The Waorani (or Huaorani) people are one of the last hunter gather tribes in the world. First contacted by the rest of humanity only 50 years ago, there are currently less than 5,000 of them and many still live deep in the Amazon jungle of eastern Ecuador subsisting off wild monkeys and peccaries that they hunt themselves. Visiting their village, which is accessible via a dangerous 12 hour boat ride through the jungle, was perhaps the single craziest experience of my life. I brought along my RUclipsr friend ‪@Davidsbeenhere‬, his cameraman Nate, and my friend and cameraman ‪@SeaboltSpeaks‬. Thanks to Wareka (@amazonwaoraniexpeditions on IG) for inviting us into his community and organizing our trip!

Two months ago I was digging through ancestry records and saw a flagrant misspelling on an ancestor's name. It lead me down a rabbit hole to discovering that my ancestors were guaraní, not Italian, as previously thought. To see my grandfather and my mother's face on these people moves me to tears. Their playful nature reminds me of my grandfather playing with my cousins and I. He never knew of his heritage, but I can see his smile in the face of their leader.

@@raggahiphop46 Not necessarily. That's the thing about spreading information, is that it can kind of perpetuate itself. You're right that it likely won't amount to anything, but it's also possible that it will really strike a chord with some people, and those people will go on to spread awareness, and some of those people will then spread awareness, etc. And maybe then it will affect someone who later ends up in a position of power, and can actually make a difference. The point is, spreading information is never pointless. It's nearly impossible to track just how much it might ultimately set into motion. Sometimes it's nothing, sometimes it's only a little bit, and sometimes it's a lot.

People use oil just to get to their jobs and the buildings those people work in were built with machines using oil. Literally everything uses oil in some way.
While there are ways we could protest and have the oil extraction be done without the drills being directly over the oil source, it would take years to fix. Even after years of protesting, there is a good chance that nothing would change.
There is already so much to protest in every country. I sit here in the US and my protest would never reach the Ecuadorian government. I could protest the use of oil, but that won't get me anywhere. Just today I seen a video of protesters in the UK having their banners ripped down. The comment section was cheering the man ripping them down. I think every sensible person understands the protesters feelings but we all know that everything we do requires oil.
As a 20 year old, sitting in my leaking house, trying to make ends meet, trying to get my life together, what can I do? Protest with the little time I have? In my small town? Donate what little money I have for myself? Haha I do donate money whenever I can actually. Unfortunately I cannot help everyone.

@@countercuIture I admire your perspective, especially for being 20 years old. You are intelligent and clearly a critical thinker. I am as well. You are exactly right, oil is imbedded within our infrastructure of society in so many ways it would be foolish to think we could completely get rid of it. I don’t think that’s a good idea, nor do I believe we need to stop using it. It would be nice if we would drill for oil in the massive reserves we have within our own country and stop impeding on other peoples land, culture and way of life. But I am a dreamer, and I will be honest, I have become jaded to society. Not to the people who are a part of it so much, but the people in the shadows who are on top. I laugh when uncomfortable, nervous, excited, literally any time. It's just how my body reacts to intense feelings. Ik thus didn't have to do with neurodivergency, but it's nice to keep in mind that not all people see the world the same, nor behave the same and people shouldn't be invalidated for not acting the way society expects them to! 😋

The Waorani (formerly known as the Auca tribe) were famous in the US a generation ago because five American missionaries were speared to death when they tried to make friendly contact with them. One of the widows, Elisabeth Elliot (the lady pictured in the photo), took her 2 year old daughter and went to live among the tribe, offering free medical care and forming deep friendships with the individuals who had killed her husband and his friends. You can read the famous story about the missionaries and the Waorani in books Elizabeth Elliot wrote and movies made about that moment in history (“The End of the Spear”).

The people of the tribe, at that time, were violent and used a powerful drug before battle. Because of Elizabeth Elliot and others they gave up the violence . I’m not doing the story justice. I heard it from an interview with a tribe member who had been part of the killing and was also part of the transformation. He completely rejected violence afterwards. He came to the US at one point and I remember him being astounded by drive through because the thought of people just handing you food through a window was amazing to him. Ecuadorian here, I want to give a little more context about the situation between the Taramenane and Huaoranis. These people have been in conflict for years if not decades, the have killed each others multiple times. In one attack the Huaoranis massacred some of the Taromenane and took their spears as a trophy. So, yeah, they are basically two people at war. I haven’t heard about the topic in a long time so my information might be a little incomplete, thus I invite you all to do some research about this tribes, as it can be really fascinating. I tell this because someone watching the video would think the Taromenane are the “bad guys” when in reality it is a long conflict with many moving parts and casualties in both tribes.
