I think its so beautiful to watch Katharine being coached, and really taking the notes, and applying them without questions. She's just allowing her voice to be the instrument without any ego attached. Such a wonderful artist, who clearly is still willing to grow and learn
I didn't really know much about vocal coaching, and just thought of it as "singing lessons" without even really knowing in any detail what *that* meant. Then I saw Michael Jackson in his documentary right before he died and being coached and I thought, "Why would he need them?" But I imagine when you're at this high of a level like these women that's a big part of the professionalism is conditioning so that all the raw ability and practice comes through.
It’s so insane how psychological singing can be. In my lessons I can do all the exercises well, but when it comes to singing a song i get scared of the notes or singing too loud and pull back. I honestly think this channel, along with my lessons, have helped me improve my singing and confidence when singing 😊
It's so psychological! I know when I'm relaxed I can hit far higher notes confidently than when I'm nervous - that's why you've got to train your body to work right even when your brain isn't in it.
Singing is such a physiological and strenuous exercise, its why some of us play instruments instead.. Although I'm a drummer,so I'm using all four limbs, which can be pretty tiring as well!!.
Isn’t it so amazing to watch? I’m in awe of every video Natalie uploads purely because every critique she gives, is something I’ve never been able to explain or understand myself but she explains things better than anyone I’ve ever met before. It’s truely a blessing to watch.
I’d heard the opposite about her, so it was lovely to see her here. Humble, gracious and open to critique. Not that she could really get any better, she’s amazing- two supernovas right here.🤩🤩💫
It calms me, to see performers that I admire, train, rehearse and, sometime, struggle with technique. Because it makes them human, and helps me with my mindset, when I have to practise my own singing and when I struggle with the techniques. Mostly it makes me happy that no matter how known a performer is over the world, they still have to practise like the rest of us, and they can also make mistakes just like us. Thank you for sharing the session.
I know! I'm a new student to singing and I don't have vibrato yet and I'm really confused about whether it's a natural thing or whether you mentally have to think about it every time.
All of her students are already singers and have basic singing technique and knowledge. Some are really good but still need some help but nobody is like a starter. Check out Jacob's Vocal Academy. They've got exercises for everything and you learn real fast add that to listening to Natalie and observing boom! It's all easy.
It really depends on the singer. Like, it didn't come naturally to me. But I've been working really hard on it, and now I can do it on command. In my case, it was just a matter of getting better breath control
Gray K it will come in time as you sing. As long as your using somewhat proper technique it will naturally develop as you keep singing. Once you “have it” it’s not something you really have to think about, it will just happen
I’ve been her fan since American Idol, and was also lucky to get to see her as Jenna! Absolutely amazing! Her tone, depth, warmth and voice control are incredible!
3:19 My sentiments exactly when Katherine said "... Can I just hear you sing" The way Natalie sang the line of the song a few seconds before was just jaw droppingly beautiful🫠😍 Two gorgeous voices! And what an informative, funny and entertaining video. Amazing how much you can learn from this. Can't remember how many times I've been watching it
This should be a reality series. Love the quick edits to cut the dead space. Well done. Would love some interjection / reflection from Natalie that could be relative to bigger learning moments. I find Natalie to be so relatable, fun, funny, and she know her shiz - for realz!
It is so nice to see Natalie figure out what's best for Katherine's voice. As a teacher myself it makes me feel so much better when I'm figuring stuff during lessons
It is rewarding to teach! To give my vocal students the knowledge of their own true voice thru technique and psychological confidence is a joy for me!!
I think this is one of Natalie’s best coaching videos. She caught the very minute details that could’ve been fixed, instructed and demonstrated how to, and she definitely made Katherine sing more healthily. Thank you Katherine for letting this be shared to the rest of us. This definitely helps me a lot with my singing.. Thank you Natalie, you’re the best ❤️❤️
She's such a good teacher! She has the perfect balance between being warm enough to put people at ease and be receptive, and being firm enough to keep the focus consistent.
I haven't/don't put it in to practice, but I honestly feel like I'm subconsciously taking in all of the teachings and becoming a better vocalist watching these
Omg the position for the higher notes is so well-explained, I hit those notes for the first time ever, after many many unsuccessful attempts. Almost crying here, was sure my voice was just not made for this kind of songs. Thank you so much!
This makes me reminisce my time when I was taking vocal classes. It’s so encouraging to see Katherine still learning how to sing even when she’s already an awesome singer.
Katherine is an amazing singer, and Natalie coaches her so well here. They really work together. Natalie, you are incredible. Thank you for sharing this session.
it's so incredible to watch a professional practice and struggle the same way I do. My lessons look just like this, and I always think I sound like shit because I'm always working on things and making little mistakes. It makes me scared to practice sometimes because my voice is so loud and I don't want people to hear how horrible I am. Watching this, it's clear that she never sounds 'bad,' she's just refining the sound. I'm not saying that I have her instrument, but it makes me feel a lot better
Love everything about this! No egos - just 2 people excelling at what they do best! Also Kat and Natalie are vocal run QUEENS! They do them so effortlessly 😩😍
Watching Katherine be coached like this makes me feel so much better about how my voice coach picks apart every sound I make. Just goes to show that it takes hard work to sound perfect - even for the experts!
So so vulnerable to show a voice lesson. It is AMAZING to see exactly how close this is to my lessons. I felt so self conscious of the many many corrections but now I see it is normal.
Natalie is an amazing teacher. I know nothing of the technicality of music and so this makes me appreciate even more all that goes into a song! I hope natalie coaches or teaches on a regular basis.
Was lucky enough to see Katharine in the final run of Waitress on Broadway, just at the beginning of December. It was my maybe see musical and as soon as I knew it was her I knew it had to be seen. Fantastic singer, great musical, great seat! All totalled up to a amazing evening and a great memory!
Why I LOVE this video is to show people that even when you already have a gifted and trained talent as Kat does, vocal coaching is ALWAYS teaching student new or old techniques that MUST be utilized in order to get the best vocal performance possible.
OMG why was this so fun to watch?? I can't sing a note to save my life but man watching these two working their tails off was so awesome. Apparently ppl aren't just born singing like Katharine McPhee-Foster. I mean she has a ton of natural talent obviously however this was good to show everyone that even those who are famous amazing singers have to practice and take lessons to continue to perfect their craft. Love Katharine McPhee ever since watching her on American Idol and how genuine and kindhearted she has remained all these years later is just heart warming.
Love your videos, Natalie! Would you ever consider allowing your students to sing a full song for one of your videos? I love hearing parts of songs when your coaching gets them there, and I’d love the hear to the complete versions of the songs you’re coaching them through. Let’s hear the product of your amazing coaching!
Natalie! WONDERFUL coaching! Stellar. Great belt work and then flipping moments into the head with connection to the chest. I am going to share this on my pages. Great work. Love Katharine too!
“That’s too high for me.”
*aggressively supportive* “NO ITS NOT”
I love it.
I think its so beautiful to watch Katharine being coached, and really taking the notes, and applying them without questions. She's just allowing her voice to be the instrument without any ego attached. Such a wonderful artist, who clearly is still willing to grow and learn
Yes! I was thinking the exact same thing. You articulated it so beautifully. Peace 💜
Brandon Grimm “..allowing her voice to be the instrument without any ego attached.” YES. YES. YES!!!
Perks of having a vocal coach as a mother!
I didn't really know much about vocal coaching, and just thought of it as "singing lessons" without even really knowing in any detail what *that* meant. Then I saw Michael Jackson in his documentary right before he died and being coached and I thought, "Why would he need them?" Natalie’s coaching instincts demonstrate an insanely profound understanding of vocal mechanics. Masterful.
She also very Broadway. Not sure she would be as good for pop singers.
She teaches singers of all genres, not just Broadway, I can promise you. She really is masterful.
@christian Williams PREACH.
She actually understands the differences of singing pop and broadway and that’s amazing about her that not a lot of singers get.
SO WELL SAID!!!
"NeVeR EeNoUGh" ... "Show off"

*surprised pikachu face*
That was priceless lol
I known right :D

Yesss, or when I’m singing in mixed I chicken out and it all goes downhill
Singing is such a physiological and strenuous exercise, its why some of us play instruments instead.. Although I'm a drummer,so I'm using all four limbs, which can be pretty tiring as well!!.
Isn’t it so amazing to watch? I’m in awe of every video Natalie uploads purely because every critique she gives, is something I’ve never been able to explain or understand myself but she explains things better than anyone I’ve ever met before. It’s truely a blessing to watch.
when_life_gives_you_lemons I’m the EXACT same way as you!
is anybody else distracted by **Katharine's gorgeous cheekbones omg
Yes Natalie's cheekbones are OMG 😍
JeJo By i think she meant Katherines
@@ashton5171 no I called haz and she meant natalies
I was definitely distracted by something.
Well now I am
As a trained singer this is SOOOOOOOOO fucking informative. The way she teaches is so funny and intense yet playful. Best type of coach.
The "how dare you" after the riff at 08:05 is deserved. Great singer(s), great coach.
that riff was so beautiful
Amazing
Ik that was nuts. I’m not one to worship runs but that one was pretty, Musical, and reallyyyyy cleaaaaann
Katharine is damn talented and seems like a super nice and humble person.
maga Encina I met her at at waitress london and she was lovely. Seemed almost shy
Def agree!
I’d heard the opposite about her, so it was lovely to see her here. Humble, gracious and open to critique. Not that she could really get any better, she’s amazing- two supernovas right here.🤩🤩💫
Kat: this is too high for me
Also Kat: *singing the highest notes of the song*
“I should do that!”
“You did”

Thank you for sharing the session.
How are all of her students able to add such a beautiful vibrato on command anytime?!
This is soo hard in my opinion >.
I know! I'm a new student to singing and I don't have vibrato yet and I'm really confused about whether it's a natural thing or whether you mentally have to think about it every time.
L She in that video here is a professional Singer. Check out "dont forget me" from SMASH
All of her students are already singers and have basic singing technique and knowledge. Some are really good but still need some help but nobody is like a starter.

I love Katherine! Saw her as Jenna in Waitress west end and she was incredible x
BeautywithV Just saw her on Broadway and was blown away! ❤️
Truth.
I’ve been her fan since American Idol, and was also lucky to get to see her as Jenna! Absolutely amazing! Her tone, depth, warmth and voice control are incredible!
BeautywithV you should watch her in Scorpion 😭❤️ loved that show!
Wow I thought the whole video she would be such a good Jenna with her voice haha little did I know
3:19 My sentiments exactly when Katherine said "... Can I just hear you sing"

I saw her perform this at the garden and it was SO beautiful! I could literally binge all your videos, I learn so much!!!
“Show off”
“How dare you”
Lmfao I am scared of you
8:04
“You can do this too”
*does exact thing she said to do*
“How dare you”
So much respect for a world renowned singer and broadway actress who keep working on her craft with no ego!!
I think this is one of Natalie’s best coaching videos. Thank you Katherine for letting this be shared to the rest of us. This definitely helps me a lot with my singing.. Thank you Natalie, you’re the best ❤️❤️
This is such a great reminder that the work never stops.
Natalie is so strict but in a good way❤️Both extremely talented 😍😍
She's such a good teacher! She has the perfect balance between being warm enough to put people at ease and be receptive, and being firm enough to keep the focus consistent.
I haven't/don't put it in to practice, but I honestly feel like I'm subconsciously taking in all of the teachings and becoming a better vocalist watching these
WHAT?!!! THE COLLAB I WANTED THE MOST AND NEVER THOUGHT IT COULD HAPPEN. I SERIOUSLY CANNOT STOP SHOUTING. YOU'RE BOTH MAJESTIC CREATURES
The amount of technique coaching this teacher just gave out for free to all of us is incredible.
Omg the position for the higher notes is so well-explained, I hit those notes for the first time ever, after many many unsuccessful attempts. Almost crying here, was sure my voice was just not made for this kind of songs. Thank you so much!
This makes me reminisce my time when I was taking vocal classes. It’s so encouraging to see Katherine still learning how to sing even when she’s already an awesome singer.
i really want another musical tv show like smash or glee
The just came out with a show called "Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist" on NBC like one or two episodes out now. A Glee cast member is on it as a lead.
SMASH WAS SOOOO GOOD
Smash was the besttttt I was so angry when it got cancelled.
Sarah Irwin I never seen smash, is it really good?
Me too
Am I the only one who found the editing so nerve wrecking? My heart was beating like crazy the whole time! That was amazing! :D
Katherine is an amazing singer, and Natalie coaches her so well here. They really work together. Natalie, you are incredible. Thank you for sharing this session.
5:01 "..." "😲" "🤗" "showoff"

no wonder ariana has such good range lol
lmao
lol, so true! in fact Kat's tone & range reminds me a lot of Ariana's, both great vocalists
XD
7:06 They start doing Ariana Grande impressions
all the singers sound great, but Natalie is just divine, who agrees?
OMG I stumbled on this by accident an am just in awe of Natalie’s talent, voice, control, ear....everything 🙌🙌🙌

This makes me miss Smash so badly. What a great show that was.
RIGHT! I wanted them to work on a song from the show so badly 😭
I don't think I have ever loved a video so much. This is so great. The quick cuts in between make this feel like this is show. Love this.
Love this session, super helpful and I like how it’s sped up
OMG! This is so good! Natalie is a scarily good coach. Kat is phenomenal. So much talent in one room.
Watching Katherine be coached like this makes me feel so much better about how my voice coach picks apart every sound I make. Just goes to show that it takes hard work to sound perfect - even for the experts!
you deserve it all. you're literally the best voice teacher ever.
I’m exhausted… And I wasn’t even the one singing. Kudos to all the training and hard work that goes to perfecting a song.

Great lesson! So rare to find, thank you ☺️

This was fascinating, and I have to connection to singing or musical theory. Major props!! Gonna watch a few more!
I love EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS VIDEO!
Why I LOVE this video is to show people that even when you already have a gifted and trained talent as Kat does, vocal coaching is ALWAYS teaching student new or old techniques that MUST be utilized in order to get the best vocal performance possible.

Maxwell James funny that the one who got kicked off much earlier is the coach
I could watch you two all day. Amazing, ladies!

Absolutely amazing!!!!! You have an amazing ear and a great voice as well. Very enjoyable to watch.
Gosh, I miss training and lessons! These ladies have such beautiful voices! Its been too long! 14 years! I gotta start taking lessons with Natalie
Just watching this is like a master class! So fun and educational, and they, of course, both sound beautiful. 💜
OMG why was this so fun to watch?? I can't sing a note to save my life but man watching these two working their tails off was so awesome. This video was recommended to me and I’m absolutely living for every reason
So much talent in one room!
She said “oh f*ck” at 6:54 😂😂😂
Also I did not know what a phenomenal voice Katherine McPhee has until today.
Love your videos, Natalie! Would you ever consider allowing your students to sing a full song for one of your videos?
