Good discussion G. Over the years I've played with a lot of these systems, but you introduced me to some new ones. My fellow players and I seem to always drift back to the simpler systems to keep the game moving (though I've played with some groups that use very complex dice and combat mechanics that take quite a bit of time to resolve a battle- and had a good time).

Initially complex games can be good, but they tend to be the games where people grow tired of the complexity. Overly complicated mechanics are usually indicative of more simulation style games, however the more realistically you try to model something the more yo slow everything down. Sometimes you just want to lay the smack down and move on.

So many dice systems. What makes the game less fun is when the dice rolling gets too complicated.

That's why in 7DSystem you out ever need a single 1

I'm years late, but outro made me hit like /thumbs up, I've been pondering how to use exploding dice myself after learning it for roll expressions in a VTT.

    Nice summary!
I know of another kinda weird but interesting system (Godlike) where you have to roll a pool of d10s and want to have pairs. The more dice with the same number on it the faster the action. The higher the result on the dice, the more potent/precise it is. You can only choose 1 set though so if you have 3x2 and 2x8 you have to choose whether you prefer faster but lower or higher but slower.

Pairing also exists in Tunnels and Trolls I think

It's not a comment section it is an "argument" section. For the sake of argument, huzzah.

Several errors, but I'll only cover one of those.
The 'cancel system' would would prefectly describe pretty much everything White Wolf has ever produced since any die that comes up a 1 completely negates a success, and if you go into negatives, you fumble/crit fail. A side effect of that is if you have any difficulty higher than 10 (since they use d10) then the more skilled you are, the more likely you will not only fail, but crit fail, and far worse than a low skill person. (Somebody only rolling 1d10 can only get one crit fail, while someone with 5d10 can get a crit fail of up to 5.)
Tunnels and Trolls does NOT use a cancel system, it uses two different systems:
Almost everything other than straight combat is done using Saving Rolls. You roll 2d6 trying to get a target number that has been adjusted by your relevant attribute. It doesn't matter if it's swinging on a chandelier and going out the window, or picking a pocket, or trying to not succumb to the sleeping poison you just inhaled, it's a Saving Roll.
Saving Rolls are affected by Daro, which is Doubles Roll Over. Basically, if you roll doubles, reroll and add until you no longer get doubles. Many games have fumbles, crit fails, automatic fails, etc when you roll the minimum the dice can roll, but since T&T uses Daro, that doesn't really work too well, so it's the automatic failure if you roll a 3. (That's always natural 1 & 2, so it doesn't apply to a Daro as that's a type of exploding dice mechanism triggered by doubles.)
For combat you roll a dice pool and compare your result against opponents. The lower total takes the difference in damage. Now that's as close as T&T come to what you call a cancel system, but it doesn't matter what any die rolls, just the compared values of the totals which are each sides total rolls of combat dice (no exploding or cancelling at all) and each sides Personal Combat Adds. (I'm not sure what you'd consider that, but it seems like a variable target system to me, with the target being the opponents combat total. Similar to what many games use as a mechanism for opposed rolls.)
Sorry my text isn't the greatest wording.
There are some other things you mentioned I could probably debate, but I'll just leave it to the T&T one, as that's the only example you used that seemed to be WAY off the mark. Things can get a bit fuzzy around the edges, but task resolution in T&T isn't cancelling at all, though it is exploding.

I had only read the rulebook, I hadn't played the game so it was a year or more a go, so you are most likely right on the money. Still even though the example is wrong, the type of system does exist.

Also, as I said, a lot of systems use combinations of these for different things. So it does get fuzzy as you say

I'm playing one deck dungeon lately and the strange part about it it's the fact I like it despite the fact I'm rollin only d6s and using female characters.
