is still there , the other 2 somewhere in Australia. Holden did have plans to have the 1977 to 1979 Long wheel base Statesman 4 door and Two door LE Monaro be available with the 403 ci Olds as the top of the line motor but it never went through . So somewhere in the US is a Two Door Holden Monaro LE with a 6.6 Olds .
