There's plenty of conscious hip hop in the mainstream, you just have to not be a "hip-hop is dead" idiot.
+Keyser Soeze how so? Joey is mainstream now, as are Odd Future and TDE, Chance, Vic, and Bronson were all XXL Freshmen, Logic's got a sizable fanbase, as well as UA and FB Zombies. Curry hasn't quite broken into the mainstream yet, but he's coming up. Mac is mainstream, KRIT is accomplished, and Mick is a recognized force in Chicago hip-hop outside of the mindless drill scene.

Don't care about the "controversy" surrounding the lyrics. Most of it, if not all, is actually true. But the beat, the drop, the hook, the orchestral backing, is absolutely epic. My favourite KL track.

I see the ending section as a calm down moment for Kendrick, the emotions he dives into are raw and to his bone and he needs time to re-focus on things. Absolutely fucking adore the last part and all of it actually.
I wish he did the full How Much a Dollar Cost that instrumental is just too beautiful and is 10x better with a live orchestra
