- "Nanook of the North" (1922), a silent documentary film by Robert J. Flaherty, is a significant piece of film history that blends elements of documentary and docudrama, predating the clear separation of these genres. The film follows the life of an Inuk man named Allakariallak (referred to as Nanook in the film) and his family in the Canadian Arctic, capturing their struggles and ingenuity in the harsh environment.
While the film has been praised for its stark portrayal of its heroes' courage, it is important to recognize that it is not an accurate representation of Inuit life at the time. Flaherty collaborated with Allakariallak to stage every scene, recreating how the Inuit used to live. The family portrayed is not a real family, the clothes were provided by a French fur company, and even the igloo is a constructed set, built to allow sufficient lighting for filming.
This staging can be understood in the context of the limitations of early 20th-century filmmaking, as the heavy and cumbersome equipment would have made it impossible to capture a genuine "slice of life" documentary. However, Flaherty presented the film to the public as "real images," which led to controversy.
When viewed as a collaborative project or a reconstructed narrative, "Nanook of the North" offers valuable insights into early 20th-century filmmaking and the Inuit's nostalgia for a rapidly disappearing way of life. Nevertheless, it is crucial to consider the film's colonial context, which was largely omitted in the "romanticizing of the Other" trend of the time.
It is important to note that the term "Eskimo" is considered offensive and should be avoided. The preferred term is "Inuit," which is how this ethnic group refers to themselves. "Inuk" refers to one person, while "Inuit" is used for three or more people.
102 year old and a terrific watch. Very tough life, trap, catch food or starve. Smiling laughing kids, clearly happy and playing the same snow games as we did. I hope many people view and appreciate this film.
thank you for this classic film
Beautiful , I was in the Ungava in 1955 with my parents, still had dog sleigh, my dad was a hydrological ingenner maping out rivers.

This is the real deal. No pretends in this movie, what you see is what you get. They worked and pulled together as a team or they wouldn’t survive. Modern man wouldn’t survive the harsh conditions that they prospered through. Thanks for the amazing video!
Excellent film for the time , yet it still tops out in 2025. Thanks very much.
Just watched the beginning to see Nanook empty his kayak had to stop I’m saving this where I can really watch it without interruption 😀
Bet Nanook's descendants could use some of the royalties due him from Klondie ice cream bars and other uses of his likeness. Yea, happy go lucky. Didn't know he was 'giving' a commodity away; apparently no one to give him better advice.

When I was 9 years old in the Oregon wilderness two miles from no where I came around a corner in the trail and found myself standing toe to toe with a black bear. Some day I'll have to write a story about it but now at 73 years old that story may never get written.
Just share the experience it will be nice to hear from you a real trill story first hand !
