  • Well, here we all are then, in lock down with not much to do. This new series gives us a few jobs to do that take a bit of time and will take our mind off the world problems just for an hour or so.
    This episode takes on problems with the rear lights on the BMW E31 - a well know problem with the wiring that goes to the trunk/boot lid which eventually fatigues and breaks. I will sow you the complete routine from removing the wiring sheath to re-covering it after a successful repair.
    I will also show you an emergency repair you can do to get your lights working again quickly - something I had to do to get it through the MOT a while ago - takes a few minutes and gets all the important lights going again.

    Good to see you’re doing well, Timm! My state here in the US is under a stay at home order meaning we can only really leave home if you are a medical professional/necessary personnel or you’re getting groceries. It’s given me a ton of time to work on my car, though! I’ve gotten more done on my E38 740iL this week than any other time in the last few months! Can’t wait for more of this series.

    Timm..soldering and as you said..needing 3 hands..there is an item on the market of an all complete solder/heatshrink piece.
    In various gauges to suit most wires...and simply cut your two new ends..expose your fresh clean wires..slide a all complete piece of tube on one end....gently push the wires into each other and slide the sheath over the joint...aligning the inbuilt solder over the centre of the exposed wires ....and heat the heat gun...solder melts in exact area...heatshrink obviously does it's natural act..and inbuilt at each end of the heatshrink is a substance that forms a water tight seal...might be a better long term solution and less fiddling in the exposed environment ie the solder torch struggling to keep temp. Your the expert but just hopefully expanding your knowledge.

    Good video, i had to do this wiring loom repair to my E39 as the boot latch release wire was coming into contact with the number plates light power wire and causing the boot lid to open while driving. I also recommend using the Carly app/obdadapter to turn off number plate light bulb monitoring in the light control module as this while stop the bulb failure warning which comes when using LED. It lets you pick and choose which bulbs to monitor, so if you still have any incandescent bulbs left you can keep the monitoring feature. Hope this helps. 👍

      Thanks! Unfortunately the E31 is of an age where lights could not be programmed out - although it is probably easy just to modify the LKM physically, I like a challenge!

    This was a great video. I know I'm late but had a question: would this issue cause my truck light to flash while also releasing the trunk lock? It kept going until I disconnected the battery. Thanks for your insight.

    • @TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
      @TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation  Год назад +1

      Yes, it can cause that - but make sure that your batteries are in good condition as that can cause the same problem. With the boot (trunk) open the lights should stay on for 16 minutes - and then go off

      @@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation Thanks. I had them on a charger / maintainer and it showed healthy when the problem started. I will look at the batteries close. Thanks again.

    Hello Tim. I have never heard of self-amalgamating tape. Looks like plain old electrical tape to me. Oh, I forgot you're on the other side of the pond. Lol
    I also have never seen anyone stretch it before applying it. That looks like a good idea. Probably makes it stick to itself and stay on better. Are you close to London or other large city? Does it look like a ghost town?
    How is Boris doing? We hear he is in quarantine because of his exposure. Take care and stay healthy.

      @TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation  4 года назад

      No, it's not electrical tape - this is a tape often used in plumbing as it amalgamates (in melts together) and forms a permanent waterproof repair - it cannot be unwound again, ever!

      @@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation OH, I stand corrected. You're a bloody genius! I have never heard of this tape and yes electrical tape does not hold for long. I'm glad you told me I shall try to find some for future use. Thanks Timm and keep busy so not to get bored. Ken of 'Mercedessource' suggested we go out and polish the chrome on our cars. Not bloody likely! Lol

    Hi Timm, hope all is well with you :)
    This series sounds like a great idea, I'm at a loss of what to do with the car apart from admire her from a distance and wait for this all to blow over.
    I don't suppose you have any suggestions about where to get rear tyres for the 8? I have the same model as you, I think, 840ci 4.4l 1997. I'm struggling to find rear tyres for her, downsizing to 255 seems to be an option but not sure if it's the right one...

    Does anyone know why this happens? Is it because it rubs?
