How To Make Faux African Pottery Beads With Polymer Clay

These are a fun easy project to create with polymer clay. I've done a bracelet, but they'd look adorable as earrings. A necklace would also be a stunning chose. Play around with different colors and let me know how it goes if you chose to create this.

I enjoyed this tutorial so much. I find it very helpful when using just polymer clay-no silk screens, paint, glitter etc because I get a better idea of how versatile polymerclay can be just on its own.

Yes! Also if you you sand them with varying grits then buff…I believe you’ll have a very nice shine as well…esp when the colors are mixed with the translucent clays! The translucent clays really shine through almost looking like lampwork glass!

Ah yes, the art of making a hole without distorting the bead. Glad I’m not the only one who sometimes struggles with that.

Very nice and very effective looking beads, thank you for sharing. Can I ask please how you separated the beads between coats of varnish without marking them?

I suspend them on a wire that has nicks in it to separate the beads. That way I can dip them without them falling back together.

Is there a reason why they needed to be drilled while they’re soft? I have more success with a bead drill going through the beads after baking.

I chose to drill them soft because it was easier on my hands that day. There were a number of beads and would have taken quite some time to drill once baked.
I usually drill after baking as I do prefer the results.

I used water based varathane gloss varnish. Sorry, I didn't realize I didn't mention that in the video.
