To be honest, I think the only reason people find Surströmming to be unpleasant is because they are preparing & eating it the wrong way. I’ve seen a couple of videos on RUclips based on how Swedish/Norwegian people would have it. They usually open the tin outdoors, with paper towels to block the spray. They’d then break it apart, rather than shoving whole pieces in their mouths; just little pieces at a time. They served it with some kind of bread/wafer (IDK what kind it was), alongside potatoes, chopped onions, tomatoes, etc. Another thing, too; they all had strong drinks with it, including (both) beer & shots of vodka. Whatever way they prepared it, they didn’t seem repulsed by it at all (in fact, they were eager to chow down on it)! I’ve always enjoyed different types of fish & seafood, though there are many types that I’ve never tried before. I think if it had been served the same way as I saw in that other RUclips video, I probably would give Surströmming a try (even if it’s just to say that I’ve tried it). Food for thought, I guess! LOL. 😄
Wtg gents, I did with some friends also, the guy on the left hats off to you, for getting seconds..... The mid and right guys, I was where you guys were at..... 😁😁🤕😁😁
Personally, even though I was born and raised in (Northern) Sweden, I am not a big fan of surströmming... but I think I have only seen a handful of foreigners on RUclips eat it the right way. In Sweden, you don't just eat it out of the can; you eat it on ljusugnsbröd (a Swedish thin, crispy flatbread) with butter, boiled potatoes, red onion, sour cream and dill. Usually accompanied with beer and snaps. Trust me, it makes it way better. A video on how to properly prepare and eat surströmming: ruclips.net/video/kDr0Kbbw6D0/видео.html I remember a story from a few years ago about surströmming... A man who cam to Sweden as a refugee from the Middle East had been out with a couple friends, hanging out in central Stockholm. In the evening, he made his way back home to his apartment complex, and when he opened the door to the stairwell, he could instantly smell... something terrible. He freaked out, since he had not been living in Sweden for a long time. Maybe about a year tops. He freaked out, and called the emergency number, convinced that someone had died somewhere in the apartment complex - and he was too afraid to go indoors to investigate if further. A little while later, a police car arrived on the scene, and he was still standing outside waiting for them, clearly anxious. The officers started to talk to him, and one of them then proceeded to enter the stairwell... he just stood there, looking around, and walked back out to his partner with a wide smile, trying not to chuckle, and said "it's all good - this is just surströmming". Now they had to try to explain to this poor fellow that nobody had actually died - and that this was food... Poor guy must've though "what batsh*t crazy country have I come to, calling this food?!?" xD
Bought 2 cans for a friend of mine at work who is from Hungary, he thought it was fantastic and now he wants me to get him 2 cans every time I'm driving to Sweden (cans are not allowed on airplanes).
