i had SO many squinkies and their playsets. the hello kitty and disney princess ones were my favorites,, but i eventually decided to give my whole collection to my little cousins. i will never forget the horror of finding cinderella’s decapitated head in the carpet at their house.

24 yo also autistic! Most of those were more my little sister's than mine but I literally still dream about Moshi Monsters sometimes. I played an ungodly amount of MM in the early 2010s.
I LOVED Squinkies and Zhu Zhus but I had "you're twelve we're not buying you kids' toys" parents. I used to steal my siblings' to play with. The all-brown gen 1 Zhu Zhu was my absolutely favorite.

I had the original game and loooved it. +I loved giving my Squinkie-Doo’s baths in the bathroom sink.
Me too! I thought no one remembered them cuz every time I bring them up, no one knows what I’m talking about. I had so many of them, I had the play sets, I had a puzzle, I even had the mini version of squinkies, zinkies. :3
when I was in 1st grade, they would give kids fake money for being good and squinkies were always one of the things you could buy with the fake money

There was a HUGE successful vending machine toy line called Lil Homies back in the late 90s. Completely changed the game. I remember hunting down machines that carried them and just cleaning them out. Feel like they were one of the first in the mini craze.

This is not that related to the video but it feels so cool to see someone around my age (I’m 17 but you know not super far off) creating videos like this successfully, especially someone who’s also autistic and a lesbian who talks about so many things that are nostalgic for me. It’s like this channel was made exactly for me haha!!

I actually really loved the army set. It came with the usual tweezers but were "military themed", had a rollback car that could fit a couple zinkies, and the magnifying glass was cool too. And, they could be put away easily in the grenade. I also liked the variation and the amount of figures they had. I remember there were a few that were silver or black, some where snipers and some had two big bazookas. I played with those for hours. I would set them all up on my couch and make them go to war, and play with them like little dolls, too. I think these figures were really nice. They gave me an outlet to do more "girly" things that I otherwise wouldn't have gotten to do. They were soft and squishy and had faces, despite them seeming like a stereotypical "boys toy" in all other regards. I was never really allowed to have too many stuffed animals, but I could play around with these little guys in my bed before I went to sleep and make up stories about them.

I regret getting rid of my squinkies every day. Especially my totodile one, which I’m sure was off brand since i can’t find ANYTHING about any Pokémon squikies anywhere but i swear it wasn’t just a crocodile squinkie it was 100% a totodile, miss my silly guys
You single handedly ended my toy ID torture. I had these teeny tiny hair pieces that were mixed in with Giftems that I could NOT identify. I got so frustrated I put them away for two weeks. I had (and still have the hello kitty squinkies) so many squinkies they were so cute (and looked super chewy lol). I LOVED the ds games specifically the one where they’d chaotically jump on different platforms. And then the one where they’d collect coins outside to get new squinkies. Ugh so iconic
Only memory I have of these is playing with them at a friend's house when I was like 7. Basically she was having her birthday party and apparently I was the only one to show up, she was very happy I was there, I gave her her gift and we played squinkies for like 5 minutes before I had to leave. I haven't talked to her in like years since then so I really hope she's doing okay now.

I LOVED squinkiez. I had the gum ball machine thing. I loved keeping them in the capsules. I’ve always been obsessed with really cute tiny things and that is definitely why squishies and squinkiez captured me when I was a kid.

I cant believe this wasnt mentioned, squinkies had a online game like webkins, the squinkies came with a code in the capsules that you could get play the character in game.
It wasnt very popular when I played in 2012-2014 but you could decorate your house and play mini games, and walk around squishland.

I remember one of the commercials showing a squinkies capsule between each finger on someone's hand and that inspired me to use them to learn how to do the star trek thing

I had these as a kid. But in my memory I keep getting them mixes up with Shopkins for some reason. I only had the Cupcake pocky machine set and only collected them for like a couple months. I used these as toys for my Littlest Pet Shop when I made a store set/ children bedroom set/ had the LPS playing with them like toys.

I was obessed with these in the 3rd grade, and I remember loosing my first squinkie. I was devastated.
I have a group of Squinkies in a birdhouse, filled with Sanrio ones, mostly Hello kitty and her family, and friends.
These were one of my favorites as a kid!
I don't know if they're related, but they remind me of those small Winnie the Pooh cellphone charms/keychain accessories from the 2010. They had squishy costumes you could put on them and you'd collect them from surprise ball machines in malls (or sometimes blind bags at the dollar store)
I only remember seeing Winnie and friends as characters, but maybe there were more? It was super popular at my middle school and the costumes were highly chewable

To elaborate on the mention of the coin-op capsule toy machines being popular in Japan:
Japan is actually where those originate! They're called "gachapon" or "gashapon" (both are correct) over there, with "gacha/gasha" representing the sound the crank makes as you turn it and "pon" being the sound of the capsule coming out. (This is also where the term "gacha", as in "gacha game", originates)
They were invented in the '60s by a man named Ryuzo Shigeta--he was inspired by an American machine he saw that released candy and toys, but he found the mechanism kind of haphazard and came up with the idea of putting the toys in capsules to streamline it.
Additionally the Pokeball comparison isn't as far off as you think--the earliest ideas for the Pokemon games took heavy inspiration from gachapon, and the original name was planned to be "Capumon" (short for Capsule Monsters) rather than "Pokemon" (short for Pocket Monsters)
If I remember correctly this was changed for copyright reasons? but it's worth noting that in the first few games the Pokeballs looked and seemingly functioned a lot like gacha capsules with them coming apart into two pieces, though since then they've been portrayed as one unit with a hinge and featuring a button

As a kid I wanted the princess ones so bad but we could never find them anywhere near us. They were sold out everywhere including Toys R Us and Walmart.
I got my very first Squinkie as a prize for winning bingo in elementary school. My teacher got mad at me for playing with it during class so she took it from me and never gave it back :( I will never forget that day
36:24 you are right! It doesn’t really sound like a pokeball BUT pokeballs are based off the Capsule balls in Gatcha Machines. That same inspiration for Squinkies so you got that right!
iirc pokeballs are based on the gachupon capsule balls so its definitely an apt description! all the toy deep dives you do unlock core memories for me, i totally forgot about squinkies until i saw this video pop up 😅
