They tarnished their careers and are remembered as quite pathetic not knowing when to give their roster spot to young players who need experience.
I think if the team was rebuilding and terrible, he would just go for the record and then retire. The rebuild ended up being a retool and the team is actually good now, he might want to stick around longer.
