Languages are not popular or unpopular based on what you like or dislike. It is based on what is most spoken. In this context the children were not insulting Hindi. They cheered for Tamil because obviously they are in Tamil Nadu and majority speak Tamil.
If a minister from TN goes to a UP school and say, English, Hindi or Tamil, then obviously the children will cheer for Hindi and be silent for Tamil. Does that mean the UP children hate Tamil? Of course not.

There is no comparison of Hindi and Tamil. Hindi is not a regional language, there is no village which can claim that hindi is their language.
Every region has their separate language and their separate mother tongue, and all learn Hindi to communicate to each other.
And Sanskrit is the common thread in most Indian language.
Its not a national language yes but it should be, and Hindi does not stop someone to create poems in their mother tongue, to converse in their mother tongue, to read write books in their mother tongue.
English by the way does that, because of the coloniality.

If Sanskrit is thousands of years older than English, French, Spanish, Germanic as well as Greek and Roman, then you all go to those countries and try to teach them your language, if they allow you to do so. I now am beginning to think that having the concept of an "official" language abe was probably a mistake, as was granting recognition to 10 or 22'or 15:other languages with that status of being "official". I am now really beginning to think if language of convenience would not have been a better concept, and leave the languages to the people and society at large.

Generally speaking, languages are for communication. People learn it based on the utility and the vastness of it. If a language connects you with either huge number of people or influential people, it is good to learn it. If you make it an issue of prestige, then you will be the one suffering because you would not be able to expand your network. People should be willing to learn as many languages as possible, specially the ones which are highly influential or spoken among large masses.

Hindi is spoken among the largest number of people in India, who play a major role in deciding the political fate of the nation. I agree with your point that Hindi currently seems away from culture, which is why Hindi needs Sanskritization.
Hindi is not spoken only in "Hindi belt" but also heavily used in Non-Hindi states like Gujarat and Maharashtra. Even in parts of Karnataka, Telangana, West Bengal, Odisha, etc., people can communicate in Hindi. Almost, 60% of the Bharatiya population can speak or/and understand Hindi as, at least, their 3rd language.
P.S.- When I am talking about the importance of Hindi, it does not, at all, mean that we should should not be proud of other Indian languages, and ignore them. We should celebrate the glory of all Bharatiya languages as a part our shared heritage as Bharatiyas.

Anyway, no one is forcing you to learn anything. I have just pointed out the signficance of Hindi because you asked the question. Northeners do not speak in Hindi with southerners anyway, they use English for striking neutrality.
Having said it, I do agree with you on respecting local languages and eventually Sanskrit being the national language. My suggestion is only for the time being.

Since you talked about Navodaya Vidyalay and KVs, I know a person named N Gineesh K from TN, who was posted in jharkhand, during a discussion on Hindi Diwas, when someone told that since Hindi as a language is spoken by more number of people, should be the national language, so the fellow named Giineesh, suddenly says that since crows as a bird are found everywhere, so it should be the national Bird of India. What I want to say is that it's also some people in TN hate Hindi to the extent that even if they know the language, they would not speak it. I have come across people from Kerala, AP, Karnataka but no one from there would say it openly that they hate Hindi. And surprisingly that fellow Gineesh k for at least 12 to 13 yrs, had served in the NE region and than in the place where i met him, during his service period.

Nobody has the right to stop a person from learning a new language of his/her choice. Opportunities should be given for learning new languages. Also, nobody should be forced to learn a language which he/she does not want to.
A language will survive only if its spoken and written by people. A language should be in daily use for its existence. We should take steps so that none of our Indian languages become extinct.

If at all there is one language that can integrate the whole nation and even the entire Indian subcontinent, that is Sanskrit. Sanskrit can even integrate Germans, Arminian, Latvian, Azerbaijani, English, Spanish, Italian, Australian tribal languages, Newziland tribal languages, African tribal languages, Argentinian tribal languages, French, Malai, Nepali, Myanmar, Korea, Cambodia, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Iran… you name a language, there is Sanskrit in it.

South or Tamil Nadu does not mean dmk or admk. Respect languages and tamilians respect their mother tongue in addition to other languages. A mother does not discriminate their children.

Similarly French was not spoken in France by all but made national language and people speak it. English is internationally spoken but eould you expect USA/UK etc people w🎉ho work anywhere in the world to learn language of that country? Btw I see Indians from South who donot speak English, talk to each other in Hindi very comfortably here in Mumbai.

Inventor saheb, FYI: In TN schools, students have an option to learn Hindi or Tamil as a second language. So, those who need to learn, they learn. No one is stopping that. Dont peddle non sense by saying otherwise and selectively leaving what the BJP is doing. What is the need to rename everything in Hindi? In the same video, you can see majority speak Tamil and English. Why they need to speak Hindi? Now, lets talk other things. Tamil culture goes back 3000 years. Tamil literature, Language goes back thousands of years. It is older than Sanskrit. In other words, we know roughly how old Sanskrit is. But no one can say how old Tamil is. It goes beyond Sanskrit. So, dont peddle non sense. Tamil people are smarter than what you think.. because of the history. They understood English is important to communicate with the world and they have Tamil in their heart and minds. There is no place for HINDI. But you will keep trying. We know that. Anyway, Ashwin is an outlier. He is speaking clearly using the right words keeping the context in mind.

Mr Iyer seems to think that in schools the primary objective is to learn as many languages as possible and does not care about other subjects. Children has limited time in school and their time is precious. Learning a language that does not help them in mastering important subjects has no value especially if they can`not use it in any meaningful way. I have learnt many languages but could never master them when I am not in a place where that language is not spoken. It is more important that the children in school learn subjects like Mathematics, science, history, geography, literature etc in depth. What is the use of learning Hindi in any of these fields? Sure Mr Iyer has learnt Hindi since he lives in an area where Hindi or Urdu is spoken. For children in Tamil Nadu it is enough to learn Tamil and English along with subjects like science which will help them in their life. No sense in learning a language like Hindi which does not benefit them in improving their understanding of these subjects. With English they can acquire knowledge of subjects that they are not able to get in Tamil. So Mr Iyer should stop making pleas for people to learn Hindi in school. If the necessity arises people will learn any language that they need once they learn two languages well. Additional languages are only necessary if they have some usefulness for adults. Mr Iyer seems to advocate Hindi in TN while he never ever asks the people in the Hindi areas to learn additional Indian languages.

No one is forcing anyone to speak only Hindi, whoever wants to speak can speak the language, you have to speak to the person in front of you in a language which he can understand, otherwise you should remain silent, but the truth is that people are using the language for their political interests. Maintain controversy, this is the beauty of democracy? Those who hate Hindi and Hindi-speaking people also argue that Hindi has swallowed the regional languages and dialects of North India. Such so-called intellectuals are forced to move out of the metro-centric film world of Bollywood and into small towns and villages. One should go and see that people converse only in their regional languages and dialects. As for Ashwin, factually he has not said anything wrong, it is a fact that he has said it.

I seen peoples argument learning other indian language will kill their own language. For this people English leaning gives great pride. I am Indian from South can speak all South Indian languages. I am very good in Hindi as well. I can go any part of India and dont need google translator. Those speaking against the hindi are still inside the shell and need to come out to explore the benifits of learning more and more languages. Anti Hindi speaking will not make us nationalist.

The fact that this issue hasn’t gained much attention in Tamil media suggests that only those aligned with the RSS-BJP ideology are concerned about it. While learning multiple languages is valuable, how many languages are actually embraced in North India? If you are batting for learning multiple language, Is it acceptable to sideline Sanskrit or Hindi and instead learn global languages like Spanish or Chinese?
All the additional justifications for promoting specific languages ultimately point to pushing a Vedic-Sanskrit ideology. This approach lacks honesty and genuine concern for the well-being of all. communities.

Anything National like bird, animal, flower etc are supposed to be the Best in India. In that analogy a language that is called Nationa language should have rich literature and Grammer. The Majority does not decide this. The whole Hindi Grammer can be written in a post card. Being easy to learn it can only be official language. The National language should have deep history and rich literary values like Sanskrit Tamil etc.
