- Track number 5 on Flyleaf's album Memento Mori. I had this video finished yesterday but I forgot to upload it. I suppose it didn't help I deleted the wmv file for it accidentaly so I had to go back and re-save it. Oh well. Only 4 more songs to go :D

I think this song is about the spiritual battle over our souls and within ourselves. The person in the song was given a glimpse into what it feels to look at themselves from a death point of view (looking in your window...dressing in your clothes) and how they could have lived a better life. Once they realize they have been living a lie there is a compelling feeling to change.

I love that their songs are like this, open for interpretation, As an atheist it has a different meaning to me, but it's still pretty powerful. =)
This song is a metaphor for those who live in spiritual death and have just become aware that they can be truly alive.
I am a complete atheist, I've never believed in God or spirituality. But even knowing the "true" inspiration for a lot of Flyleaf songs I still relate to them heavily for my own reasons. I don't think you need to believe in God to understand the messages, a lot of the time people find these meanings through God and their religion but even though I don't believe, I still feel impacted by the lyrics. Maybe it's not exactly the same, but it still helps me and that's what I think is incredible about music as a medium. People that don't see eye to eye can still be affected positively by the same messages.
Reminds me of a relationship that starts out amazing. You feel happy, inspired and like the world is your oyster. You're both rushing ahead trying to make each day more beautiful than the last but suddenly, one of you falls into regular habits, into a rut, just existing, always placing their interest in trivial, futile pursuits, you try to live like them for a bit just to stay with them but realise that their lifestyle makes you dead inside and you realise that life wants to lead you to big and wonderful things...... but they won't come with you.
This is actually my favorite song by Flyleaf :)

she makes it so perfect this song really makes you feel "this close" you can how the person in the song has seen god from a distance but not really had the full experience..
and if you think about it the rest of the album has a similar theme..

She is right, but not in the way you think. It's the sudden awareness of the person who has lived without knowing God, living thinking everything they've known is all that there is...but always sensing somewhere inside that that's not right, this isn't all there is...and suddenly coming face to face with the reality of God.
This is just the most emotionally impactful song I’ve ever heard when paying attention to the lyrics.
i love Lacey Moseley, her voice in all her songs sounds like her soul is crying out, it's so strange and beautiful. wonderful song though, i've felt this way so many times, i can relate to all her songs, God bless this amazing band and L. M

I'm sick of going on every single flyleaf song ever and seeing people talk about religion and what the songs are about. Stop worrying about it first of all, flyleaf is a christian rock band but they don't care if their fans are an atheist, christian, catholic, Jewish, Muslim, or whatever. They care about their fans and don't give a crap. Musicians put out music so that people can listen to them, not so everybody could make such a big deal out of it. I'm 13 and i already know that's this world is messed up. But people shouldn't have to worry about this silly stuff and just come together. Everyone has their own point of view and I get that just here me out, just appreciate the music and live life. They put this out there so people could listen and fall in love with the song, not so people can try to get people to change their religion, that's their choice not yours.

In truth humanity is made of a bunch of opinionated haters and those who come by these things only to give rise to debate and conflict. I didn’t know this is Christianity based song. At face value it seemed to be a song about someone who hasn’t been living as themself, someone who has been living in what seems to be everyone else’s reality while not engaging in it themself. Rather, they’ve been playing along.
Regardless of the artist’s meaning, songs can take on different meanings. And that’s what it makes me think and feel about.
That's exactly how I looked at the song. "I don't know who I am anymore-Not once in life have I been real, but I never felt this close before" Shes been faking who she is because she wants to fit in. "I've been looking through your window-I've been dressing in your clothes" Shes observing how these different people act and dress so she can be accepted not as herself, but her persona. "I've been watching you-Watching dead; Long enough to know I cant go on" She cant pretend anymore or she'll snap.
I feel absolutely every song from this album. Listening to it now, i realize what God was doing through these wonderful, talented people. So sad i didnt get to see them perform before Lacey left. =(

For the first time, I realize this song's true meaning. It's about a person living without hope, coming to the realization of God, realizing that they can no longer live the meaningless life of their peers. This is awesome! Praise God!

I just want to through out what I think of the song. :) I think the band was conveying the message of lost love, and that one person was never alive, and always just ran through the motions of life. So the person that died had to feel the pain of not actually being able to love, but still falling for something they couldn't have. But in the end the dead one fell apart but left the living person to feel the same pain.

+Zion and the World A Song never has only one meaning, at least if it's a good song.
It's about people who know about God, but never truly cared about or accepted Him. The person described in the song seems to have lost themselves and finally realized that God is their only hope. The part that says "Someone warned me of this hell, and I spit in his naive eye, and left him crying for my soul he said would die" seems to refer to how Christians warn and tell others about God's love, but yet non-Christians just laugh or scoff at them. In Romans 8:13 it says; "For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live."
The guy who warns her is scoffed at, so he feels compassion for her because he knows if she continues to live for her flesh, she WILL die.
I love this song so much the lyrics discribe how I feel completly.. I could listen to this all day..
I love this song for its beauty, and how this question popped into my mind: to end up confused by the need to separate a person into the private and secular, or the multiple "identities" one employs to fit in with different groups. To put on the clothes of someone else and pretend that it's ok to be someone else at different times, makes a person as if "dead", not knowing what to live for.

this song is about how as sinners... we are all dead. and when we come to God we become real. All laceys songs are about God and faith. everysingle one of them. lacey has brought me back into being a christian and by her songs...she has saved my life
I think it's a cry of help to God, how not every one can always find him even if they try, and how it's in every one no matter how hard it is to find.

@Charms522 if you think about just the song title in general, you can tell its go on, compared to go wrong, because they have two completely different meanings. One meaning it succeded the other meaning she got "This close", but she couldn't go further.

I think the song is about a person pretending to be a good Christian. She is suffering from depression and feels dead inside, but that person has never been this close to feeling real. It may also be that the person was saved because she was this close to killing herself.
